Without sounding too cheesy. I tend to wind down with a brewskie after wrenching on bikes all day and tune in to your channel. My friends make fun of me that I work on bikes all day and watch another guy working on bikes when I get home. But I have to say, you are my Bob Ross of Bike Mechanics man.. The music, the sounds of familiar noises not working, then working is very soothing. Not to mention, I think guys like me tune in for the rants. It's like listening to your shop bud 😆. I like to think that some bikes I work on have souls. Sometimes you do a little extra for the bike, not so much the for the customer but for the soul of the bike. You definitely showed this soul some love. Love your vids man 🤙🏽

@@noisepuppet No. Man has soul and spirit. Bikes have spirit. They have spirit by virtue of the fact they are made of metal and metal is of the Earth and everything of the Earth has spirit. My favorite bike was a stolen one. I did'nt steal it. In 8th grade me and my friend Steve were cutting through a patch of woods across from the school (Aldrich Jr. High in Warwick , RI) and we come upon these two monkey style 20 inch bikes. They were painted the industrial green that was so often used by bike thieves so we knew what the deal was. We said "Well -they're ours now". I took mine home , repainted it a gun metal blue. I found some solid bar steel and used it for the seat post and also reinforced the rear supports for the banana seat. It came to pass that my brother and I took turns carting each other to this kid Jimmy's house who lived in another neighborhood . I have very fond memories of that bike. I think because , simply, it was free.

Good call on refurbishing the rear hub. My experience over...dammit, over half a century, is as you state: For the use intended, the bearings don't have to be perfect. And often ones that aren't perfect, if set-up right, wear themselves even over time. The right grease, bearings and tolerances are key. The lady, of whom you speak well, deserves to keep the wheel she has. The brake blocks are worn in to match, it's a known and trusty item. A used generic wheel replacement might have even more issues down the road...literally. I noted how well the wheel idled when you had it on the truing stand. Those bearings were fine. Excellent job!

Really appreciate what you do in these videos. Not only the fixing of the bikes and explaining what and why you are doing it, but especially the talking about the real, on-the-ground experience of working in the industry - all of this is very helpful. I'm someone who has the make-it-work frankenbike who likes learning about how things work and figuring out how I fix and improve. I've been watching more and more bike shop guys working on bikes to learn and maybe see if working in a bike shop is for me. Of all the channels I follow, your content seems to be the most in line with where I am and what I'm interested in. Your content also feels most like sitting in the shop with someone who knows what's what and talks about it in a relatable way. Thank you for what you do!

I'm an amateur mechanic and bike flipper and always service the hub bearings on the old bikes I'm fixing up. I just feel like people appreciate going the extra step and knowing that you really put in the extra effort. $50 seems totally fair there and I'm sure she'll appreciate the bike working smoother and having a matching wheel. The only thing I'd say is maybe instead of saying "It's good enough for who it's for" that I'd rephrase that as "It's good enough for the purpose it's serving." I know you don't mean any negative by saying that, but some people might read into that as picking on the customer versus just being pragmatic about what purpose the bike serves (which as you explained around 17:00 is for general purposes and commuting).

Excellent work, as always. My wife gifted me a thin LED torch/magnet, useful thing for extracting those bloody loose ball bearings. Getting these cup and cone hubs running perfectly after a service is definitely somewhere between art and science, and is a skill I am yet to 100% master. It’s always useful to watch someone properly skilled do it, I learn something every time.

In my experience, when once touched they will get loose or something else rather quickly thereafter again. There is merit in industrial bearing cartridges.
@CodSlap
@CodSlap Ай бұрын
@@rosomak8244 There are definitely merits to cartridge bearings - plop the old one out, press a new one in, hey presto, go ride. I chose cartridge bearings for the headset and my bottom bracket, but I still like the humble cup and cone hubs for my wheels that without a doubt see the most revolutions of all the bearings in a bicycle. It’s a simple system that lasts pretty much forever in light use when set up correctly, and they’re also surprisingly robust mechanically. There’s definitely a reason why the loose ball bearing systems have stuck around for as long as they have. I once had a wheel that the factory botched up, and the bearings on one side of the rear wheel were literally rolling and grinding against the freehub locking bolt instead of the cone. The resulting black mix of grease and metal shavings completely seized up the bearings on that side… and I rode for another 20 kilometers or so before I even noticed. 😁 Right then and there I decided that I’m going to stick with these bad boys: if they ever fail catastrophically again, no matter where and at which speed, their going skrrrrrrrt is unlikely to kill me. 🤪 (Knock on wood). Cup and cones are definitely something that you should always get set up by a professional, though, or alternatively you yourself have to be mechanically minded and really understand the quirks of the system well. 👍

