A quick video to demonstrate how to fit the mass loading and damping kit for the DT770. It is simple and straight forward to fit and squeezes a little more detail and resolution out of these already very competent headphones. The kit also works on the custom one pro
The kit consists of some bituminous vibration material and some self adhesive lead weights.
The vibration damping absorbs some of the negative sound coming off the back of the driver stopping ti bouncing back through the driver cleaning up the sound a bit
The weights are used to mass load the back of the driver. Giving the driver more mass to push against makes sure more of the energy from the driver goes into making sound rather than just vibrating the driver casing back an forth.
Overall it gives you tighter bass, a slightly better sound stage and a little more detail across the board. Also.. its cheap, easy to fit and easy to remove - what more could you ask for ;)

I just did a similar mod after putting it off for a long time on my 80 ohm version. I used a material like dynamat, so 1,5 mm thick with alu foil on top of it, but not original dynamat, it's some rip off, but I was told by the car-audio salesman it performs exactly the same and they use it all the time, it certainly feels and look the same as dynamat to me. I put a big circle piece in the bottom of the cup like in this video, then I cut long 0,8 cm wide stripes and put them along the side walls of the ear cup, making sure to not cover the bass ports on the side of the cups, and basically covering the entire inner surface of the cup in this material. Then I used a 5 cm diameter foam piece, 0,5 cm thick...just regular gray open cells foam that you find in packages with motherboards, graphics cards, etc. And I put that on top of the material, it gets held in place once the baffle is placed in because the little circular piece of plastic with felt on that goes around the actual driver holds the foam in place too, and it effectively reduces the amount of "air" available to the driver a little bit. Then I put rings of material on the back of the driver, making sure to not overlap the little hole in the middle at all. First I put one ring....but then I put another one. And...let me tell you, don't hesitate putting more layers of dampening material on top of each other, it just gets more efficient. The difference in bass tightness is, well, almost extreme, without exaggeration. I know because I kept several songs on my test playlist, songs I knew were kind of boomy and muddy on the DT770 80, kept the volume knob at exactly the same place before and after the mod, and after the mod, all the muddiness was gone, and I actually felt the bass got stronger, sort of more visceral and impactful, but at the same time tighter. Adding more layers of dampening material onto the back of the driver brings the bass under more and more control. At 3 layers it got a bit too tight and sterile, almost DT880-like, so I kept it at 2 layers. Really makes the DT770 go from "pretty good", to "damn good". I usually avoid listening to them since my T1's do absolutely everything better than DT770's, but now I actually prefer the DT770's for electronic and bass heavy music because the bass is more tight and satisfying than on the T1's, and it also drops down deeper more effortlessly. One more thing I noticed is the microdetail. Stuff like very, very subtle or silent buzzes, sparkles, crackles, etc. that happen in tracks that I never noticed before, but now I do. NOTE that I used the 80 Ohm version, which is more bass heavy than the 250 Ohm version, so the foam, covering the entire cup and using 2 layers of material would probably make the 250 Ohm version too bass light.

Just installed them, awesome sound! Be aware though that for newer models (mine's from mid 2017), the left driver can barely be taken out of the case because the internal strands are super short. It made it quite tedious to attach the masses.

We have had a few pairs where a hair has got inside and made a buzzing noise when it touches the driver - you can normally fix it by opening them up and blowing out any hairs or dust.

In my case the damping disks were too thick as a result it was impossible to clack on the holding rings, so i had to remove the anti-dust disks to finish reassembling.

Hey mate, got any tips on fixing the DT770's? Got the left ear cutting out when moving head at certain angles. Don't really want to take them apart without any knowledge of what to do as knowing me , will make it worse! Not sure if its the jack plug or the headphone itself. Any advice on what to do would be great. Thanks.

Sounds like they have a break in the cable somewhere. Changing the cable is pretty straight forward if you know your way round a soldering iron. If you check out our other vids there should be one on changing the cable on some 990s - the method is the same for the 770 and we keep the cables in stock if you need them

I have some old 250ohm DT770 pro's, thinking about taking them apart and modding them a bit. need new pads anyways, and wanna ditch the stupid curly cable. mainly use them for gaming. any recommendations for other mods, such as this, or maybe replacing the actual drivers?

What would I need to run this off my FiiO E07K? Not sure about this Balanced Conversion. I don't care to have two holes, one in each side.

Hi - I am not 100% sure but I don't think the E07K supports a balanced output so just a standard 3.5mm jack would be best

noob here- I've noticed damping and mass loading is popular for closed-backs... because an open-back has less of that resonance issue, would similar methods not have little to no effect? what about just mass loading- what would that do to an open-back generally speaking?
@CustomCans
@CustomCans 8 жыл бұрын
+Cal Chan Yes you can get good results mass loading open backs and a lot of people also fiddle around with damping on open backs but it it normally just covering up flat surfaces on the casing and driver which may interact with the sound. There are also some like the T1 which already have plenty of mass on the driver but being semi open, can be improved with just some damping added here and there. It is one of those fun things to fiddle and experiment with to tune the sound to your preferences

Jason Rhys-Thomas Should - but does it? Is the change audible and big enough? I've done several mods on my T1's and never heard a difference that was worth fiddling around even though people claimed it's a huge improvement.
@CustomCans
@CustomCans 10 жыл бұрын
derbigpr500 Yeh - the T1 is a great pair of headphones and they don't have a lot of room for improvement without redesigning the enclosure. We have had a few pairs in for re-cabling which makes a little difference as the stock cable has quite high capacitance because of the shielding but some of the mods that involve attaching fluff to the bar on the back of the driver don't see to do a lot of difference. Closed backed headphone normally respond more to mods but there is no guarantee you will hear the difference - a lot of it is down to the source and your hearing. I originally designed and tested this kit so I am a bit biased but we are selling quite a few of these kits now so you should see some more reviews on forums soon. We did a few tests on our home made HATS system and with the kit the DT770 250 ohm drop down lower so you get a bit more sub bass but waterfall chars don't always show the whole picture. Hopefully when I get some free time I can do some more tests and make some more charts. I know it is not really helpful but we do the same kit for the Sennheiser HD25 and we have been selling them for more than 6 months now so there are more people out there using the kit. If you search custom cans mass loading kit or Uber HD25 and you should find a few reviews and thoughts on the kit. If you fancy testing this kit and doing a little review from a skeptics point of view just let me know and we can probably sign you up as a tester J

Yes, it is most noticable in the sub bass region with more detail so you can hear more of the texture of the bass and a little more bass extension so they drop down lower

Im also considering getting the balanced DT 1770 (if it wasn't for the fact the standard 1770's are only around £345 on Amazon), and would be interested in having the cups connecting cable in the same colour as the actual headphone cable (like the lime green version in the last picture on the actual page), but don't se any option of specifying this from the menu? +Swe Device The 250 ohm should not have that problem - they may have a slight fault if other headphones are not doing the same thing on your fiio if they are still under warranty it may be worth contacting beyer If they are outside the warranty, this should give the 250s slightly more bass meaning you should not have to use the bass boost but it you have a faulty driver then this won't help
