Little details I love about this perfect scene: -How Curt somehow manages to make the words, "Sounds boring," sound super emotional. -How Owen subtly starts to lower his gun when Curt talks about their past together, but then you can see the moment he remembers Curt leaving him and he raises it again. -The way Owen says, "What are you doing?"
@aoife89775 жыл бұрын
If I can add? Curt's line "after all those years" really makes it sound like he's thinking back on all the heartache and grief he felt after Owen died, just kinda reinforces that level of disbelief and joy that kinda just seems to be replaced by anger by the end. God it's just so good and I just can't.
@James-hr3yh4 жыл бұрын

I swear the Curt/Owen scene means as much to me now as it did when I first watched it, it's just as wonderful and unexpected, especially for the genre and time period. The first time I saw it I physically screamed and it still spikes my heart rate. Thank you so much Tin Can Bros for this. I adore the way the relationship reveal was handled, not as a cheap joke or as something shocking, but as something that enriches the character and motivations. It may seem like a small thing for this musical to have, but it's so rarely done, and then done well. If you want to make a sequel I'm already throwing all my money at it.

Wow. I didn't think Curt would actually do it. I love that he did, though, because it was unexpected and really shows his character development. It would have been so easy to just have a "you wouldn't kill me" "you're right I wouldn't" moment, but this means so much more. It means that he's no longer tied to the past. Not only is he no longer hung up on Owen, but he's no longer hung up on the spy he used to be. That was the main thing holding him back throughout the show, and this is where he decides to move on. He's finally letting himself move on and become a better spy than he ever was. What a twist. I love it.
@meraarts81365 жыл бұрын
Okay, so I see where you’re coming from, but I see it as the opposite. The old Curt was a pretentious prick that didn’t care for life. For example, the old Curt would have killed the bomb merchant, because criminal is criminal right? But the new Curt let him go, because he sees that the merchant wasn’t completely evil. By seeing Owen die, he learned what even impact death can have and that the people that were killed in the explosion of the first seen, were people with families. They mattered. It would be more character development if he had locked him up for life instead.

@@meraarts8136 I don't think the jail ending would work for Owen, because 1. He'll probably escape easily because of his skills and 2. There's no hope for him. Curt tried. He tried to convince Owen to give up on Chimera but he lashed out. This moment made Curt realize that Owen is not the same man anymore. Sergio just sold bombs for his family, but Owen killed many people since his fake death. And he started to like doing it, with no remorse. He became a psychopath that's hell bent on revenge. So there's really no choice, and this is the better ending.

You know the acting character exercise where you decide something the character wants but never articulates? Owen wants curt to join him. He tells him everything. All the details, what the future is because he wants him to come with him. And he’s heartbroken that curt doesn’t choose him.
@KTr0ck2 жыл бұрын
i strongly agree. as much as owen hates curt, why else would he bother trying so hard to convince him? why use words at all if his only goal was really just revenge? and why didn't he disarm curt when he was being targeted at point blank range, something we know he's capable of, unless it's because he was struck by the futility of it all (oh curt mega, you're going to be the death of me)? or maybe he was testing curt one final time, hoping curt would have a change of heart at the last moment or chicken out like he did before
@soontobedeleted9424 жыл бұрын
So, yeah, this is sad but when you think about the implications it's even sadder. The story was set between the 1950's, during the lavender scare. If someone found out about Curt and Owen's relationship they could've gotten fired, neglected, murdered, etc. When Curt says, "Some secrets aren't yours to share", he's probably refering to the thousands of citizens whose lifes could've been ruined by Owen's vigilance system, or maybe even to the two of them. Owen and Curt's relationship was secret for a reason. Conclusion: I'm not sure if this makes sense but when you're a history nerd and watch musicals set in the past you are risking your sanity by connecting the dots between the time parallels.