Your charge for this service was certainly reasonable. Around here base labor rate is $125/hour and most shops would not even take on this job. I ran a 2X crank with a 9 sp triple shifter; the wider triple front derailleur cage space together with the extra 1/2 trim allows for more chain clearance in the front. Nice video.

Hi Bike Farmer, only remove the cone and lock nut from the non drive side then it'll be in the right position when you put it back, can still clean the cone well on the axle. Noticed they have Marathon Plus tyres fitted, for that 'feels like riding through treacle experience'. We often used to pull a broken skewer out of a crunchy wheel to find the axle snapped also. Nice job.

I always disassemble from the non-drive side and leave the drive side cone and lock nut alone unless someone else previously messed up the spacing. If you have to fully disassemble the axle, then it helps to measure the length of axle exposed (outboard of the lock nuts) on both sides before starting disassembly.

Long time viewer, first time commenting. I liked the questions that you asked. Should I replace this or repair this bike? Am I charging too much? My first job was at a bike shop and I love building and repairing bikes. I went on to work for a computer company that is constantly berating for their non-repairability. Many other companies are being chastised for the same thing. Bikes are so repairable that they are the most “green” machines in existence today. As far as your labor rates go, my crazy ex-wife spent $2K+ to get certified in a no touch healing scheme. Charging a minimum of $95 an hour to heal someone over the phone. Your rates are reasonable, and you provide a tangible service that benefits your customers. Charge that labor rate, or more for keeping that “damaged part” out of a landfill. Pivot your marketing to the “low carbon footprint” conscious market. I love your shop model and may do the same in my town.

I hear ya on the rebuilding a hub deal. after 15 years my Trek 7.2FX needed balls and ones for its front wheel. I tried mightily to get replacement parts for it. it has Schimano hubs so I thought, no biggie, right? 3 different sets of cones and balls were all wrong for the job. Finally broke down and bought all new wheels for all 3 of our bikes, as the cost was more than acceptable ($70 for the fronts, $80 for the rears) and was just easier than the days of frustration researching and failing. I even considered being really stupid and buying just complete hubs and doing a full wheel rebuild. Hubs alone were almost as expensive as complete wheels with the same hubs! I try not to throw away stuff as much as possible, but it just didn't make sense. I still kept the old wheels for parts. kid broke 2 spokes (on his old/OEM set) and I just stole them from my replaced wheel. :D

Shimano hub the freehub comes off very easily. That one has a seal on the back of the freehub body. Remove it with a 10 mm allen key. Clean the outside well and pluck the seal. Lubricate the freehub body too. My favorite lube is mineral oil based automatic transmission fluid. I add a small amount of gease to thicken it a little and keep a bottle of it around. This why clean is essential ; fill the outer race twice and let it drain in. Now the pawls have fresh lube . Then take the grease gun and add grease to the outer race just a little to cover the bearings. Replace the seal and reinstall. The freehub will be a bit quieter and will be fine to the next overhaul. That slightly thick ATF ( thin is better than too thick) will stay in place and not interfere with the pawls. That extra grease at the end will lubricate the outer bearings and grease the seal. Any Shimano hub is of good enough quality that this is worth the 5 minutes. Working from the inside where the outside hub bearings where you can get some of this lube into the freehub just keep adding and rotating the freehub body until some clean lube comes out the outside bearing of the freehub.

Hi Andy. Another good video. My guess (and I'm not an expert) is thet the drive side dust cup is a bit warped and is slightly rubbing (grinding) on the cone. Sometimes it is enough for the lip to be a bit bent (from someone that tried to force it out) and it can just rub against the cone. I noticed that when you turned the axle from the non drive side and the freehub turned .

