The helmet bit reminds me of the point where the British Army introduced steel helmets in WWI. There were an increase in head wounds, leading to some insisting that they were ineffective. What it actually meant was an increase in SURVIVABLE head wounds... as opposed to soldiers being killed by shrapnel to the head.

There was a similar situation in WW2 except in the air force. They collated all the areas on returning bombers that received damage and suggested that these areas should have increased protection. Someone slightly smarter pointed out that all these aircraft had in fact survived and that they should up armour those areas not damaged as few, if any, aircraft that were damaged those areas had survived.

I wonder how “accidental” the whole thing was. The smoke would’ve accumulated in the guys house very quickly, which would’ve let him know that something was clogging his chimney. I kinda think he heard the guy up there and decided to give him a surprise, thinking he was just hiding up there and wasn’t actually stuck, or that maybe it was an animal crawling around in there. When he heard the guy start screaming, he probably figured out that the guy couldn’t get himself out, and that’s when he put the fire out. Obviously, I could be completely wrong, but it just sounds very convenient, and I have so many questions.

2 stories: 1. My key fob fell out of my pocket on a roller coaster at Hershey Park. I went to lost and found. Later, they called me to let me know that the woman who was beaned in the head by my fob had turned it in.😮 2. I was hit head-on by a car last year while riding my bicycle. I was thrown 8 feet through the air and landed upside down directly onto my head. At the hospital, they couldn't believe I suffered no head injury. My helmet was destroyed.

Cycle helmets are *great*. I'm so glad you wore one, and are able to share your experience. I started cycling at 17, back in the early 80s when almost no-one wore a helmet. When I moved to London at 18, my thankfully very persuasive sister took me out to buy one, and insisted I used it. I did, and a few years later, and honestly the *only* time I ever seriously thought about not using it (but did anyway), I had a missing-screw mudguard-stay-induced instant front wheel lockup while going around 30mph which ended up with me being flung right over the front, landing head-first in the road, sliding along for a surprisingly long time while watching my bike recede into the distance in a confusingly upside-down world, and finally rolling upright to end up sitting in the road still in cycling position trying to work out what just happened. I was sitting by the front wheels of a full-size passenger coach. The bike was by the back wheels. The helmet was surprisingly intact - just some deep gouges on the shell and presumably some compression of the foam liner, though back then, Kiwi cycle helmets weren't hugely different to minimalist half face motorcycle helmets - barely any ventilation holes, and a shell that was several millimeters thick. Apart from getting a couple of days of a ridiculously stiff neck and back starting the next day, the *only* other damage (apart from to the bike) was a small scuff on a rear trouser pocket that I had some keys in. Without the helmet, there's a meaningful chance I wouldn't even have made it to a hospital, and it certainly wouldn't have been a great experience if I had. As it was, I could just pick up the now somewhat shorter bike and jog back a couple of miles to where I'd started out from. If anyone who usually wears a helmet ever has a voice in their head suggesting that they don't wear one just this one time, please do what I did, and wear it anyway.

More recently here in the UK, Kevin Gough, alleged to be a serial burglar, attempted entry into a solicitors’ premises in Derby in early 2013, Staff at the firm reported a horrible odour and infestation of flies. A pest control company discovered the remains, which were believed to have been in the chimney for a number of weeks. We’d advise that you never ever try enter a chimney space unless you have specific training. That's the UK One. More common it seems in the US

The first one reminded me of similar incident here in my town (also in California). It was about roughly 15 years ago so can’t remember all details. One woman tried to get into her boyfriend house by going down through the chimney, died doing so. Unsure how long she was in there but smell of decay is what lead to her being discovered.