Two things about the stair scene that I love 1. Look at the way they are positioned. Curt is metaphorically and literally looking up to Owen. Judging by their first scene together, it severely implied that Owen complements Curt in being a spy. Every crack in Curt’s skill is filled by Owen. If everyone looks up to Curt, Curt looks up to Owen, even now. By contrast, Owen is metaphorically and literally looking down at Curt. He thinks he’s above everyone, including the man he once loved. 2. The lighting. Curt’s lighting shines on his face, looking up, and his face is clearly seen. In contrast to Owen, who is looking down, his face shadowed and partly obscured by smoke. I think Owen’s lighting probably meant that he is not the same person Curt looked up to, like he is now this dark person. I am probably overthinking this but the stair scene has been stuck in my head for far too long and I need to let some feels out.

I could go on a full positive rant about how good this scene is. It's... just so god damn phenomenal. Like, the smoke obscuring Owen's face? Owen has changed since the beginning, he isn't the same person that he was at the start. Our vision of him, as well as Curt's, is obscured because Curt literally has no idea who he is anymore. The Owen he had known died. (so in a way you can also interpret it as seeing Owen's ghost) And Joey and Curt's acting! Holy shit! They did such a good job in this. They deserve tonys just for this scene

I know I’m 3 years late to this comment but I just want to add the positioning and the lighting of this scene. Curt is looking up to him and his face is clearly seen. It’s like an allegory of how he’s finally seeing things with a clear head. It’s also a clever way of showing how he “looked up” to Owen. If everyone looked up to the famous spy Curt Mega, Curt Mega looked up to Owen. Every crack in his skills was complemented by Owen In contrast, Owen is looking down at him. Because of Chimera, he believes he’s above everyone, including the man he once loved. His face is obscured by smoke and the shadow, like Curt doesn’t recognized him anymore.

THE MAN DIDNT WANNA DIE BUT HE WAS TOO PRIDEFUL TO OUTRIGHT BEG he was DISARMED and making ABSOLUTELY NO MOVE to retaliate or escape despite being skilled enough to have killed 1153 people as easily as breathing sorry ive probably harped on about this scene like 5 other times just in this comment section alone but it just.... kills. me. absolutely devastates me. how much tragedy there is to examine in a single scene, that then spreads through all the other scenes like fractures in glass owen didnt wanna die so hard that he survived falling down a stair shaft or whatever the hell he fell off of- we dont even KNOW how. luck. sheer willpower. hate-eating curt's banana peel for energy i dont fucken know. he doesnt wanna die so hard that he tries to break curt's spirit/desire to fight back with scorching insults, everything he's wanted to say to curt pent up for four years and then weaponized. he doesnt wanna die so hard that (even though he's proved himself the more capable one) after one emotional exchange he slips up (AGAIN) and loses the upper hand and immediately tries to reason his way out of it even though he has more effective methods of regaining his power here AS WEVE ALREADY ESTABLISHED its like..... its not trust that he has in curt at this point, i think thats easy to say. he doesnt TRUST curt not to shoot him, but. does he EXPECT curt not to shoot him?? does he HOPE that curt wont shoot him??? this fucking scene haunts me its so beautiful but its also so............... *much*

Oh Jesus why did you have to point out how many people Owen has killed?? Surely he could have killed curt so easily, even without his gun and yet....
@radxianixe5 жыл бұрын
@@birdbird8364 i seriously think he hasn't moved on either. the pain in his voice at that last scene?? curt and joey made my heart break there. you're right, he could've killed curt easily, especially when curt was vulnerable. he killed the informant with no problem whatsoever. no hesitation, no nothing. just shot him with an exact aim. and yet, he stalled for such a long time with curt. the main comment's probably right, that he wanted to let out all the pent up anger he had and what he's wanted to say for four years. the subtext in everything makes this so beautiful, but also so heartbreaking. T^T

I’m sorry, your comment is just too funny with the line “hate-eating Curt’s banana peel for energy”. But you’re right. IDK how Joey manage to make this scene more tragic than it already is, but you put it into words

My theory is, Owen expected Curt to be a massive emotional wreck so gambled on him not being able to kill him. But because of Tati and the others he now no longed needed to be sad over Owen. And @M C, I think Owen enjoys messing with Curt he enjoys pretending to be someone else to get revenge, otherwise he would've just shot Curt in the torture tango scene
@josh___something Жыл бұрын
@@radxianixe I think I agree with some of the other folks here, as much as Owen is saying to get over it, he clearly hasn't. Torturing Mega instead of just killing him; laying it on *_THICK_* with the whole reveal in the scene prior, toying with Curt and goading him to make a choice: Saving the world... or him; and him basically telling Curt the whole plan with the whole surveillance network where I honestly thought Owen's whole "A world without spies..." was gonna end with Owen asking Curt to join him.

