Not a doctor, im actually doing physics, so im not qualified to answer, but as far as i know if you have healthy cortisol levels and you bump them up it basically boosts your immune system temporarily (?) and allows you to fend off infections for a while, but if you over do it, it xan actually overuse your immune system and leave it vulnerable. Again, not sure about any of this, consult a professional. Ginger, honey and garlic are super effective though. In the Balkans the old timers also get themselves some rakjia (ракия) which they claim to do wonders hah.

As far as I know, cortisol inhibits immune system function which reduces its inflammatory response (in the short term), actually making you more vulnerable to infection due to the delayed response time.

Interesting. My immediate logic says that you might not get sick simply because when you are not eating you are minimisin the risk of consuming the virus, especially from kids, who when sick will touch _everything_ with dirty hands. Another head logic tells me that your immune system gets a boost, since you are not forcing your body to "waste" time and energy on digesting the food you consume and thus can put that energy into the bodies other functions (like immune system). How many days did you usually fast in a row? Like eat "normally" 2-3 days then fast 2-3 days and repeat?

Yeah, that was actually a pretty common report back when fasting first made its comeback. There are plenty of pretty solid mechanistic speculations for why that would be the case. I think the most valid one is that, the immune system is actually very responsive to eating, because it has to be in case there are potential pathogens in the food. If you are in a situation where you are being exposed to the flu, and/or cold it turns into a situation of the immune system fighting on two fronts. Thats the short version anyway, its actually a pretty complex situation.
@charlierutherford359525 күн бұрын
The immune system is always fighting on a ton of fronts you dont wear it out by any normal means. If anything, the cold symptoms are almost always caused by your immune system not by the cold itself (hence why people with autoimmune deficiencies like IgE deficiency are usually asymptomatic from infections)
@leinekenugelvondoofenfocke100225 күн бұрын
@charlierutherford3595 Either that or your immune system kept it in check without having to escalate things to the point where you were symptomatic. That's the preferred situation.

Makes sense to me because your body can focus its energy on fighting the virus instead of digesting food. Might not work as well for people that have crappy diets and already have nutrient deficiencies.
@dessertstorm747624 күн бұрын
that just words bro. Thats like saying "I can run a marathon faster because im not using energy digesting food." I mean you can make anything make sense if you use that massively simplified logic that takes no details into account. How much energy does it actually take to digest food? Probably less than taking a walk. But sitting motionless doesn't help fight a cold does it? Does your body actually need to "focus" on fighting a cold and divert more resources to it? You can do a whole workout with a cold and it wont slow down your recovery in my experience, so I think the partitioning of energy resources is not the factor here. TLDR You can't just make a conclude somethign makes sense based on about 2 seconds of thought

I have at least one personal anecdote that supports your hypothesis, so in a scientific sense I think we're golden, case closed. seriously though, in my anecdote the fasting goes hand in hand with basically doing nothing, no energy expended, no stress, no leaving the house even. so if you have a normal job and you happen to start catching a cold during the work week this approach wouldn't work the way it did for me. I wonder how you managed your usual lifestyle while on a complete fast. family life + working out + some kind of job probably, all on zero calories?

Is there any evidence to "starve a fever feed a cold"? I have literally never heard that in the last 3 years of medical school. I cannot even think of any physiological underpinnings that would make sense with that. Like a fever and a cold are not diseases they are syndromes? Would that mean you eat if you have just cold symptoms from the flu, but when you spike a fever, you make yourself stop eating even though the symptoms are caused by the same disease? The evidence based nutritional recommendations for almost any type of infectious disease are to hydrate aggressively and eat as tolerated. Nothing else has any level of high quality evidence.

there is alot of things we've been told and continue to parrot. Like, you not getting enough protein (says the overweight person). For what Living? Fasting provides the body time to sort out the issue. Think about it. Would you rather the body focus using energy for what you are putting in your stomach, or give it all to defeat the problem?

Add In Some nicotine my man. Pouches/patchs/gum whatever. Doesn’t matter. I feel like I’m almost invincible to colds. Normally if my kids are sick it’s a matter of time. Not anymore💪

nicotine suppresses appetite so this could just be a way for you to make fasting easier.
