@Nutty1513 жыл бұрын
@@shadowledastray I had read the opposite, that in the beta with the DD Link had faster swings, the environments were larger, there were more npc's, more developed day/night cycle, among others. The cut Temple of Light was allegedly taken out because of the DD's failure. I think the later "Expansion Pack" was developed to bring back some of these features, hence why Majora's Mask is technically more advanced than OoT.
@shadowledastray3 жыл бұрын
@@Nutty151 I honestly assumed the same for over two decades, dreaming of what 64DD Zelda 64 could have been. But here is the actual quote: Iwata: ROM cartridges don’t have any moving mechanical parts, so they can read motion data in an instant, no matter where it’s stored. However, with a magnetic disk, it takes time for the mechanical parts to move around meaning you have loading time while it’s locating the data. As a result, we couldn’t get Link’s motions to work. If there hadn’t been as many motions, we could’ve gotten the game to read them to memory from the disk in advance, but we had around 500 motion patterns. Ozawa: That’s right. That’s the reason that Koizumi was saying “My Link won’t work on the 64DD,” at the time. Koizumi: Right. Consequently, when it was decided that OoT would be released on a ROM cartridge instead of the 64DD, there might’ve been a few people who were disappointed, but I think the happiest guy in the world was probably… me. *laughing* ^ It sounds like using the 64DD for the base game had some major downsides, so they created a standard cart with more storage capacity instead. I still hope we can uncover the Beta Castle Town someday though!

In regards to the theory that the Unicorn shrine giving the triforce: perhaps it was an area Young Link could access, but wouldn't be important to the story until returning as Adult Link, and would give one piece after completing specific dungeons? Or an area meant to represent the Sacred realm beyond just the chamber of the sages and Master Sword chamber.

That beta, untextured version of Hyrule Castle Town and the hi-res images of the pre-rendered Temple of Time/Castle Town area made my day! I actually really enjoyed the pre-rendered backgrounds in OoT, and I think it would be super cool to have a version of the Temple of Time with its interior given a similar treatment. I think it could have leant the temple a very cool vibe. I’ve noticed a lot of the earlier versions of areas in OoT tend to be so much larger than their final counterparts. I think I would have enjoyed Kokiri forest and the Lost Woods a lot more in their earlier forms. I wonder if these areas got smaller primarily because of the N64DD cancellation. I would imagine the N64 would have a much harder time loading these larger areas.
@TheObsessiveGamer4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I imagine the N64 couldn't handle those whatesoever which is why they were downscaled. That would be really cool! I also noticed in a lot of the cut dungeons and rooms, they're very similar to the ones in games like Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker and even Breath of the Wild

It seems like they were looking over all of their previous production design from the 2D Zelda games and just seeing what they could adapt in some way to a 3D space and left a ton of it in as is up until stage 4 of development where everything got revamped into styles that worked better with what the hardware could produce and the story started to come together. That's really what I find most interesting about it as Zelda I & II have always been my favorites. Look at that supposed test dungeon with the Stalfos that seems like it's mimicking Zelda 1, level 1... yeah, you could make that, but would it actually work in a 3D space with new mechanics or be any fun? This was absolutely a learning process for them as it rolled on.

Great video! Some other cool stuff I saw following all the Nintendo leak talk on twitter (MrCheeze's page I believe), is the spiritual stones originally lost their color when you became an adult. You had to beat the first 3 temples to restore them, and return to being a child again (right in time for next two dungeons including a child section). Also, Zeldas cutscene before Ganon Castle is where you originally got Light Medallion instead of Light Arrows (makes sense, considering Medallions original arrows/magic uses). This was found looking through older cut scene data.. Fascinating stuff.

