• Growing up as a Mormon...
ABOUT US:
Mormon Stories Podcast is the longest-running and most successful podcast in Mormonism - hosted by Dr. John Dehlin. At Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We also occasionally interview scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. Our overall mission is to: 1) Facilitate informed consent amongst LDS Church members, investigators, and non-members regarding Mormon history, doctrine, and theology, 2) Support Mormons (and members of other high-demand religions) who are experiencing a religious faith crisis, and 3) Promote healing, growth and community for those who choose to leave the LDS Church or other high demand religions.
Mormon Stories Podcast is a product of the Open Stories Foundation - a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to supporting Mormons in religious transition.

My wife is a youth chaplain at a church. One of the teens in the youth group came out to parents as gay. The good Christian evangelical parents decided the appropriate response was to kick the child out and put them on the street. They completely disowned the kid. After the teen spent a couple days in a shelter my wife intervened and got temporary custody from the parents so the youth could come live with us. We have now been the unofficial foster parents for this youth for 2 years. Yes, there is sometimes the typical teen angst and drama (school issues, breakups, makeups, etc.) but for the most part this is a good kid. We've been very happy to provide a stable home for this teen. Soon they will turn 18 and move on to the next chapter of their life whether that be college or whatever. Life is strange sometimes and things happen that you never anticipated.

I think that this was more of the parents point of view. In the church we are taught to love everyone, no matter who they are or who they love. We do not preach being part of the LGBTQ community, but we are taught to love the individuals. One quote that I like to think of is "love the sinner not the sin" No matter how you present yourself or who you love, I would ALWAYS support and love you. As for the temple recommend question is says something along the lines of: do you support any organizations or groups that teach topics counter to the gospel (that's not the exact wording but its the general idea). I think that in the parents case they saw the fact that she was dating a girl and got nervous. They could have sat down with her and talked about her feelings and such. Once she explained it to them they could caution her that that was not what they felt was right, but they could have continued to love and accept her. Not all members of the Church of Jesus Christ would act that way. We all are humans and we make mistakes. Please keep that in mind as we all try to be our best, and love everyone.

I had a beautiful 17 year old daughter who let me know very early on that she was gay. Before she let me know I loved her unconditionally and was very proud of her. After she told me things changed. Knowing your kids trust you enough to come and talk to you about the toughest things is the ultimate reward as a parent. I remember when my 16 year old told me she thought she might be bisexual. I still get emotional thinking about just how nonchalant the conversation was. We might as well have been talking about apples. It was just normal. Makes me feel even worse for those in the LGBTQ community who are terrified to come out to the people that are suppose to love them unconditionally. My daughter has always known that I've got her back and no matter what she knows I'm gonna be her biggest fan, her proudest supporter and her loudest cheerleader. I'll never understand a parent that can turn their back on their child. Glad your daughter has a great mom that has her back.💜💜

From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” Here Jesus let’s us know that we are to love Him and His Word above ALL else….Forsaking the relationships within family, if that is what it comes to…Likewise, Apostle Paul clearly tells us that from the willfully disobedient we are to turn away and have nothing to do with them, as they chose to live and remain in their willful sin. Harsh? No, we are to be separate and apart from those who live in overt and unrepentant disobedience, willful and arrogant sin against God (2 Timothy 3:1-5). What happened to - do unto others as you would have them do unto you? What happened to - loving thy neighbour? For a parent to treat their own child in this way is shameful behaviour. But the best thing that you can do is to live your best life. If they were trying to manipulate you by doing this, that makes it so much worse. Jesus’ own words tell us otherwise: (Luke 12:51-53” Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but division. Jesus is to be our First Love, above ALL others and ALL things (Revelation 2:4-5).

Parents are legally responsible until you’re 18… if you are of age and you want to live a life they don’t agree with, then unfortunately , yes , you have to find a way to live that life independently

All due respect but this happens in many families when parents do not support their children's lifestyle choices...not just Mormons and not just LGBT etc.

For a church so obsessed with family, it sure does break a lot of them apart.

My Mormon dad financially supported my gay sister until the day he died (when she was nearly 50 years old) and gave her a double inheritance because he feared she wouldn’t be able to support herself. The point is, the church does not teach or condone parents not showing charity to their children, this woman’s parents must be confused.

We are told in 2 Timothy 3:1-5, from such, stay away. We are to love them, but we hate the sin and are to have no interaction with those living in willful disobedience to God and His Word.
