Well done Harrison. Doing a little paint job archeology I see. Atlas in the 80s early 90s had some paint they used that just would not come off no matter how many tricks I used on a C&O RSD 4/5 . It took off the graphics but didn't touch the blue so some light gray primer got her ready for the Chicago & Northwestern yellow to come.

Hi man. Hey I wanted to give you a tip on removing paint. I have always used brake fluid. Just submerge whatever you want to strip for like over night. The paint will just peel off in layers. No scrubbing. Then wash as usual before you paint.
@balakishakis66143 жыл бұрын
Bleeding paint is pesky. But my science teacher talked about building wooden ships in a bottle. And he said he'd prevent bleeding by spraying the already applied color over the tape before applying the second color. I take his word for it since he knows chemistry. It makes sense if you think about it, let the same color bleed through so the other color doesn't.
@garysprandel18173 жыл бұрын
Sounds like spraying the masked color would still bleed but since it's the same color it doesn't matter but by doing that it seals any leak spots in your masking.

To touch up small bleeds at the top of grooves .. get the plastic top off a sipper bottle of water (the pull out to drink and push in to seal type). Hold it at a slight angle and spray the original colour (from very close range) into the top in the direction of the angle till you get a small pool of paint.. You can use a fine paint paint brush over the bleeds..

As an alternate way of stripping paint from your method and the brake fluid method, try rubbing alcohol (91% preferred or 70%). Get a plastic tub large enough to hold your shell with a lid. Fill the tub to just fully submerge the shell and wait about an hour. Take a old fashioned medium toothbrush and begin scrubbing. If it’s not coming off as well as needed, leave it soaking overnight. Once it starts coming off continue with the tooth brush and then switch to wooden cuticle sticks (drug store - ladies nail polish section) you can sand them down to thin or thick points as they wear down. You might want to locate some old dental picks to probe those pesky panel cut lines and lovers, be gentle, a slip will scratch it. I use two tub, one for the soak & scrub, then the 2nd one for final rinse. Decant the soak solution after the old paint settles to the bottom and add more fresh alcohol to top it off. Much safer on your hands and skin than the more caustic chemicals, but it is flammable (so are the others). Keep the lids on the tubs to stop evaporation. I use this method on 1/32nd scale slot cars that I want to repaint. Also note that some paints may resist the alcohol and you have to resort to your old methods.

Next time you want to do some body modifications to rolling stock try bondo or some other auto body filler, it's much lighter than plaster and dries harder. I used clay at first to fill holes for lights that shouldn't be there, or windows that shouldn't be there or were the wrong shape on some of my locos and rolling stock, which is good but not as tough or hard as bondo. I started using bondo after I used it to fill the dents in a car I bought, working with it made me realize it was harder and lighter than the clay I was using.

And I thought I'd mention this in passing...those missing sections of track? That wouldn't be difficult to replace with cut sections of Atlas flex-track. Unless you plan on laying new rail yourself...THAT my friend is a process!

@SMTMainline3 жыл бұрын
For some reason not all Swedish steam trains have their pistons located on the side.
@kenhanks96203 жыл бұрын
Early steam locomotive development in England, and so in much of Europe, had the placement of the cylinders on the inside of the loco frame members. Such placement had the advantage of reducing side clearance dimensions (often an issue in the rail lines being built in already developed areas), and also it had some advantage in the balancing of the driving mechanism as well as keeping those moving parts safer from damage along the right of way. North American practice evolved with greater clearances being available but the biggest advantage of outside placement was much greater ease of maintenance and as cost of skilled labor (and complexity of designs) increased outside cylinder placement became dominant in most operations world wide.
