So sweet. Thank you for educating us. Bats tend to be feared and some people may try to harm or kill them because they don’t understand how delicate these creatures actually are. You’re an Angel for your tender care of them 💕🦇

I was amazed at how caring bat mothers are. How they use their wings to shelter the babies from cold and rain by swaddling them, or flap their wings to cool the little one off. You pet and caress these babies while explaining that this is what mama would do and I think. "What a beautiful creature of God "!

Hi Steve, this is a bat rescue channel - the hand raised orphans are loving and funny and naughty and very social, and think the human is their mother. Welcome to Megabattie. I put information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care. There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions. If you want to find further videos of a particular bat, just search in the YT search bar for Megabattie/name of bat.

In Sydney you have to belong to a wildlife organisation and do a basic rescue course. Then you have to do a specialist bat course (they're both weekend courses). Then you have to be vaccinated for rabies. Then you have to be around during baby season (October to December). You're probably better off volunteering at Tolga Bat Hospital. Have a look at their website. There's accommodation and their baby season is rather full on. WHen I left there last year, there were 200 or so babies in care.

Yes - Dusty had electrocution burns to her wing. I was in 2 minds whether or not to euthanase her when they occurred, having so many other bubs to care for - but I decided to put in the time with her. I nearly euthed her twice more when the whole thing went to crap. But every dressing it didn't look worse, and you wouldn't believe how good it looks now. If I can just hold together the trailing edge she'll be releasable. Contact me for details & pix offline: magpie@comcen.com.au

Pardon my ignorance: I thought bats were completely nocturnal, yet there they are enjoying some sun rays, wow!!
@Megabattie6 жыл бұрын
Flying-foxes are nocturnal in that they forage for fruit blossom and pollen at night. They have large eyes and navigate by sight. They do not echolocate. They also hang out in colonies during the day, in full sunlight. The love the warmth, but the heat may cause problems with them if it goes over 43 degrees C. They do their socialisation and mating and happy time and baby whatever else they need during the day. In the same way we humans are daylight creatures, we also socialise at night, mate a lot at night in our free time, do our maintenance (cleaning and cooking and eating and social stuff) at night, even though we're daylight creatures. Just because they're nocturnal doesn't mean they have to sleep every daylight hour. Since they live in the sun during the day they get their vitamin D from the sunlight. This is critical to their baby bony development in combination with adequate calcium in their diet. In care, we need to make sure they get adequate sunlight to convert their dietary calcium into strong bony growth via the sunlight.

Same for me. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of being glued to the TV on Saturday afternoons, watching the UHF channel with Dr Shock’s “Creature Double Feature” The image of bats and vampires will always be connected in my mind. I know it’s ridiculous, but it’s the truth. I don’t have a negative or fearful feeling about bats, I’m not afraid of them at all - and am 100% for rescue and conservation...but it’s hard to look at them in certain poses and not think of vampires too.

U know once raised by humans sometimes they don’t survive . My cuz has a squirrel and he has to keep her bc she won’t make it in her own . But if these bats survive on their own awesome .
@Megabattie6 жыл бұрын
These animals are raised in a specific way. They are very loved and cared for by their mums in the colony, and are licked and groomed all over a few times a day. Then when they're about 3 months old in the wild, they are becoming more independent from their mums and hanging out with the other juvie/babies in the colony. At this stage in our care, we put the orphans of the season together in groups called creches, and they turn into feral teenagers. They bond with the group and they learn batty interaction and etiquette skills. When they're the right age, weight and length, and uninjured and emotionally coping, they're put into a release cage under a large colony, and the hatch is opened and they can come and go from the cage and food and interact with the colony. They can always come back for food if they can't find enough in the wild till they transition to a wild diet. They interact more and more with the colony till they just stop coming back for food and the support feeding is decreased and ceased. When the colony is ready to fly north for the winter, they fly off with it. It seems to work really well and the hand raised babies are released, fit for a life with the rest of the colony.

Bats are some of my favourite animals and I would love to do some volunteer work to care for orphans like yourself. :) I'm from the USA so I'm not sure how different things are, but I was curious what sort of training you've done and what the best way would be to get involved with something like this.