Since I don't see anybody mentioning it, at 7:18 Saria says "I'm Saria of the Kokiri tribe, nice to meet you... Jara" ("Jara" apparently being the name the player gave to Link). It sounds like Saria is introducing herself to Link for the first time, which of course would be odd for what are suppossed to be long-time friends, so it seems like even at that late point in the development of the game the story was going to be different.
@TheObsessiveGamer3 жыл бұрын
He was Jara in Zelda 64 but Link in Ocarina of Time xP but I wouldn't take what Saria said at face value here regarding story. I imagine it might have been just a place holder text at that point or maybe the developers simply had it that somehow Link and her never met in such a small village
@inendlesspain47243 жыл бұрын
@@TheObsessiveGamer It could be that, though my hypothesis is that at that point in development the Kokiri were this tribe of forest kids who were all dressed up similarly to Link but there was no real connection between him and the tribe; as silly as it sounds, it's more likely than Link and Saria never ever meeting despite living in the exact same little village, plus none of the prior games actually gave an explaination as to why Link was dressed up the way he was while most npcs wore more generic clothes, so the Kokiri could've started off as just a silly idea for a new location that later got further development. I also think that it could've been that Link being dressed up similarly would let him "infiltrate" the Kokiri Forest as no one from outside was allowed in (if that plot point is also true at that point in development).

One of them probably was used to upgrade your arrows to silver arrows by doing shooting galleries. The shooting galleries was not like the new one definitely. I think the shooting gallery lets you shoot the targets found on the other side which is known as moving paper things that includes slimes and such. The other mini games could be and it wasnt in the final verson: fire and ice mini game where you have to douse the fire and melt the ice this could be done to upgrade the fire/ice rods if they made it. Now the other buildings could be: that one of them may be links house. And he would able to customize it with the stuff he collected. Like new furniture and storage for equipments and such. If the storage was possible, link would have limited inventory. He would have let go of some of the items or materials. Now the other buildings are just residential. And one of them may have a mayor. Now beside the massive castle town, if theirs a large number of npcs, link could of help people in town and that would help develop the town or something.

It's very interesting to see beta lost woods here. I was confused on where the opening of Majora's mask was in Hyrule because those woods look nothing like the lost woods but when looking at this version it becomes very clear, if you applied the same textures from mm to here it would be 1-1

Unicorn Fountain theory: In the final game, you could play Zelda's Lullaby at Gossip Stones to release a fairy. Perhaps thats why the "Unicorn Fountain" had the Triforce symbol, to get players to play a song at the Unicorn statue to release a fairy? (Basically an alternate idea they had for Fairy Fountains)
@eljosafatespinoso30873 жыл бұрын
My theory is that the three unicorns was something that later was replaced by the regular giant naked crazy fairy lady divided in 3 different places for giving you the 3 special magic crystal items. Before that change I believe you would have access to the unicorn shrine easily, but you'd have to do advances in game before getting a crystal from each of theme. You would get the green one after having the esmerald stone; fire after having the Dodongo stone; and blue after lord jabu jabu). The only role of the big naked fairy by this phace of game was just giving you magic, upgrading the magic bar, healing or upgrading the bombs bag.

I would agree...except we do also have a model of a beta Great Fairy from the same stage of development. So I do think this was a special case here. Nintendo sure was pointing out on their site as to how special the statues were.

@@TheObsessiveGamer I also don't entirely believe myself tbh xD But I think the chances of that having being so is high. Btw, as long as it's about this topic I often see people theorizing the entrance to the unicorns fountain was underwater in Zora's Domain. My guess is that it just was the previous entrance to the Zora's shop, which later they moved to where it actually is in the oficial version, and left the old entrance useless underwater. Any guess of your own regarding that little square hole there?

I have to wonder if Gannon's Beta castle was, in some way, a divergent evolution of an early form of Peach's Castle from Super Mario 64's castle. We know for a fact that when they were both in development, the Zelda and Mario development teams were sharing assets and ideas; Wet Dry World uses a lot of early Hyrule Castle Town assets, and the entire idea of a castle hub came from OOT's early planning... Maybe, just maybe, they re-purposed an early castle layout from M64, and slowly modified it into Gannon's Castle. Just a crackpot idea, but maybe that glowy room could've been a concept for HMC's painting room, since both are small rooms with a large hole in the middle. i'm probably wrong, but it's fun to theorize

@Icebound Snowman As much as I want a proper HD remaster of the 3DS version, if they did release such a game on Switch I really hope it also includes a remaster of the N64 version as well. As you mentioned, the atmosphere feels very different. Even a simple touch up like they did with Mario 64 on 3D All-Stars would make me happy.. smoothing out the pixelated 2D assets. That would benefit Ocarina of Time (even more than Mario 64) because it has so many static 2D backgrounds that are horribly pixelated when viewed on anything after the N64 console. But I digress.. I do prefer the N64 graphics overall for it's atmosphere.

