@@CosmicCitiZenOfficial I can't tell if you meant this as a rebuttal, but yes, actually. Wage theft is OVERWHELMINGLY the vast majority of crime that takes place in the united states, and that doesn't even take into account basic labor theory which says that the only way for an owner of a business or corporation to have profit is to steal the value of their employee's labor. THAT SAID, groomers, in particular, suffer from an overwhelming problem with owners illegally classifying them as independent contractors, setting their wages EXTREMELY low, and stealing tips.

Of course if you're picky you get to be homeless and starve, but sure, it's VOLUNTARY. Nobody's forcing you! Starvation and homelessness aren't a gun to your head. Worse for pugs and bulldogs, Shih tzu's have a short snout, but it still sticks out about one half to a full inch from their face, pugs, I've seen pugs whose face could be literally described as concave because their wrinkles distend past their nose.

One of my babies is also really difficult with her face, but she has severe arthritis in her neck (osteophyte) which makes her jump anytime you touch her nape. Sometimes these dogs have specific reasons for being “difficult“ so I’m happy to hear you mention her breathing as a cause for her behavior.

I have a ten year old Shih Tzu named Bobo, and he cannot stand it when you touch his face. His groomer is very patient with him, and he loves seeing her even though he hates actually being groomed haha. She has to use hypoallergenic shampoos and conditioners with him as well because his skin is very sensitive. Apparently this is very common among Shih Tzu's.

Everyone develops a different technique to do difficult dogs like this. I don't like using shears at all on any area where the dog may suddenly lick or bite. Clippers are best and safest. I found 99% of them are easier to do if I use a Bravura (very little noise or vibration) on the very front of the face and lip area. I set it on #30 or even #40 for that area. I will grip the dog's muzzle with my left hand (I'm right-handed) over their eyes (blocking their line of vision) with my thumb and middle finger circling the muzzle, the clipper running and buzzing in my right hand near their face but not touching it. I then lightly rub the front of their muzzle several times with a finger from my right hand, which they recognize as a finger and tolerate as a rule. Then I very quickly run the Bravura lightly over the front of the muzzle, swiping just once. Set on #40 and not pressing down, followed by immediately running a finger over the muzzle several times to trick the dog into not realizing their face just got clipped. That typically gets the job done and the dog doesn't even know it happened. I also clip with the grain of the hair on the face with difficult dogs. You are then clipping away from their eyes and not pushing against the direction of the hair. They seem to have less of a reaction than when you clip against the grain. If the dog is reacting to the clipper itself being close to their face, I set it on #10, flip it over and drag it upside-down with the grain of the hair, which removes the body of the clipper from their view but still takes the hair down shorter with a natural look to it - and old trick from clipping show dogs you want to clean up the hair on without making them look shaved short. I have also had some luck with older dementia dogs who hate having their faces shaved, doing the face with a Bravura in the tub while they are still thinking "Bath", not "clipping my face". While they anticipate face clipping on the table, many don't react when it is done in the tub while you are shampooing and scrubbing their faces. Very old dogs that habitually would fight to the death to keep you from clipping their faces as part of their haircut will just stand in the tub and allow their faces to be clipped it they think you were just massaging their faces as part of the bath. Doesn't work every time, but does enough I give it a shot with them.