When people say the going rate for shop time is a ripoff, they're really saying they're never handled an organization's budget in their whole lives, and they sure haven't ever learned a trade and made a go of it as sole proprietor. Mechanics have bills to pay, just like everyone else. And every hour in the shop, either wrenching or waiting to wrench, is an hour not spent taking in revenue in some other line of work. So as a user of that service, if you want to have a mechanic in town for you to hire, you have to pay that opportunity cost as well as the overhead. And of course, if it's so easy, just diy. 😆

There had to be damage to either the cone or the race, are you sure you didn't lose a ball (saw one under your left hand at 8:47)? Were the old balls pitted? I like to leave the drive-side lock nut alone when servicing a hub to keep things centered, and magnets are your friend when retrieving ball bearings. I used to completely disassemble, still do if things are noisy, dry, dirty, and/or rusty, but in all other cases if a squirt of grease through loosened cones does the job, I'll do it.

People that don't think a bicycle mechanic is worth his rate, have never tried to actually overhaul not just any component on a bike, but do a overall tune-up. I just did a freehub, bottom bracket and rear derailleur replacement and tried to be cheap without using the required tools. Let's just say a month later, and half a dozen plus Amazon purchases later, I finally finished. I spent $350 easy on components (the wrong components), tools (the wrong tools) and grease. It would've been more cost and time effective to just drop the bike off at the local shop. But I figured, how much more difficult could a bike wheel be, than a hydraulic pump? Lord, I forgot so many pieces, the bearings kept falling out everywhere, I must've disassembled and reassembled it 6 or 7 times 🤣. I got so mad that I even sprung for a repair stand because I refused to be defeated by a push bike. Yes folks, if you really do value your bicycle, and you don't want to repair it yourself, whatever the mechanic charges is cheaper and justified.

There’s just no fixing some people, so you take the bad with the good. I happened to be one of those strange mech-heads that actually _liked_ people, though, so I gravitated towards teaching in the end. I’ve binged a lot of your content, and we agree on pretty much everything about bikes, rants, pricing and politics so far. The only difference is that I’m squarely in the Calvin Jones club of ’smarter, not harder’ when it comes to brakes - meaning I prefer hydraulic disc brakes over rim ones. 🙂 Hydraulics are pretty much unnecessary, _unbelievably_ overpriced and finicky on the road side of things (hoo boy!😬)… but the tried-and-true, MTB-side, flat-bar / hybrid components on the other hand? The humblest of the humble, Shimano mineral oil MT200 set of brakes - both back and front - will cost you a whopping 40 (!) bucks total with shipping, stop you reliably every single time, will not wear out your rims, and may easily outlast your bike. Set, forget and just ride. Can’t beat that in my opinion, but can always agree to disagree. 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼🙂 Different strokes for different folks. Keep on keeping on, may the algorithm gods bless you… and for the love of Pete, please don’t make your grandma’s dingleberry song a recurring theme. 🤪

Daamn sight less waste, takes energy to make these things. Even after the rim has had it the hub should last a good while longer if the races are looking healthy. Lacing a wheel can be pretty relaxing with a film on.

Maybe I’m wrong, but 9 speed Ultegra shifters are usually 2/3 speed compatible. If used with a 2 by FD, you have a trimming function for your 2 by crankset, if you have a 3 by FD, you can use a 3 by crankset. So the easiest way to make it work perfectly would be to replace the FD.

I just had a similar issue on an old bike I was customizing. I swapped out the free hub with a different free hub I had on hand and it resolved the issue. While it is no doubt cheaper to fix issues like this yourself, not everyone can or wants to, so I would say that 50 to 100 bucks would be reasonable for a shop to charge to diagnose and correctly fix an issue like this.

I love cup and cone hubs. I had a dura ace hubbed front wheel that I don't think I serviced ever, and rode it through all kinds of training miles year round for half a decade. I could spin that wheel up on the stand and it wouldn't stop for almost a couple minutes. It would just spin forever, which to me, meant that there was no friction. I don't think I've ever had a sealed bearing hubbed wheel spin for anywhere near that long.

Friction != wear though!
@CanonFirefly
@CanonFirefly Ай бұрын
Bearings that spin too freely often have poor weather sealing and not enough grease. Sealed bearings do have a little drag, because they are sealed. The seal creates a bit of friction but does a better job of keeping water and grime out and so the bearings go further between services. The half a watt of drag is worth it for most people.

If I was the costumer, I would do both: buy a new wheel and install it, so I don't need to stop riding the bike, but I would not discard the used one. I would ask you to work on it (no rush, I already have a rideable bike) and, when the problem is solved, I would have a spare wheel for 50 bucks. Having a spare wheel is always a good idea if you ride frequently.