Back when I was a kid about 11 years old in 1976 I think, the little league baseball field that my brother and I played at and our dad was our team coach and he was vice president of the league. Every year the league would have a couple fund raisers and one was a carnival set up in the parking lot and it had a ferris wheel and spinning thing and other rides besides the midway games and there was the ride I'm sure a lot of people know called The Zipper. It had cages that spun around as they rotated around the outside of an long oval and my best friend and I were standing at the top of the bleachers for the baseball field looking over the back into and above the parking lot . The Zipper ride was right in front of us maybe 30 ft away. It was nighttime and the people got into the cages and then the operator started the ride. Everyone is aware that anything in your pockets is going to fly out. One of the riders had some change fall out of his pockets and you hear him say something, well at that point the guy operating the ride who was probably in his early or mid 20s, for some dumb reason decides to step over to pick up some of the change off the ground and he must have thought he could time it just right or he was just a fucking idiot but he bent over to pick up a quarter or something and when he stood up POW!!!! He gets hit in the forhead by the bottom of one of the cages. It popped his head like a watermelon dropped on a floor , it threw him back towards my friend and I about 15 ft which meant he waa about 15 ft from us but we were about 12 ft above the ground. We couldn't believe that we just saw that happen. Everyone is screaming people are rushing to help him but there was brains and scalp and a pool of blood on the ground. The ambulance showed up real fast becauae they were next door to the little league field. He was dead when he got hit they said. They took him away and the carnival was closed early and everyone left except a few of the men like my dad and his best friend. My friend and I had stayed and we watched as my dad used the big heavy duty garden hose to spray off all the blood and there were still pieces of brain and scalp floating in the bloody water. That was a Darwin Award winner for sure.

First story : we may never really know what happened, id suspect that when you have been trapped in a chimney for over 12 hours and then you literally see a guy making a manual old fashioned fire , you would definitely have time to alert them plus have time to weigh up staying there indefinitely being quiet , even if the smoke had not been lethal. Maybe just maybe our home owner just cooked him on purpose for about 30 minutes and then called police

When I was young I loved taking risks, but they were calculated risks. I signed up with the SCCA, got a racing license, and built and drove a Formula SuperVee race car. I loved speed so much I also took up downhill ski racing at the advanced amateur level. I was a rock climber as well, and did peak climbing in my state of Colorado. The difference was, I studied and took lessons for all these things. I used protection on rock climbs. I only raced on my skis in areas set aside for racing and during racing events. I raced my car at sanctioned events. Hence, I am still alive at 75, although there are times I look back and wonder how I made it. Oh, and I always used a helmet even though Colorado law did not mandate it. I gave up motorcycles after a few times people in cars did stupid things. I also always wear a seat belt; not a choice in racing and rightly so.

We all take risks, some of us more than others. But when I do something risky, I ask myself if I have taken every precaution possible. If something goes wrong, I don't want to say, "Well, I wish I could have been more careful." Bad things may still happen to us, but we shouldn't be asking for it!

@@sirridesalot6652 I'm sure more lives would be saved, but having raced in competition and used a 5 point harness, I can tell you they are a pain to use. Not hard to get out of, but a chore to get into. Given that so many people don't buckle up even though the laws says they must, I think it would be better to rigorously enforce the seat belt laws we have. Or make a tech solution that you cannot move the car until you have put on your seatbelt properly.

I think the reason many states have helmet laws is not out of concern for the bikers per se, but they calculated that the cost to society as a whole for numerous cases of brain damage was too high to tolerate. Seriously.

Recently 09 2024 Grand Canyon selfie gone wrong again! I've been there and went to the Glass walkway by the Havasupai Tribe, then the east entrance. My former boss and her hubby had a rear tire blowout riding double in Wyoming from Emmett Idaho. Both wearing helmets. He had a couple of broken bones and his wife died of her head and internal injuries.

My all-time favorite is the guy who mounted an Air Force booster rocket (used to help launch AF heavy aircraft) in the truck of his 60s something Chevy. He eventually got airborne and crashed into the side of a mountain. I found this dramatized in one of the early Darwin Awards videos.

I believe if you’re 18 in the US, you should be able to choose to wear a helmet on a motorcycle or a seat belt in a vehicle. However, if you’re in a crash and are hurt or killed, insurance shouldn’t have to cover you.

As an avid motorcyclist I've rode both with and without helmets over the course of 30 plus years. Nobody ever talks about the number of lifelong injuries riders sustain when they crash with a helmet. Sure, they might not die, but many live a very uncomfortable life for the remainder of their days. Most riders do not have strong neck muscles because they don't ride enough with the weight of a helmet or exercise. The helmet debate has no right or wrong solution. The reality is most cagers (automobile operators) are too d*mn ignorant to pay attention to their surroundings while operating a 4-5,000 lb killing machine. Alas, for me it's like this, until the LORD comes a callin ain't nothin gonna take me, and when He does come a callin ain't nothin gonna keep me. Rather elementary.