Honestly I discovered this show yesterday, and have already watched the whole thing twice, plus this scene a third time just now. It is honestly already become a favourite of mine. I have in fact never seen a relationship like this been done so well before, it is blatant, but yet so clearly there when you really watch the show. I have become quite good at reading subtext through time and already in the first scene I thought it seemed as though there was something more, but I never in the world thought that would actually happen, it rarely ever does. So I just sort of pushed it away and put it in the back of my mind. I thought for the longest time it wouldn't happen and that it would all end cliche, with Curt ending up with Tatiana. It wasn't until "I guess we're doing this" that I truly started believing that what I thought I saw in the beginning was actually there, and my heart honestly skipped a beat in that moment because it meant so much to me. I have never seen this done in any way like this before and it's honestly so beautifully and well written. The whole confession is itself is so outside of what's typical and I am so glad this exists because it shows how an original story should really be done.

Ok, so I don't know of anyone has pointed these things out before but here I go. In "Spies Are Forever" the lyrics are "Once a spy, always a spy, forever, forever." Owen dies, but he doesn't actually die. Because, "spies never die, spies are forever." However, in Curt and Owens final scene, Owen sings, "Once a spy, always a spy, forever...whatever." (btw an underrated moment and one of the best lyrics in the Starkid/TCB history) The "whatever" is really important. Owens not really a spy anymore, he doesn't have an agency, and at the end of the scene he dies for good, he's no longer "forever". He doesn't really care anymore. And another thing. "The warmest hello, to the coldest goodbye". In the first part of act one, when we first meet Curt and Owen, the lighting has more of a warm feel to it, "the warmest hello". They are meeting again as friends and (as we learn) lovers. In this final scene, the lighting is very cold feeling as it is "the coldest goodbye", and they end as enemies and ex-lovers. Just something I noticed. Basically every lyric of "Spies Are Forever" has a foreshadowing factor, which is why it is one of the greatest opening songs I have ever heard.

This just punched me right in the gut. The raw honesty in the scene between Owen and Curt is just heartbreaking to watch. No need for comedy, just intensity that you cannot get anywhere better than the theatre and it's an incredible thing that it's translated to KZbin as that doesn't always happen (speaking as a theatremaker who has put stuff onto video and seen it back). TCB have really outshone themselves here, a climax to a show that has gone from strength to strength since the first part. And the first scene was incredible to start off with.

I love how Curt is handled in this musical, even though it’s never directly said (which is realistic for the time period) that he had feelings for Owen. Lines like “You know you broke my heart” really make sense considering how long Curt grieved and had a 4 year retirement.

2:04 the choreography.... having them clash, pressing against each other, faces close, right on the "vu" in "deja vu", since when you say "vu" your lips naturally make a kissing motion, making it look almost like they're about to kiss, and of course they're having deja vu about that because *they've kissed before*, which is about to be confirmed in the following (devastating) scene. this is what elevates this show from great to impeccable.

I will always appreciate how curt and owen play into certain romantic tropes and are in many ways treated like any straight couple yet at the same time they aren't immune to the realities of gay men in the 50s and 60s and the show recognizes that along with the circumstances of the story (being spies and all)

the fucking care and attention put into this scene is beautiful. and no im not talking about the office-chair motorcycles, i'm talking about the slowly curling smoke turning Owen into a literal ghost, the lighting keeping owen in the dark and curt in the light, about how owen has the literal (on the stairs) high ground, about the subtle shift of power between the two from the second 'what about our secret' leaves curts lips. Before that, joey keeps his eyes calculating and cold, but as soon as he says that, you can see a slight drop in the facade. Owen hasn't shown any real emotion up until this point besides anger/frustration, but when curt mentions their relationship, you can see the uncertainty, you hear the waver in his voice at his next line. And when Curt shoots the gun out of his hands, Owen is shaking, basically asks curt not to kill him, but when kills him, he steps up to the stair just below him, and now his face is as certain as Owen's was because he's finally won.

