Tim- Many Christians need to be reminded that even if you don't cuss yourself, you shouldn't even listen to it. There are Christians who will go to a comedy club that advertises" For the best adult humor around" and they think that they're not sinning because they themselves are not doing the dirty talking. We are not to have fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness(Eph.5:11) Thanks for sharing this video. You did a great job here.

@@BillBiggs1 I would personally say not sinful but obviously I wouldn’t say it’s good to use “pointless language” either, and this is coming from someone who says “dangit” and “crap” on occasion. One reason Christians should refrain from using curses is because it’s worldly, crude, crass, and offensive-qualities that do not glorify God. But this extends to every bit of our language, we shouldn’t say ANYTHING that doesn’t glorify our Lord whether it be swears, insults, or boasts. We should give loving thanks at all times.

What about the OMG and Jesus Christ. I cringe when I hear people say those words. I used to say them all the time. I had to actively think about it to quit it when those times arose.

I don't think Christians should cuss. And when I first got saved it was a battle to clean up my sailor mouth but I had the impression that that was no longer appropriate. For a while there had been a disconnect with the spoken word in person vs hearing it on TV, but now a days even hearing it on TV or music gives me pause. I would like to remove it completely from my life if I can help it.

Tim discusses three predominate errors that are being used to justify cussing as being fine. 1. To reach people, we need to use their language. 2. For someone to speak against professing Christians using profanity is being legalistic. 3. Someone says “Well, I don’t speak profanity, I only allow it in the music I listen to, and it doesn’t affect me.”

Can you please define the term "cussing" and/or "profanity"(depending on if you consider both words to hold the same definition or not) since two people can use the same term, but mean totally different things?.... Who do you believe is able to determine which words qualify for that definition between the speaker and the listener? If the listener is the one who can classify any word they believe classifies as meeting the definition of "cussing", that would be problematic for Christians. You might be able to understand that if you take the time and put the effort into thinking about and answering the questions I ask...

It’s kind of common sense which words are considered to be profanity. If it’s profanity or borderline profanity, your God-given conscience will convict you (Romans 2:15) and you should listen to that conviction- otherwise it’s sin. If you on the other hand ignore your conscience (and sin), the Bible mentions that your conscience can be seared (1 Timothy 4:2) and that God may hand you over to your depravity/sin (Romans 1:24-25).

@@GuessWhoAsks I think the real question is do you really want an answer? I answered your question. Profanity is common sense. It’s anything that you internally know (by your God-given conscience) to be wrong/inappropriate to say. Christians should even take it one step further and aim to avoid words and actions that could cause their fellow believers to stumble (Romans 14:13) or bring reproach upon the name of Jesus Christ, their savior.

I feel this is so hypocritical, as a growing Christian there are many trials we all go through at differnt times in our lives. I personally was brought up in a home of drugs, violence, and a whole lot of profanity. Just because you are a christian does not mean you have had a break through on every sin , like profanity. As I can continue to grow in my faith and now that I have the holy spirit within me to convict me of that sin, it is an ongoing fight for me. That does not make anyone a better Christian. Tepentance is turning away but we as the church should be praying and mentoring those in that current stage of struggle. Pray fo those who struggle and instead of condeming, profess God's word in a loving way not a judgmental way

Hi Krystal. Letting loose an occasional curse word because you’ve been doing it for years and then immediately repenting and trying not to do it anymore is totally different from someone who goes out of their way to use and excuse crude language with no regard for God’s character.

I know that this is 8 years old and may not get read, but what would you say about people like Jeff Durbin and Mark Driscoll (he's no longer reformed, but know that people still look up to his old stuff) using foul language to try and make a point? I've taken a stance that we shouldn't be like the world (as Christ in Matthew has stated) and sin just to make a point in preaching or evangelizing. I just wonder what your take would be on that.

this will more than likely not be seen, but this is the definition of legalistic teaching. i haven’t watched the entire video but i’m half way through and the word “grace” has not been mentioned once. fix your speech, your heart, your lifestyle for JESUS because YOU love him and because he loves you. not because you will go to hell if you cuss or slip up because we all will. this is false preaching. Please rely on Jesus to fix you rather than yourself and your fear of hell to fix you. you missed the whole point Tim

The word "grace" is mentioned at 5:30 when he's quoting Ephesians 4:27. And, you "haven't watched the entire video" and, somehow, though you didn't hear properly, nor watch the entire video, you mistakenly claim that hell is hung overhead as a punishment for using unwholesome speech, rather than correcting one's speech out of peaceful communion with God through Christ. You really missed this one Caleb.

@@calebhopkins8167 I can see how you got that, but Tim is teaching from Ephesians as a theme of Christian living, which, in this case, focuses upon the speech of a born again child of God. He's not saying that a Christian who swears as a regular matter of their daily life is going to hell for swearing, he's saying that if that is the way someone speaks, then they are probably not a born again child of God at all, and their speech is merely an indicator of their spiritual condition. Tim's recitation and expansion of Ephesians 4 and 5 here does a very good job covering the grace you claim is missing. Please watch the entire video.

@@spiritman-em4qr than maybe if that’s the way that he thinks than he should say that. all i’m saying is, is that in our country, assuming we’re all from the U.S. here, christianity is on the decline. we’re one of 17 countries that are on the decline of Christianity, however, the other 150+ countries are on the incline, which is wonderful! but Christians come to Jesus when they hear of his grace and love rather than how you have to keep every single commandment because we can’t do that. all of that to say, we have to watch the way that we preach and what we put out there because if we want to reach the lost, which is who we should be focused on over the saved. If you argue with that, it’s in scripture, He left the 99 to save the 1. we have to preach to them and every single message we bring and this is not aimed towards the lost by any means and in no way shape or form would a lost person come to Jesus after hearing this message

@@calebhopkins8167 This "message" is from one of Tim's personal bible studies with believers in a close group within his church, and is not aimed at immature believers who have not been biblically trained in the doctrines of law and grace, which, is the very reason he gives these talks. This is not meant to be a gospel presentation perse.

It really grieves me to hear Christians using coarse language and making inappropriate, crude jokes. I don’t think there is anything cute or funny about it. It is dishonouring to God. The worst part is the effect it has on the unbelieving world. Professing Christians, you are ambassadors for Christ. Souls are on the line! If you like to bring attention to yourself by using profanity and crude humour, please do not identify yourself as a Christian at all. It is not fitting, to say the least.
