Cute orphaned baby elephants 🐘🐘 Khanyisa and Fenya's sweet moments getting to know one another💚

It is heartwarming to see how Khanyisa heads out to greet Fenya in the mornings. She is so gentle in her approach, and very calm.
Fenya is taking her time, some days more interactive than others. You will see in this video one day compared to the next day.
See Fenya place her trunk into Khanyisa's mouth which was amazing to see. This is another way of communicating that elephants and other animals have that includes using the "Jacobson organ” otherwise known as the vomeronasal organ which is an olfactory organ (assisting in smell). They can pick up on each other's pheromones with this organ and collect information. This is a very important part of an elephant communication.
The duct that transmits the information is found on the upper part of the mouth. This duct, known as the vomeronasal duct is a mucus-filled opening that then leads the "information" to the vomeronasal organ (Jacobson's organ) where the nerve endings are located, allowing the sensing of the chemicals (pheromones) contained in the bodily fluid.
The pheromones are chemicals that provide information and deliver several messages from bodily fluids, such as saliva, sweat, urine, secretions from the elephant’s temporal glands and dung. The Jacobsen organ helps "decipher" these messages.
Oh, how we wish we knew what these two brave survivors say to one another!

It is a salve to my heart that Fenya's last days were in the care of loving humans who fed her, cared for her devastating wounds, gave her a safe and loving environment and that she got to meet Khanysia. She quickly learned to trust her carers showing her huge capacity to respond to and give love. Fenya's story is important in teaching us all about the dangers that the elephants face. Her life was not in vain.

@@sandrasharp2934 She hasn't been out of the nursery since coming to HERD. My feeling is Adine and the carers want to keep an eye on Fenya's wounds lest they become more infected. In the nursery they have control over what comes and goes out. Out with the rest of the HERD there might be a possibility of more infection, albeit unintended, from outside elements and the rest of the elephants. That wound in Fenya's neck is infested with maggots. They don't want to make that angrier. Fenya is likely in pain. No sense in making that worse.

Khanysia's will to live was very powerful. I believe Fenya and Phabenie were left depleated by the attacks and the loss of their mothers. HERD did everything they could and the Carers couldn't have done any better. HERD, I am sure, is happy to know that they were able to give those babies the best life they could have wished for during the last months of their lives. Thank you all.

Khanyisa is such a gentle soul after all she endured. Now I feel she will pass that compassion on to Fenya. After all not too long ago she was feeling the same emotions. Thank God for the humans but I knew this baby would be instrumental in connecting and communicating with Fenya to let her know she's safe and loved.
