I know people who practiced extreme frugality to achieve a magnificent outcome, like paying cash for a home, retiring early, long term travel. I know dedicated hikers who saved for a year, quit their jobs to hike from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail. We all know about individualists who lived in "poverty", but willed millions to charities. My husband and I went to college on the GI Bill. We chose not to work because we wanted to attend school full time. The result? Two degrees, debt free. It was hard, but we would have gladly sacrificed new pajamas and candles. For us, fulfillment didn't come from buying. I think it's all about delayed gratification with a sense of a higher purpose.
@christines27879 күн бұрын
@Chnacatsnflr - Delayed gratification is a skill that everyone can use. Its a hard one to learn when older. Its something we should be teaching kids. Not deprivation, but that rewards like greater appreciation of what they gain.

Best advice: you do you, I'll do me. Extreme frugality has it's place when one wants to jump start debt repayment and when building savings. Otherwise, it's all about moderation, and planning on spending for items other than necessities. 👍

Being frugal is a lifestyle to being able to afford! Saving money through being frugal helps when you do want to buy something. Keeping things like consumerism, throwing money away. I just watched a documentary on consumerism and its an eye opener. Peoples wants and buying patterns and how it seriously is the new down fall of society. Landfills overflowing, online purchasing exploding, quick fashion, returns going back to major retailers and sent straight to landfill. Its a real scary thought. We create our own inflation, you cant blame the government. Someone has to pay for a disposable society! You have to work on it from within your own four walls. Frugal living gives us the freedom to buy quality items, think before we click the buy button. Watch for sales, thrift shop, eliminating selection in your life. Thats a tough one for a lot of people! Ive lived this from all sides, young and reckless with money, the keeping up with the Joness' phase, the just got to have because ill never get the chance, to now being frugal and a minimalist. Ive enjoyed it all but i find this current lifestyle the most rewarding!

I feel like I’m kind of like this. Our expenses as a family of 6 are $4000 on a high month. I’m sometimes afraid to spend because I have a scarcity mindset after experiencing homelessness and severe financial abuse my close family members. I was scammed out of 6000 euros by my brother in law and sister, who got away with it because my parents preferred them over me (they had money and helped my parents). I had also no money to sue them as they took everything I had. Traumas like that often make you afraid of everything and make you feel like tomorrow everything could be taken away. So I’m always preparing for the worst. I also don’t trust many people after what was done to me and 0 support from even my parents. The best day of my life was when I married my American husband and got away from my native country.

Balance is the magic word. Life is too short to not treat oneself every now and then, if it's within budget. If you really want something out of budget then find a way to increase income so that it becomes more affordable. Or simply save up enough cash to eventually buy it, without suffering buyers remorse.

I try to be frugal about everything that matters to me, it's not just saving money but that is the natural consequence. I'm frugal about how much sugar I consume, it saves a lot on health - how much plastic I bring into the house - I bought a soda stream years ago that saves a lot because you reuse the same bottles so plastic bottles going to recycling or waste, same with other grocery items. Buying pre-loved when possible. Thinking about frugality when it comes to waste and health makes the challenge more fun and really gets you thinking about alternatives that do save a lot.

At age75, I am doing more mindful shopping. It is, in my opinion only, a ‘social event’ to shop on Black Friday. It’s fun to get out in crowds, see store decorations, be a part of the festivities. I think ahead at age 75 that in 1-2 years these things go to a Thrift store! I haven’t shopped in Black Friday since about 2016. My choice. I enjoy holiday music events, meeting with friends at a coffee shop, calling family/friends to visit. No gift exchange. We ‘all’ at this age downsizing. It’s a hot topic either my group of Seniors. So is this ‘balance’ or ‘common-sense’? I think in my situation it is the latter. Enjoy your holidays! If shopping fills a need, do it. For me, I am content with ‘things’ I already own. Don’t need more items.

That goes for rummage sales too, sometimes i like one or two things that they have in a free box and thats all i get. My boyfriend knows the town real well and so we are not driving and trying to find the house which is a plus for me because im not good at directions and house numbers.

Not fitting in with the frugal lifestyle... Who cares? Why try to fit in somebody elses box? I eat, cook, shop determined by my own income, and determine my current and future needs. Thats my box. And guilt is a waste of time. If i screw up, i learn from it and change it for next time. Life is short. I intend to enjoy every moment. That doesnt mean I dont budget or take care of my body. For me, It means i eat good healthy food I enjoy and exercise in enjoyable ways. For me it means i dont waste valuable time sitting still while watching endless hours of TV or going through drive thru to eat substandard food. It means my money goes to books, boardgames, seeds and things that bring value. I think everyone needs to find what truly makes them happy and then spend time doing those things and not worrying about what others think. Live life like your life depends on it.
