Honestly, the tip of putting hair gel in the shower is something that really encouraged me to wear my hair curly. I’ve tried the plop method, the silicon and sulfate free shampoos and conditioners, and eliminating heat but for whatever reason I couldn’t figure out how to eliminate the frizz and get curl definition. Thank you so much for simplifying the method and products to use when first starting out.

I am happy to say I decided not to give up on the Curly Girl method. So I've continued using the sulfate free shampoos/conditioners. I now use the Tee Shirt instead of towels. And after watching more of your videos I've tried the "casting" with gel. And I now scrunch, scrunch, scrunch, let air dry. And slowly my curls are "remembering" to bounce back! Even my neighbor who is use to seeing my frizzy, out of control dry mess of hair has commented on how beautiful my hair is looking! My hope is in a month or so my natural curly hair is gonna look amazing. And it's already starting too! All these years I fought against my curly hair by flat ironing & curling with a curling iron. All because I didn't know how to work with my natural curls. I'm so happy I found your videos!! I have you to thank for teaching me the correct way to handle my curly hair!! 💕

Great tips! Thanks from a woman who has had good hair days by accident, likely when using cooler water, I now realize thanks to you. It seems like a lot of work, but honestly, I’m working hard right now, and not satisfied with the results. Maybe i can unlearn bad habits and try some new ones. I have avoided the CG method since it seemed that I’d need to jump in with both feet. But I’m gonna try the ‘two things’ and see how it goes. Thanks for posting!

I brush my hair when it's dry before the shower. It's satisfying and effective and when I wash it it goes back to the way it sits normally. I never hear people suggest this, but it feels like a clear solution. Some people think it breaks more when it's dry, but I definitely think it breaks more when it's wet. I tried not brushing my hair, but it's so much more satisfying to run a brush through it.
@ghost42944 жыл бұрын
yeah same I have 2a/2b/3c hair and I saw that you're supposed to brush when wet but for me I would brush it when wet and it would weigh down everything and pull my curls apart. So basically now I brush it when dry but with a wide toothed comb, not a full brush

I have straight hair but as I get older, Ill get 1 random curl right in the front and my mom and brother have curly/wavy hair. I want to see if this makes my hair a little wavy but the CGM is so daunting. This is helpful!
@Dontincludeme4 жыл бұрын
I turned 30 in June ‘20 and my hair always looked basically straight with a very very mild wave. My grandma had curly hair, my mom has wavy hair, and my dad has straight hair. Then in early October ‘20, I started noticing a little section of hair on the right going wavy. Like even after I’d comb it, the wave would stay. So after doing some research, I started applying some of the techniques, and now the waves are gradually taking over both sides. So far, I’ve just been consistently using a T-shirt instead of a towel, and squishing in my conditionner, and not combing after it’s dry (I do that in the shower). I haven’t figured out the next part yet, all the gel etc stuff once you get out of the shower, but I bought flaxseed today to make gel. I actually need to get it cut, maybe with some layers, it’s too long for the waves to really come out, I think

Your hair is gorgeous! Thanks for the tips. One thing I found that has saved my curls is aloe vera gel. It is the only product I use now in my hair after I wash it (I only wash with silicone, sulfate, etc free and I only wash it a couple times a week). No alcohol added, just the stuff you use for sunburns. It is absolutely AMAZING! I add some before I pat it dry and run my fingers through it then scrunch my hair with a little bit more. Most days I just dampen it with a spray bottle and add a little more Aloe. My curls are more defined, it doesn't weigh it down, they are soft and bouncy. If I use too much it feels crunchy so I just dampen my hair and it's all better. I never thought of using a Tshirt instead of a towel that's a great idea.

I started the curlt girl method in july this year. My hair used to be dead straight with a slight wave after i washed it and i would curl it everyday with a straightener. I chucked my straightener, silicone conditioner and sulphate shampoo in the bin and bought natutal conditioner and shampoo. Since doing the curly girl method my hair curls beautifully especially with the help from gel and curl mousse. I'm still way off from having effortless curly hair due to the constant damaging and colouring that i have done in the past, but im so happy to be natural again. My hair also seems to grow quicker since i dont damage it anymore which is a wonderful bonus.

I have coily curly hair and cutting silicones made a huge difference in the health of my hair. That plastic coating was keeping moisture from getting into my follicles. I already used silicone free shampoo and conditioner by lucky chance but I found out that my deep conditioner masks all had silicones! So basically none of my leave in conditioner or styling products were able to penetrate and moisturize my strands. After switching to silicone free deep conditioner my hair is way more moisturized. I do however use a styling mousse containing water soluble silicone as a final step because my hair is color treated. It doesn't require shampoo or clarifying to remove. You can Google a list of soluble and non soluble silicone types, but even still just know that you are suffocating your strands until you wash it out.

