Great video, but it feels like two questions are left answered: Are all current mouse manufacturers equal when it comes to wireless tech? And the interference mentioned, how common is it? Does sitting right next to a WiFi antenna do anything, or maybe even having your phone close?
@AnimeReference
@AnimeReference 3 жыл бұрын
I've completely lost Bluetooth when sitting 15m from a microwave, and I found Logitech's wireless keyboards to miss input for about 1 min at a time every 10 mins or so 10m from a router. So very common.
@Cimlite
@Cimlite 3 жыл бұрын
@@AnimeReference Is that keyboard using Lightspeed or Bluetooth though? I know that BT is easily broken, even being near a 2.4 ghz WiFi antenna can make it drop out. Would hope newer stuff like Lightspeed doesn't though.

Interference is quite common. Even USB 3 ports on devices are known to cause interference problems when BT adapters or proprietary 2.4 GHz recievers for mice and keyboards are plugged into them (Google it). Interference can manifest as reduced range, signal/input dropouts, and significantly reduced bandwidth which can cause inconsistent input delay. Wireless is especially bad at the moment for audio devices, especially BT speakers/headphones that add an average of around 200ms to the audio signal using standard BT.

you can see detailed reports of the latency differences in most modern controllers, including xbox ones, from porkchop express' MiSTer latency charts. they are all done with 1000hz polling enabled, but this is something you should be able to do on PC as well. its on rpubs dot com, search for that and "misteraddons latency"

They are 125hz so about 8ms? Plugged in is probably the same actually since it's 125hz as well, maybe 1ms lower. Unsure about the latest Xbox Controllers but the PS5 one is 1000hz, so 1ms.

For anyone wanting to test at home the sensor's impact on total system latency, something simple I did to test mouse sensor latency is this: I put the mouse on its back and put a tiny piece of paper on its sensor and then shot a quick blast or air at the paper. A 240fps camera (Samsung Galaxy S7 slow-mo mode) showed 0 frames between the paper resting and 'gone', and recorded in the same shot was my monitor in the game I was testing for. Hardest part is putting the footage in a video editor to go frame by frame and count the number of frames between paper movement and the beginning of the transition from one monitor picture to the next (this was on a 60Hz screen, at 144Hz it's much easier) The lower the refresh rate of the monitor, the larger the discrepancy between samples, so generally to get true-ish latency of the hardware itself you'll look at the lowest result, but for total system latency (game rendering etc) this isn't really accurate because there can be many factors affecting the delay of the output of a frame (especially in the Source engine, yeeks). Plus, a 240fps camera isn't that much, but it should at least give you more than a general idea.

i switched over from wired to wireless mouse about 6 months ago. the wire always had a pull and it made it really hard to be accurate. plus i had to move everything behind the mouse so the cable doesn’t get stuck. plus it was an extra wire in my setup. i decided to buy the same mouse but wireless and give it a chance... and my opinion is i love it. i love the wireless mouse but there is some flaws. just like you said any device can lose signal and maybe it’s just mine but i do lose signal at least once or twice a week. for a couple seconds only. overall i don’t feel like the input lag is bad as i still do just as good as i used to. but sometimes it does just feel off for me. anyways i recommend trying it out for yourself. i would say yes

You can test the interference performance by using the mouse on top of a running microwave. The stray microwave radiation escaping the microwave tends to slightly mess with 2.4 GHz connections. When I use my wireless headset near it running, I do hear static noise.

Yes, its 0,5 -1ms difference for wired vs wireless. Bluetooh is for powersaving. I thought u made a similar video showing these results with exception of bluetooth? Anyway. My DPI is 1800 and 1 in game for years but I also test differend combinations. Im wondering if there is a difference when only changing the DPI and keep 0 or 1 in game vs raising the ingame sensitivity, since in many games ingame sensitivity is a multiplayer of the DPI? I would love to see a video or at least an answer to that question. (When ingame sens is 0 some games drastically lower the mouse sensitivity and you can go higher than 2000-2500 DPI).

This is NOT mouse delay, this is MOUSE + SYSTEM delay. And while there is nothing wrong with this measurement as drivers can actually affect performance significantly (but so are USB ports and motherboard, watch Rocket Science's latest gamepad testing video) and you WANT to have this metric on the same system as baseline -- it is IMPORTANT to note that this is total delay, not dry mice delay. It would be nice if you could upgrade your setup, get Arduino for example, and add dry mice delay to your testing so you can test different mice in vacuum and find out its own base delay as well. This way you can compare different mice for performance, I bet that controller on this mice that switches between modes also incurs some penalty to perf.