Was a half hour fair? Well - My free hub was too free. It let me pedal in both directions with no wheel movement. So I took my rear hub apart last week. I have to say with all my various mistakes, it was way more time than a half hour. Failed free hubs are supposed to be very rare. I soaked mine in mineral oil overnight and then drenched it in chainsaw oil. Now it seems OK. Is it a good idea to spray penetrating oil on the free hub when you have it apart? I've heard this will purge the dried up gunk that may be on all those little pawls, springs and multiple tiny ball bearings. Seems like you are giving her good value on the job.

As a retired Mechanic of 46 years, I like to tell people you are paying for the know how its the same for Plumbers, Carpenters, HVAC techs you hire them because they have the knowledge and experience to do the job people don't know how to do, I think things like oil changes, replacing filters, swapping out batteries, etc is easy but I have the know how and experience to do those things that some people don't know how to do. I used to get I'm too expensive, people are perfectly free to go somewhere else.😀 I bought my bike two years ago and Im learning how to do all of the maintenance on it, it has not seen a shop since I bought it, that said if I needed something I don't know how to do I would have no problem taking it to the local bike shop I got two nice ones near me. I like that color combo on that bike.

I think it’s good the industry has shifted to “cartridge” bearings. It sucks when you have a perfectly good wheel, but the inner bearing races are worn. You can replace the balls and/or outer races, but there’s no way to get it perfect again. I guess the answer is preventative maintenance, regreasing and balls before the races wear, idk.
@ebikescrapper3925
@ebikescrapper3925 Ай бұрын
You can use a threaded rod, washers, bolts and rachet sockets instead of buying a bearing press as well. I agree that cartridge bearings are better, even Shimano has moved towards them in cues.

Love the practicality of your content man. Like yeah I got 10k to drop on upgrades 🙄 Keep it simple stupid, bring back enjoying the ride. Not chasing a fraction of a gram in weight reduction. I did buy a Walmart bike recently cause we don’t have decent used bikes here in Tulsa for a decent prices. People want retail plus for old worn out bikes here. Got the ozark trail gravel bike and it’s actually good enough for who it’s for. Might upgrade in the future but for now I’m off the couch and out riding with my kiddos so that a good enough upgrade for me. Cheers 🍻 man hope you all the success in whatever you choose to do.

When I've found loose lock nuts on the rear wheel, I've found the axle to be bent ever so slightly. Could that have been the case here? Is so, that nut will probably come loose again.

Okay- the first thing to check when you have a crunchy rear hub is to turn the pedals while it's crunching to determine if it's the axle bearings or the freehub bearings.

I can't remember if you said you grabbed new ¼ inch balls or not but if the hub races and cones really were undamaged and the balls were new, you might have had contamination in your hub when reinstalling. To me it sounded like dirt/sand grinding but I could definitely be wrong.

You only need to unlock one side of the axle, leave the other nut and lock nut in place, that why it is adjusted already. Assuming it was correct before being disassembled.

You said that it's not likely someone would bring you a job from considerable distance. I'd love to have you to service my bikes for me but you're about 3 hours away from me and from my experience with my local bike shops (70 miles round trip from my house as opposed to 6 hours) I'd really be upset with any re-works! I had new tires put on my Giant early this summer and had to take it back because one went flat in the garage two days later, I bought a new Specialized this summer and had to go back to the shop to pick up special order items for it, and my most recent purchase (an older Giant that was like new) I had to take back for re-work. I think you're smart to realize you're stuck with semi-locals in your little town.

Bike Farmer - Why no tubeless tires? Just curious as I'm taking my bike over to the local guy (who is just like you, btw!) to see about replacing my 3x7 Grip Shifts with thumbies. I was going to ask him about converting the 26' wheels to tubeless as well. I thought they were more puncture resistant - I'm in a desert town with a lot of thorns.....not worth it?

Andy, one more question on my mind is this. In some of your earlier videos, you are using a pair of trieye glasses, but now you use a mirror attached to glasses or a helmet. Wondering if you think the trieyes are worth the money or not. Short videos about that kind of stuff might be good too. Gizmos and gadgets that you think are good to have, bag recommendations for long rides, etc. Just an idea. 💡
