In this video I run through how to repair a crack in a plastic bumper bar in a complete DIY Do It Yourself method.
All you need is a heat gun.

It's nice to see you using full PPE. Saves suffering the debilitating effects of demyelinating neurologic disorders later in life. And of course, it's nice to see superb craftsmanship. The years of hard work show.

another thing to use is a little iron welder for plastics. I didn't even think about trying this, thanks for the vid.

Stronger way to do it is with some large weave stainless mesh. Brace the bumper so the crack is closed, put a piece of mesh on top and go at it when a heat gun (soldering iron works too), then use a tool of some kind (metal roller works well) to push the mesh down in to the melting plastic. It acts like re-bar in concrete. After that you can melt some additional plastic on top to make it even stronger. Also, good tip about stealing some plastic from other areas of the bumper to use a filler. Cheeky as fuck, and free ;)

Has to be variable temperature or the right temperature for each kind of plastic you might work with.

Better way to do it is to use a 3m bumper epoxy, drill holes either side of the crack clean up with 80 grit paper then apply the epoxy push it into the crack and through the holes. Once it's set just body work as normal.
@marcusbedford5023
@marcusbedford5023 7 жыл бұрын
It seems to work really well until put under stress, if you use this method you run the risk of over heating the plastic and making it weak on a molecular level causing stress cracks and spider cracking. Where as the chemical epoxy only gets to 40degree Celsius so no distortion and no stress on surrounding plastic, also sets solid in 3 mins and sendable in 5 mins

Because it has now been weakened through a crack I would recommend that you back it up with a bit of sheet metal or plastic plate inside would only need to be 100x50 1.0 aluminum rough up the surfaces on both metal and plastic and glue it down with Sikaflex type 11fc , even if you do not plastic weld it this would be sufficient forever , you will never break it apart , all the trades use this particularly the sign industry for gluing sheet metal to frames , it has completely eliminated rivets and screws from the old days .

Have got some front bumper mods on the cards, have kept all the bits I've cut off for the filling part as those 3mm weld rods aren't going to be man enough.... ever notice how they disintegrate before the bumper is up to temperature lol

I once had a friend that was a boat builder. He lived in his somewhat dusty workshop with just a curtain to separate. Then again his girlfriend was a high cost hooker. He was quite proud of the fact he didn’t have to pay.

Personally I have always used a two part epoxy glue that penetrates the plastic to bond and then proceed to sand skim sand prime sand etc before paint. Never had one come apart either. Can't say the same for plastic welds though as they always split again on me. That said I was doing motorcycle plastics.

The irony that I'm looking this up to repair my 2011 STI's bumper... which split in exactly the same place. It's a lovely design, but it doesn't handle scraping very well.

Fiberglass on plastic? Not ideal. No plastic welding equipment at a body shop? Not good. Welding by just adding some plastic? Not optimal. Get some plastic welding kit bro. Nowadays you can buy those even at regular hardware stores. They even sell plastic-sticks (all sorts of plastics). Next time -> think of welding in a metall mesh. Will spread the load better.