oh my god, so at 7:18 Owen laughs after singing “Spies never die” which could be for multiple reasons but here are some random ones for you and just some thoughts about it: 1. He knows that Curt followed this as well as many other spies, so when Owen “died” it broke Curt and caused him pain. But then Owen came back, so truly spies never die... Then again, he’s holding Curt at gunpoint so he could also be laughing at the fact that he’s about to kill a spy, proving the saying false. 2. At this point... is Owen even a spy? He’s working for Chimera but he even says to Curt that once Chimera have achieved their goal, there will be no agencies or spies. We can most likely assume though, that Chimera would remain to control silently from the shadows. This highlights how Owen is no longer a spy so the phrase “spies never die” no longer applies to him. Now this is seriously digging deep, so if you’ve given up at this point then fair enough loves. 3. At 7:55 (around 7:35 for Curt’s bit), Owen’s voice trembles when he says that his and Curt’s secret “died the night [Curt] left [him] for dead”. Yes, this shows how hurt Owen was by the event (as he would be!) but it also reveals that he’s not gotten over it and that he can’t bring himself to kill Curt. Just think, Owen had plenty of times during their conversation here to end it whenever; but he never does. Instead he keeps talking, and yes he does like having the final word and often having a quip here and there, but he said plenty with Curt. For example “You’re a caveman, and I’ve discovered fire.” We saw earlier how he shot Susan straight after telling Tatiana that Curt’s partners don’t last long, but here Owen just doesn’t do anything. So the obvious thing here is “Owen still has some deep, hidden feelings for Curt still”. But consider this; Owen understands that he’s gone out of control and dealt with power too great to control. This is seen when he has an outburst when Curt says he’ll stop the machine, telling Curt that he just doesn’t get it. Owen understands that Chimera is huge, but his aim here is to show Curt how he is better than him, that he is (or rather, was) the better spy. (But now Owen is in way over his head, he really should’ve been an actor instead.) So when his voice trembles talking about their secret, it’s almost as if Owen is realising that everything he did in the 4 years he was “dead” was just because of that one secret dying. So Owen realises that he isn’t the spy he thought he was, which means that his laugh at 7:18 was one of relief and realisation that he’s free to die. He doesn’t have an obligation for any country, and as I said earlier Chimera aren’t really an agency (I mean I’m not 100% so if I’m wrong then that’s a-okay!) thus he doesn’t have to worry about never dying for the saying. Also (last point I swear), he never really finishes saying “spies are forever”. He proved this wrong. Spies aren’t forever. He certainly wasn’t. So maybe his laugh was aimed more at “spies are forever”... Which means I wasted time with this but hey, it’s just a theory x

ok but something has always stood out to me in the way that joey says "a world without *secrets*". all the examples he gave before, agencies, spies, etc., he seemed to be emphasizing them just for power. then the way he said "secrets", he added an extra accent on the word and his voice sort of breaks. just an idea, but what if curt interpreted that sentence wrong. i know owen hated curt by this moment, so what if he was saying he wanted the new world to be more open, so at least he didn't have to hide and pretend. He didn't want to keep his own self a secret. I dunno it's 12:24 am but just a thought

Istg this is the best penultimate 20 minutes of an action movie that I've ever seen. And it's and eight minute long song in a musical, so that's really saying something. The props were kinda ingenious, the music was incredible, the pacing was perfect, the montage is so well-executed that you can fill in all the blanks in the progression of the fight, and the ending was just *chef's kiss*. I know this isn't technically Starkid, but as seen in Twisted, TGWDLM and BF, these people are comedic geniuses. But when they go serious, it's heart-wrenching. We need a sequel. (Or prequel, that works too).

This scene actually made me cry. This was my second time watching this, the first time being when it first came out over 2 years ago. I had completely forgotten the majority of the plot, especially their relationship. The first time I watched this I really didn't care-- but since then, I've realized both my love for emotional scenes, as well as the fact that I myself am gay. The reveal of their relationship (even though the homoerotic subtext was pretty obvious throughout), only for it to end so heartbreakingly for the couple... this is one of my favorite scenes in musical history
