---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A pair of 'standard pliers' would be used for this purpose. The idea is to make two 'cavites' in the ends of pliers' jaws. Just enough to let the hog-rings' elbows be placed inside. As the pliers are steel hardened the first step would be to untemper the ends of the pliers.
I have used the heat of a stove, but it would be faster if a torch is used instead. Becareful with the plastic covers if you want to preserve them. Let the pliers cool naturally. After having these ends unhardened it would be easier to drill in.
I have added a flexion spring that it is not really necessary if we cannot get one.
Nowadays, I am conscious most of these tools can be purchased from many upholstery suppliers or via internet from well known distributors. But, I am also aware there are still places where we can not get one.
Many years ago it was somehow difficult to get these pliers and the upholsterers were compelled to make their hog-ring pliers by themselves including the automotive hog-rings.
On the other hand, I would say there is such a kind of enjoyment when we make our own upholstery tools!
I hope you find some inspiration and usefulness in this video!
Cesar

Awesome!!! I already purchased a pair of hog ring pliers that came with hundreds of hog rings, but after watching your video I already know that I will never have to buy hog rings never again, being able to make them myself, and I can even modify a pair of pliers in case that the other one gets broken! The idea of adapting a spring to the pliers is excellent, and getting it hot to work easily with it is awesome ;-)

I would say, it is a 'just in case' homemade tool. I would recommend to also make the homemade hog-rings if for some reason you run out of the good ones. Factory hog-rings are cheap and much better. I mean steel wire and has pointed ends to penetrate the material. If you want some entertainment you could do one yourself. Thanks so much for making this channel an interesting upholstery forum!

@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 5 жыл бұрын

@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 6 жыл бұрын

The main idea is the use of tools we would have at hand, I mean a broken screwdriver, drill, a hardened nail, etc. I have in my shop different size chisels and I would have used one instead of the broken screwdriver. I also have a mototool I would have used instead of drilling. But, not all the people have appropriate or expensive tools to make a pair of simple hog-ring pliers.

This is an option just in case it is difficult to get a hog ring pliers. Most of the upholsterers in the past used to manufacture their own artisan tools. Besides, it makes the upholstery students put their minds into action. Of course, nowadays it is much easier to get them on the internet. www.amazon.com/Mr-Pen-Hog-Ring-Pliers/dp/B08NSQHGHF

It is used in car upholstery. There are places where it is very difficult to find a pair of hog-ring pliers. That is the reason for the video. Although, these pliers are cheap on internet. This video shows the use of this item:kzbin.info/www/bejne/a17Rfq1_d8-hn6s