I've done the curly girl method to some degree for years. I stopped using a blow dryer about 20 years ago. The weird part was I stopped using sulfates because I recognized what it was doing to my hair. For a YEAR I did that and the texture got worse and worse, really only noticeable when wet. Yup, at some point I went on the internet and realized I probably had a horrible build up of silicone. I had gotten used to my hair being flatter and loose wave and when I clarified my hair it returned full force! Right now I need to stop wearing it in ponytails instead of conditioning it etc. on day 2. Often if I just spray with conditioner spray and maybe put more water, let it hand loose and it will curl smoothly and naturally. I am growing out my grey hair also. Thank you for your tips.

I'm so happy I found this video. I used to be a really curly little girl, then they cut my hair and I lost my curls; leaving a weird frizzy mess... When I was a teenager with all the "taylor swift" curls I tried to get them back, and I did! but I don't remember how I did it, Then I decided to cut my hair in a short bob and I lost my curls again... And now my hair is long, waaay too long, and I notice it wanting to curl A LOT, but I didn't know how to help it ( I almost never straighten it, I just put it on a bun or a ponytail) and now I'll try the things you said and hope for the best!! @CurlySusie6 жыл бұрын
Hey Taylor, I really suggest just trying to wash your hair with a Curly Girl Approved conditioner every second wash. You will be surprised at how well it removes oil. Get yourself a lightweight conditioner like Suave Naturals or Tresemme Naturals & a good sulphate & silicone free shampoo. You’ll also need a silicone & alcohol free gel. I bet your hair is way curlier than you think
@Alisha212106 жыл бұрын
I'd like to add that I stopped washing my hair daily and it became very greasy BUT then my hair got use to it and now I can go a couple days where I couldn't go 1 day. And me using something as strong as a dandruff shampoo can cause the scalp to over compensate with oil...So no matter what you'll end up greasy until your hair gets use to less washing and if it's getting stripped every day. And just in one time of only combing my hair in the shower and leaving it alone while dry.. my curls appeared a LOT .. where I was almost straight/wavy and frizzy. Try to only brush when wet. otherwise you'll break the curl pattern and end up with what you have now. ^^

My daughter has thin curly strands but a ton of them and dandruff. When she was little we used Dove products on her hair but we had to switch to Head & Shoulders. Then as she has hit teenage years her oil production has increased (as has her dandruff) and her dermatologist said we had to keep up with the H & S. Our hair stylist didn't have a good recommendation for curly dandruff suffering either. Curls tend to go with dryness - not oily.

Hi Lacey!! The only way to know for sure is trial & error. It the Silicones are truly water soluble you should be ok. When I FIRST started I had a Biolage conditioner that had some of the “peg” silicones in it & I used it until the bottle was empty. My hair was in rough shape back then so hard to say if it made a difference but I have to say that I didn’t really have a problem with build up... that wasn’t a great answer but hope it helped. I love how simple your routine is. What conditioners do you recommend for cowashing the scalp and hair? I have a similar curl type (2C/3A) and am worried about an oily scalp if I start this method. Another question! I work out as well and find that if I don’t wash my hair afterwards (currently using shampoo), my scalp feels itchy from the salt/sweat. Do you find that conditioner washing helps to cleanse the sweat and prevent itchiness in the scalp?
@CurlySusie6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I work out often & I also run so I sweat a lot! Conditioner washing is the way to go. I have to use a light conditioner or my hair gets weighed down. I like Down Under Naturals NUDE, Garnier Naturals & V05 Naturals (all inexpensive) you will be so surprised ... conditioner washing won't make your roots greasy (I was skeptical)

Thanks for the tips! I have a suspicion that my scalp may be itchy from using sulfates in the winter. I only wash my hair 1-2x a week at the moment and the itchiness gets worse the longer I prolong my wash days. I made some mistakes with coloring but have already been taking good care of my hair since I want to grow it out. I have an appointment tomorrow to get the last of the dye cut out. So I get a fresh start! I use shae moisture moisture retention shampoo and conditioner on my hair and typically just oil my hair with argon oil or coconut oil and I never use heat. Hopefully there won't be a transition period. I will say that I dried it with a t-shirt today and it was still super wet but it already looks better!

Personally I’ve had tight coil curls (3b/c) since I was a baby and I never straightened my hair until my dad did if for me when I was in 4th grade. For most of my child hood it was in braids and pony tails and it looked good but it definitely good have looked better. My dad did it for me every morning and had to learn from a Dominican woman what styling products to use. When I started to style it myself in middle school I wore it in buns and high ponytails with leave in conditioner and mouse cause i didn’t really know what to do with it and it was poofy. Until I was in 8th grade I never embraced it and now I’m starting my second year of high school exclusively showing off my curls. The fact that I was too lazy to straighten my hair because it was so long (down to my butt) made it easy to love my hair. Now I’m looking for better inexpensive products than Cantu and Shea Moisture, I’ll definitely have to try out some of your recommendations!!

