A viewer sent in this B-unit so I could try and re-paint to a Canadian National paint scheme, I think it turned out alright other then the fact I did it backwards...

Looks great. Only up grade I would recommend is a high quality auto body masking tape. Instead of the stuff you get at a home center

Today, I was going to Disneyland to see the new Star Wars. But it was already full and I didn’t want to waste $600 on the tickets, so instead I went to Arnies model trains again. I got an sd40t-2, A Powered sd40-2 Union Pacific, and a UP dash 9 dummy. There was a Weathered UP engine for $15. Thank god they tested it for me because it didn’t work. I check the Athearn dummy section, lots of them were undecorated. There were also Dash 9s, sd40-2s, gp38-2s, and many dummy units you can count! Also Great video! Oh and one more thing, I saw a HO k4 and a Bachmenn EZ command for $15 yesterday. Today, they didn’t have the K4 and the Bachmenn DCC controller.

3m makes a really good painter's tape that dosen't bleed on the edges and wont leave tape residue

I second Rockets comment! Masking tape ALWAYS leaves a bit of a rough edge. 3M blue painter's tape never does.

I know painting isn't your profession but perhaps, I believe, is the fine modelers paint that Tamya makes. I've seen Marty's Matchbox Makeovers use their fine surface primer so I assume they also have the same in paint. Also I believe there are rattle can caps you can buy for cheap that spray less paint so you get a finer finish and not lob paint on so thick.

I'd use Blue Painter's Tape rather then the masking tape. Reason why? It's more flexible and the edge will stick better without leaving any residue.

I sincerely hope you read this before you do anything on the B unit ! You did not paint it incorrectly !!! You actually got the paint job correct ! Look at the way that the “cooling radiator fan” is on the “back of the A unit”, if you pick up the B unit and turn it around and put it back down you’ll have the radiator cooling fan in the back like the A-unit ! Problem solved ! I also noticed that you’re A unit is a PA-1 Whereas your B unit is a PB-1 basically meaning that it’s a larger six Motored three wheeled truck, were as your A-unit has four wheel trucks ! but I did enjoy the information and I got a chance to see what your paint jobs look like and you did not do a bad job as you think ! 🌊🐺👍

Good job! You might ant to get a small tool so that when you apply the tape, take the tool and go along the edges to seal them down. It will helps stop paint from running under the tape. Still a good job. Muse

That is an Alco PB-1 shell. The Passenger versions of their FA series was an attempt to compete with EMD F-series. The PA and PB series did not have the traction effort or horsepower needed to pull its trains.

When you apply the tape use a toothpick to press the edges down tight to the body and details. Good tape (3M) will stretch a little bit over the rivet lines and sometimes even the handrails. This will prevent the bleeding. I've custom painted over 4000 model trains, from Z to G for over 30 years;.

SMT - Classic Trains Magazine often shows locomotives & cars in service that have errors on their paint schemes. So you are emulating the prototype paints shops! Also, the steam generator is closer to any trailing passenger cars!

Just some advise: next time, use Tamiya's modeling tape. It seals much better than any off-the-shelf masking tape, and is better for finer work on small models. Use a toothpick to burnish it around the edges, and around ribs and other bumps on the shell. Also, give lighter coats of the white and wait for them to start to dry for a bit before spraying more. The wetter and heavier you lay the stripes on, the more likely it will seep under any poorly masked areas.

I just bought a brand new Bachman dcc equipped GP 38-2, I was running it on my dc layout for a couple hours last night. When I went to use it today, it does not do anything and I know power is in the track cause my other locomotives run. Any suggestions?
@SMTMainline
@SMTMainline 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what exactly would be causing that, possibly a problem with the decoder. What type of controller were you using with the locomotive?

@westtexasrailfan

You probably blew the decoder. You really need a DCC controller to run DCC equipped locomotives properly. If you get too high of a voltage (on DC), it WILL blow the decoder! So I suggest either stick with DC, or go full-on DCC!!

I never believed model railroad Locomotives should come with a DCC decoder because anything computer controlled is going to have problems because digital electronics generally require an internet connection as DCC does and a server being down (as they often are) shouldn't prevent a model railroad from operating. Clear coating only works for preventing details from flaking off or to give it a more metallic look.

Apparently the best results come from using an airbrush. I personally hate using an airbrush because it's a real pain to clean up. I use spray paint too, but I only do major paint jobs on structures. I've done spray paint jobs on trains before and from my experience do not like the outcome very much. I paint structures, small details on trains and other stuff, and even a bit of weathering, but I do not like painting trains because of the outcome.

Since the background color of this loco is black...to get rid of the white bleed, use a very fine point Sharpie. That'll take care of it, and you won't even be able to tell. Spray the whole shell with a flat clear (and as someone mentions below, Tamiya is really good) and you'll be golden.
@corwin81

I wouldn’t use Sharpie. It’s actually purple in some lighting. Paint marker has a more accurate color.

Frogtape works best for what you are doing, and you shouldn't need a clear coat. A couple smoothly applied light coats are better than heavy bursts. You don't want to apply it so close either. Still very nice job Harrison. A and B units are usually the same size. That B unit looks a little long, what is the A unit that goes with it? Thanks for sharing! 👍 👍 👍

I did about the same mistake on an AHM Fairbanks-Morse C-Line B Unit. On the model A-Unit the Zebra stripes appear to be slanted to the rear on the top, as though the bottom of the stripe were rooted down and the wind blows the tops back. I followed this same pattern on the B Unit. Later, I noticed in the prototype, the lines only slant one way, and on the other side they slant the same way if the unit were turned around. Like: d////////]-[/////////]-[/////////b (As an A-B-A Unit, if you will) but I got d////////]-[\\\\\\\\\]-[\\\\\\\\b. Of course, I'm not Canadian.

I really dont think it matters which way u painted it. If they were both a units, they would mate them butt 2 butt, not butt 2 head. So the b unit being turned round might b more proto than u think

A secondary thought. The only time the b unit will "have to face front" is when pulling a passenger cars. Steam generator and hoses are all in the back

A cheapie way to get rid of over-spray, especially on a unit whose background color is black....A SHARPIE!!! A fine or extra-fine point will get rid of that white over-spray, and unless you look at it with a magnifying glass...you won't ever see it.
