Hey Bob! I actually do this kind of stuff on my channel and wanted to give you some tips for the next time you do this. - Before painting, you should sand the blaster with around 220 grit and then clean it after (I use rubbing alcohol). This gives the paint a better surface to adhere to and can prevent some inconsistencies in the paint. - All body work should be done before painting- and you should do it in sections so you can still open up the blaster later for maintenance or modifying. Sanding it after having the internals put in can mess with the lubricant inside the plunger tube, or make the internal mechanisms stinky/crunchy. - You should look into clear coating (specifically before putting everything together) It will keep the blaster from having a sticky feel with some paints, and protect the paint if you drop it or hit it against something. Besides those, good first go

+zack wildman Hey Zack! Well, that's kind of a tough general video to make, even though a lot of people have asked about it. It's tough mainly because everyone has a different set of needs based on what they want to make. I've been considering doing another shop tour video, maybe I can cover some of that stuff in there. Thanks!
@thebrokenyolk9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bob. And btw, would you prefer a table saw over a circular saw?
@Iliketomakestuff9 жыл бұрын
zack wildman Hmm, well, again, it kind of depends on your needs, but... if you could only have one the circular saw is capable of everything that a table saw can do, it just takes a little more effort for some of it. It's more portable, and significantly cheaper. If that's the one you get, I would suggest getting some sort of straight edge guide that you can use to cut long straight cuts, like amzn.to/1VL9sTU Also, this is pretty handy, I've got one. amzn.to/1PZ3oDi

I just used Apoxy Sculpt for the first time this past weekend and it is great stuff to work with, really like working with it. For filling seams though, I use "Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty". I've never used anything that sands so easily! It's not good for big gaps, but that hasn't stopped me from building up layers to fill anything. Excellent wood filler too if you're going to paint your wood projects.
@Iliketomakestuff9 жыл бұрын
+Nick Vildis Cool! Yeah, Bondo has been mentioned several times. I've used it before, but not in this type of instance. Is the glazing and spot putty a two part? or just a one part in a tube?
@nasfat9 жыл бұрын
Just one part, right out of the tube. Cheap too, I picked up a tube for around $4-5 Canadian (at an auto parts store). Shop around because I've seen other stores sell it for $12+ for the same tube. bondo.com/bondo-glazing-spot-putty-907.html

1. It wouldn't work well because paint doesn't stick well to foam, 2. Toy firearms legally require an orange tip so stupid people know that it's a toy, you say people aren't stupid but regardless of that people are nervous freaks about guns and freak out if they think someone has a real firearm 3. Golden Nerf darts look more like , so if you have a grey Nerf Blaster and golden darts in it people will think it's a gun with bullets in it. 4. The noise a Nerf gun makes does not matter to people who aren't involved in a Nerf battle and can't hear the Nerf blaster noises. Think 20 times before posting a comment without knowing what you're talking about

Hey Bob...I'm very into the nerf gun modding and can recommend a few things for the future. One piece you can upgrade easily is 3 print a catch out of stronger plastic. you could also make a wooden or metal trigger..metal preferably. Also like you said there are many mods to make shoot harder/faster. If you're interested, u can buy stronger springs for specific guns...the best place is orange mod works..also look up AR (also or restrictor) removal. Really enjoyed the vid. Actually about to do some nerf gun painting myself. keep up the good work.
@svenmueller9 жыл бұрын
Regarding the epoxy sculpt being really heavy: what I've seen in various projects is a mixture of Styrofoam and a sculpting material (probably similar if not identical to what you used): Fill most of the volume with Styrofoam or similar materials, then use epoxy sculpt or similar to get a surface you can do more detailed sculpting with and that is easier to get a nice paintable surface with. Takes some planning so that the surface is strong enough and you don't have Styrofoam sticking out. But you can always cut away some foam if it protrudes too much.

Use JB Weld to merge parts together. If you are going to paint exterior parts that move, grease them with silicone grease and clearcoat everything.

Looks really cool nice work. One thing I always try to keep in mind when weathering stuff come from Adam Savage who says that weathering should tell a story. Real weathering is not uniform and all real dings and marks are there from being used. So try and image what someone using this gun would have done in order to mark it up. Maybe the trigger and guard are worn smooth from fingers, the front is likely scratched from going into a holster, the handle may be dinged from dropping it in the heat of battle, etc. Its tough to do because or human brains instinctively thinks of randomness as being way more uniform than it really is.

awesome stuff. I'm excited to see more prop projects. May have to steal a few of your methods to make my Mardi Gras costumes for this year!

Apoxie Sculpt is exactly what I would use. If I was going to be changing the shape of any object for a prop fairly drastically, I would use a Apoxie Sculpt. If I'm looking at smoothing contours or adding small shapes, Bondo body filler works really well.

+Alec Richter From the videos if seen, Bondo seems really cool ! but it does'nt exist in France ! : (

+Iron Man I think the Evercoat brand is more international, it is polyester auto body filler.

Perfect for what I'm about to do. Friend of mine gave me a bob gun for Christmas and it looks like an assault rifle, so I'm going to paint it to give it a more scifi look. I'm also thinking about adding some leather straps for a space cowboy feel.

Yoooo, if you tap into the cylinder and pop out the springs and air resistors on each of the spots for the darts you can make it shoot alot further