If I had to guess, since the original build didn't feature the c-buttons in the hud and we've been told that Zelda 64 ran on a modified Mario 64 engine, I'd say the C-buttons were probably used to move the camera originally, just like in Mario 64. This might have been important for exploring these early areas and might also explain why so many areas had to be redesigned so that the camera would work better for players who might not think to use the z-button to center the camera behind them in the later builds.
@TheObsessiveGamer3 жыл бұрын
That would be my guess too. As much as I wish I had a free camera in that game, the c-buttons definitely got better use here. I do think the redesign was more because the regular N64 couldn't handle such huge areas unlike the 64DD
@aurafox13 жыл бұрын
@@TheObsessiveGamer Many of the early maps definitely couldn't have been handled on the N64. But some of the later ones definitely could. That's why I think the camera was also an influencing factor.

I have a theory: The skulltula Dungeons were meant to be in Ocarina of Time as a reward for destroying all 100 skulltulas. This idea was nixed after Miyamoto and pulled his team pulled the plug on OoT, feeling that they had spent too much time on the project. They were going to featured Ura Zelda . However, Aonuma had little to no interetest on working on the latter . He was reassigned to the Zelda the Gaiden project. In order to help him meet the deadline, he was was sent extra features that they had completed and meant for Ura Zelda the Blade Beam and the Skulltullas Houses.

The sword beam is a theory, but more a wishful one since there is no proof for that. But as for ti being an early generic fairy fountain is a possibility since it was one of the earliest instances of a fairy fountain we had at that point and the fairy found from the Overdump is similar to it too.
@WinVisten3 жыл бұрын
@@TheObsessiveGamer Agreed, it's likely just a fancy generic Fairy Fountain.. Although it COULD also be the Great Fairy Fountain too. I really want to make a papercraft of it, but since a 3D model of it hasn't leaked, I'd probably have to make it from scratch.

My guess is that the Unicorn Fountain is the Sacred Realm, and that we might have actually seen it and the Triforce at one point before Ganondorf would come in to steal it. The whole segment was cut down, and what we ended up with was just the screen going white and Ganondorf butting right in. The segment _is_ a little underdeveloped, when you think about it. So maybe the Fountain "is" there in the Sacred Realm, but unlike Blade Runner, we don't get to see the Unicorns in the Final Cut
@TheObsessiveGamer3 жыл бұрын
I personally think Unicorn Fountain may either have been an earlier fountain design overall or a unique one that gave us a special move. Many have made wild theorizes on it like having the triforce, but aside from it having the trifroce symbol on it (which is all over the game already), I don't see anything that may point to it being that special that it was in the sacred realm.

As many have theorized, the beta castle town (once filled with NPCs) was probably too much for the N64.. But interestingly, I get the impression that having the large castle town walls in the center of beta Hyrule field was to help with streaming the overworld map. Instead of having a huge open space like in the final game's field, Link would have to walk around those central castle walls, allowing the game to load new sections of the map as he circled the structure. The walls would keep this process hidden from the player's view, like a clever loading tunnel. This way they wouldn't have to display an entire overworld at once. (The castle walls and entrances can be seen in early screenshots of both the lost woods and the desert.. So, perhaps it was like Majoras Mask, with a different region on each side?)
@TheObsessiveGamer4 жыл бұрын
A Majora's Mask like overworld would have made more sense with this if we do assume the beta castle town was in the centre of hyrule field and the evidence does point to that now well too considering how that contrasted screenshot of the lost woods even shows a side of the beta Hyrule castle too point right next to it. Makes one realize Twilight Princess which was stated to have take some beta OOT content also took this concept too as Hyrule Castle was in the centre of the overworld