Been using a Fructus conditioner with no silicone in it and it does make a big difference. I'm going to try not to use shampoo and see how it works out.

Is it easier for a newbie of the CGM to stick with one brand of products to avoid being overwhelmed?

I know you probably won’t see this, but I’m trying to somewhat start the curly girl method since my hair used to be in ringlets similar to yours but slightly curlier when I was a small child, but over washing my hair often throughout my whole life with a harsh shampoo and conditioner and brushing my hair almost every couple hours vigorously to reduce tangles and frizz, my hair has been reduced to a really frizzy 2a/2b wave. There’s a few ringlets under my normal hair that have a 3a curl. Whenever I try using any kind of hair gel, it’s reduces volume in my hair by a ton and makes it look oily and wet and gives it a hard rough texture, so it doesn’t really work for me. My mom doesn’t really want me to invest that much time into caring for my hair, and I currently have bottles of my previous shampoo and conditioner I haven’t finished yet, so she doesn’t really want me to buy new products because she thinks it’s a waste of the previous ones, so I can’t get any new products yet. Leave in conditioners give me greasy hair if I use too much and if I don’t use a lot it has no effect on my hair. And currently, my hair has random wavy, straight or curly pieces and the first 4 inches of my hair starting from my roots are extremely flat and if I try scrunching them they get a weird shape. My frizz is absolutely impossible to contain even if I brush my hair, and even though I’ve started using a microfiber towel. Uhh I know it’s a lot but do you have any advice for me?

would you be able to just wrap your head in a t-shirt and sleep with that? or use a silk alternative like nylon, polyester or rayon? thanks!
@CurlySusie6 жыл бұрын
Hi Drina!! I’ve slept with the Tshirt on. They call it over night plopping lol My hair is still damp in the morning so I’d scrunch some water & Gel into it and diffuse for literally 5 min and you are done :)

Thanks for the advise! I am learning about the curly girl method today and I am a night shower-er. Time to ginger a big t-shirt from goodwill! Is there a certain candidate is better than others?

I haven't read this Curly Girl book..... so it might already have this tip..... but as a fellow curly girl I just wanted yo give a good tip that might seem simple and obvious, but it easy to forget. Don't buy coats with zips. Go for buttons instead as curly hair gets a brushing when coming into contact with a zip on a coat and it's really annoying to have your lovely curly style ruined at the front by a coat zip x

Do you have a favorite conditioner? the CG rabbit hole is intense with products and nuanced tips, often contradictory. I appreciate this simple approach. I used the clarifying treatment yesterday so am only a baby beginner - day 1. Based on this video I should use a sulfate/silicone free conditioner from here on out and was hoping for a recommendation from you. I don't quite understand all the types of conditioners and washing/cowashing stuff. SOS :)

Im like 98% sure that the cgm is bs. I tried it my hair looked like crap the entire time. So I bought biolage hydrasource shampoo and conditioner, with sulfates in the shampoo, and bed head foxy curls. My hair looks fantastic. Sulfates aren't bad and silcones don't seal out moisture. My hair needs science. I think the most important thing for curly hair is no heat and no chemical processes.

Hi, thanks for this video! Do you have any where you actually demonstrate the step by step techniques? That is what makes videos different from articles and what would be most helpful in the future.

The first easy step by step and to the point video! Thank you for taking the time to share! My hair is terrible, growing up my hair would be brushed out into a frizz and tied up in a ponytail then a plait, now it's frizzy curly but still meh. I want to see if the curly girl method will work on my hair! I used to usually straighten my hair once a week - nowadays I'm just too lazy because it's never perfectly straight anyway. I do have one question though, eventually if my hair is as lovely looking as yours, would it be ok to straighten it now and then? Say once a month? (if that) Thank you again!

Thanks for posting this. I've been going through this transition over the past year. I've been trying different products and see what looks best. I have a collection going. Lol ❤️. I will try finger combing in the shower next time. I use a wide tooth comb, and I do comb the tangles out but my hair seems stringy when I do that.

Lots of leave conditioner after showering while hair is still soaking wet then apply gel and let dry to form cast. Do not touch until dry. Sometimes I diffuse dry because it takes my hair half the day to dry. this is what’s worked for me to cut the frizz. I use Sally’s gvp conditioning balm for leave in. But I’ve also used tresseme undone. Any conditioner that is silicone free.

Your hair looks great. When I do only conditioner and gel, it looks good at first-but I think my hair gets used to it after a few days and it starts to go limp and lifeless. My hair is very fine so I don't know if that has something to do with it. Also the curl pattern for the back of my head is defined ringlets, but the top layer of my hair is much loose and almost straight on top. What can I do to make more uniform curls all around?
@anilakhan9363 жыл бұрын
If you hair becomes lifeless and limp, that could mean too much hydration. You hair might need protein. Try switching the products between hydration and protein and see the results.
