Never say you're 100% sure when the customer is worried about their health. Instead, say "As far as I know, it is okay, but if you're worried, we can prepare something else for you" to avoid any potential trouble.

Until they get the recall call, they believe it is fine. I understand that.
@1nm13 ай бұрын
I understand it too, but by the same token when it is something as serious as listeria in an item that is typically NOT cooked, it wouldn't hurt for the restaurant to be more proactive too. At a minimum contact the supplier and get written (emailed) confirmation that the food they were supplied has has NOT been recalled (instead of waiting for them to call you).

I feel like this situation would end up in a 1 star review on yelp with something like "tried to make sure my salad was safe and waiter laugh it off #listeriaLettuce"
@1nm13 ай бұрын
TBH if they left a 1-star review they deserved it too, since it WAS recalled. Remember it is the RESTAURANT'S responsibility to ensure the items they serve are NOT on the recall list. Why they are wasting time by WAITING for their supplier to contact them FIRST, instead of checking the recall list themselves is beyond me.

I work at a grocery store, and last week people were calling all freaked out about a recall on some deli meet. They all "just saw it on the news!" Okay, but do get the whole story. The recall was in July, and the reports on illnesses and (sadly) 2 fatalities were released by the state department of health on August 8. The tv news just got around to reporting it in late August.

I did not know that lettuce can be contaminated with listeria. We had an outbreak here in South Africa in about 2017. But here it was in cold meats and viennas (hotdogs as Americans say). One of the companies that were producing the products went bankrupt.
@zevsero91703 ай бұрын
In ZA a “vienna” with no other description is a sausage?! In Australia it’s a loaf of bread!
@anndownsouth50703 ай бұрын
@zevsero9170 Yes, and to make it a hotdog, you have to heat up the sausage and put it in a bun(we call them bread rolls) with condiments. Like the street hotdogs you see people buy in NY.

@@anndownsouth5070 In the US a sausage alone is not a hot dog, it’s a frank or a wiener. And there’s no such thing as a vienna. As I said, in AU a vienna is a kind of bread.

It never occurred to the waiter that this was new information and that maybe it just hadn't reached his restaurant yet? Why persuade her to eat the very thing she was afraid of so she'd be sick and blaming you? Gosh tell her "thanks for the listeria tip, let's get you something without romaine."
