UPDATE: A Gallo is sending me a custom mixing palette that I was able to choose to fill in the gaps to use in my upcoming videos and watercolor classes. They are highly pigmented and I found that even though they serve half pans, a little goes a long way so use a ceramic palette or the tin to put the color down before adding to your paper so you can control the strength and value without wasting any of these gorgeous paints. Your paint will last so much longer adding value and longevity to your watercolor palette.

I am getting Rembrant watercolors for my Birthday I love the layering ability of the watercolor. Then for Christmas I ordered 42 pans of Roman Szmal watercolor. I also enjoy my Regina’s watercolor palette they are amazing too! Love and light to you!

Above all it’s important to have fun with your water colour and enjoy what you’re using. I love keeping my watercolours together so that I can paint with one brand at a time it gives me such a great sense of the formulas by brand.

Very pretty colors and awesome choices. I'd have a hard time choosing them over Roman Szmal though. The price point is hard to pass up. I haven't added AGallo to my collection yet. I'd consider a couple colors if I buy from the next Jackson's sale. Thank you for the gorgeous swatching.

Yes i know what you mean. I think it comes down to options for most people. If you are in Italy, it's probably a value to go to the store and pick out your palette. There are some colors not available by Roman Szmal just like there are ones Szmal has that Schmincke doesn't. From my experience the price point is cheaper on Roman Szmal (full pans) but the A Gallo palette box comes with a beautiful high quality professional travel brush 'bonus value' and the pigment load on the a Gallo seemed more intense if that's even possible even in a half pan. I can't render a full judgement yet because I need to use them more but from swatching it seems like a little went a long way and in most cases ended up wasted when I washed my brush. I would definitely use a palette next time to get paint off my brush before going to paper now that I have had that first experience with them.. They also dried really nicely without loosing their strength or looking dusty. Lots more to come.

It’s so funny how we all view colors soooo different! My moody palette brand is Schmincke, I built a whole moody seascape one, and I don’t use or care for them for much else but I know how much you love them. Isaro is definitely moody in general too. My choice for A Gallo was their naturelle palette for vintage vibes. I love how each brand has different strengths and each artist has their own interpretations! Overall though, my heat belongs to Holbein and DS Primateks.

Yes so true. I haven't enjoyed Holbein because they are mass produced and I find them missing some unique elements that I love in watercolors. I do love the Daniel Smith line but so many issues with fugitive colors. Opera Pink and Alizarin Crimson,etc.. Man, Moonglow. Roman szmal is also a handmade paint, highly pigmented, and simply lovely watercolor paint at a much lower price point. I'm wondering how A.Gallo is justifying that price point since there are other handmade paints not quite so expensive? Although their paint is nice and the colors are beautiful....I just can't with that price point. Thanks for showing these! They are gorgeous but goodness....I would never want to use them for fear of using them up and having to buy more...LOL! Your paint mixes are so lovely Jackie....😍

I don’t think Roman Szmal are handmade, at least I haven’t read anywhere that they are handmade. And my Roman Szmal Paints have normal pigmentation; I didn’t find them heavily pigmented. I have Quinacridone Gold, Quinacridone Burnt Sienna, and Quinacridone Maroon.

@@awatercolourist I had to recheck Jackson’s to be 100% sure before I replied to you! I know A Gallo are expensive, but just have a look at the prices of Greenleaf & Blueberry handmade watercolors. They are far too expensive for me. Occasionally I get tempted to try out a half pan of genuine malachite, but I just can’t get over the price!

@@shadowguard3578 I’m trying to save for A Gallo paints, but I’m not sure I can order them where I live; customs is expensive and complicated. So, more money for me! But if I ever find myself in Italy in the vicinity of Assisi, I’ll definitely SPLURGE! 😂 But I must admit that handmade paints are very expensive.

Schmincke has a Caput Mortuum too. I think that is better to compare then the Perylene Violet 🤗 Btw. I have the Signature 24 Set from A. Gallo and love all the colors 👏🏼🤗

I was wondering about that and I figured someone would tell me if they did. It wasn't on the dot chart unfortunately so I wonder how it paints. This one was beautiful Morellone (pr101 + pr102) I wonder if it could be accurately compared to Caput Mortuum or if it just looks close to it. Either way it's stunning even when dry. so is that Notturno and Harbor Blue.

@@JacquelineJax I will check at the weekend if I have the Caput Mortuum by Schmincke. I have definitely to many paints 🙈😂 When I have it I will write how they compare. I absolutely love the Notturno and the Harbor Blue. I have also the Pietra Rosa which is a really stunning color. 🤗

@@JacquelineJax I cannot believe but I have found it in an instant. The ColorCard says the pigments are PR101 and PR206 and it’s a Violet, deep red brown. 👏🏼🤗

in the roman szmal video you also said, the potters pink is so smooth. but I wonder, is that an attribute that one looks for, when using potters pink? I like about it, that it is granulating and that it does intersting things, when mixed with other colours. that it is easy to mix a natural tint od dusty rose with an interesting texture. sometimes a dreamy look. could I achive that with a smooth pink?

Maybe she is trying to describe it as not as streaky as the Roman Szmal? Not as hard to rewet? I do love my Roman Szmal and don't think mine is streaky at all but I guess it depends on the paper.....I just can't afford A.Gallo but I'm sure they're very nice from what I've seen of them.

I'm not sure. I love a mix of granulation but no streaking. That's what makes watercolor most flexible for my projects. I love using granulated colors like this to do sky and background washes and I can't think of anything I personally do that would require streaking qualities. Thus smooth application along with highly pigmented color is a quality I prioritize. It's also a pain if I have to dig to get enough color from the paint. I don't love having to glaze a background in order to get a color on the paper so highly pigment loads are a plus.

@@JacquelineJax I don't understand at all. I only have the one by schmincke. I don't know about it being streaky. don't think, anybody needs that. what I meant was, when I think of potters pink, maybe the word smooth was misleading to me. I don't associate with it qualities like e.g. distributes evenly on the paper. I was rather thinking - smooth like in senneliers smooth tectue!? English is not my native languages - as you may have notied anyway 🙂

Harbour Blue’s composition is very similar to Roman Szmal’s Ocean Blue. I think Ocean Blue is PB15:3 + PBr24.

They are so different. The Harbor Blue from a Gallo is a deep blue green with secs of indigo or black through it once dry. I jus love it. I see a but of the PB15 coming through as well.

@@JacquelineJax Thanks for the description. It’s amazing how the relatively small differences between PBr8 and PBr24 produce such lyrical differences in the paints.

@@awatercolourist PBr24 is an outstanding pigment but typically I've only seen it in Naples yellow so its strange that it was in Ocean Blue as the yellow base mixed with Phthalo Blue (PB15:3). I would never have though to mix the two but goes to show you that there is always something I haven't done yet and I need to make videos mixing really odd colors together to see what comes.
