Hello Michael! I am in the USA. Maryland near DC. My journey watching your videos started with you during the lockdown. You only had a few videos back then. I started with number 2 and 3 and cut my husband's hair & beard. I have cut it 4 times now. Tomorrow will be the 5th. Thank you so much for your videos. I use the Wahl Senior Clippers (because it was what you used) and the Wahl Peanut Clipper. Now even when he could have gone out to get his haircut, he wants me to cut it. THANK YOU !!!!!!

That's so amazing Chrissy. Maybe you've found your true calling. You know my whole career I've wanted to try those peanut clippers. But for some reason I've never used them. That's a good set up. Seniors are the absolute best. Right now I'm extremely busy at work so alternate with one on charge and one in the hand. I can do 75 clients a week, and it'd be as much as 2 years before I'd change my seniors, they are so well built. You might not see much from me in the shop for a while we are going into complete lockdown on boxing Day again. 🤪🙈

Costco clippers and scissors for my husband who won’t go to barber. He has thin hair longer and balding at top. I’ve done a couple of times and it’s ok. So I was looking for detailed instructions. I watched a few videos, I like them. Hopefully they like me. I will see tomorrow.

I cut my own hair for five years now, but I always struggled with the top and the connection to the sides. So I always had to cut the top very short.Your videos about cutting with the grain were very helpful. Now I am trying to get a classic comb over. More videos and tips for self cutting would be wonderful. I use cheap Wahl clippers by the way.Thanks a lot from Germany.

Hey Christian, good to hear your five years into self haircutting. I'd imagine you've improved a lot in that time. There is some considerations you'd need to make if you want to do a comb over. If I get a client in I'll get the tripod set up and film it.

I've been cutting my own hair for about two years after deciding that I basically was doing a better job than some of the cuts I was paying for. I started just buzzing it and worked my way up to doing different things. I can taper my neck pretty well now and work around the ears pretty well too. I still struggle a little with the crown if I'm honest. I used a Wahl Color coded clipper for a long time (just because it was on sale at the time of purchase). A few months ago I bought a cordless Wahl Designer after deciding I wanted to upgrade my clipper. It was a great decision - the clipper is much lighter and easier to hold than the previous one, and just feels overall more modern and pleasant to use. These videos are really helpful, thank you for making them!

The crown is definitely the hardest part of a self haircut. I've been trying to think of a way to show it easily. It's complex even when you stand over someone and cut it but trying to self cut the crown is tricky. I'm glad you like the videos Matt, I will keep uploading and try to convey as much information as I can 🙌

Didn't get my hair cut for 4 months because my job involves a lot of traveling and because of the virus you just can't get a haircut. So I got myself a set of clippers BaByliss E990E those aren't really budget but I didn't have much to choose from. Watched a lot of videos and after seeing one Michael video I was confident enough to give myself a haircut. Sides only because I was thinking about getting a slickback look for some time and now my top is halfway there. First cut and it went better than half of cheap barbers in my hometown. Maybe that was begginers luck but I'm looking forward for the second time. Thanks for great videos!

Hi, firstly thanks for your videos, I have also passed them on to my daughter to enable her to cut the Grandchildren’s hair. I’m sixty years old and have been cutting my own hair for nearly 20 years in a typical short back and sides, forces type style. I like to keep it neat and tidy with a Philips home haircut 180 razor, I think I am on my third one now. I know the blades aren’t brilliant, but it does make it easier for me to do the neckline as I have a rod in my spine which makes it difficult using your type of clipper. I’ll do cut my hair most weekends and if I’m going “out out” I’ll always trim the neckline between cuts. I find your techniques to be excellent, easy to follow and I haven’t given myself a bad one at all yet. I’ve made quite a few errors over the years I can tell you 🤣. Stay safe and keep up the good work 👍

Your a proper veteran of home haircuts now Mark. Those Philips clippers are a really clever design, I've got to admit I'm not the most flexible either. I can reach the back reasonably well but when I'm trying to show it to a camera with two mirrors without obscurring the shot it's a bit like a game of twister. Glad you have found the videos useful.

Hi Michael, Thanks for taking the time to produce all these helpful videos. I also started cutting my own hair at the beginning of lockdown in March. I didnt want to spend loads on a clipper in case I didnt get on with cutting my own hair, so I bought some Wahl Clip n Trim clippers. I'm really pleased with them and also bought a handheld mirror to do the back. I havnt been to the barbers in about eight months, its definitely a steep learning curve but a great skill to be self sufficient 👍

I started cutting my own hair during the lockdown and have been practicing ever since (with your help, thanks). I struggle cutting the back of my head and the right side of my head as I'm left handed and I have to hold a mirror up with one hand which doesn't make it easy for me. My clipper is a Hatteker rfc 690 which I find cuts pretty well.
@theoneminutebarber4 жыл бұрын
Those hatteckers look pretty cool and seem to come with a lot of attachments. Did you see my fade video. In that one I took the mirrored door out of the bedroom wardrobe and positioned it behind me so I had both hands free. Having both being able to move without the difficulty of holding a hand mirror up really makes a difference.

Great advice and good clipper. Didn’t want to obliterate the crown but now left with ridge between guards 1 and 2 as no in between on this clipper. How do I blend it with these clippers right at the back top of the head to calm down this ridge.

I haven't seen some of these concepts anywhere else on YT, so thanks for making this content. I've been cutting my own hair for 4 years now. Whenever the top gets too long, I just buzz it off with a #8 clipper attachment, but I want to avoid being forced to do that. I saw your video about trimming the top, with the clippers going with the grain, and also the one about trimming the sides, going vertically, instead of rounding. When the top gets a bit long, how would you suggest connecting the sides, so that you don't end up with an undercut?
@theoneminutebarber4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jay, I made an updated video about 6 weeks ago on cutting the sides which shows a good cutting technique using clippers for blending in. You basically work down the grain of the pariatal ridge with a number #2 gaurd on.

New subscriber! Would love to see some reviews on best trimmers 💕 also from Morayshire but live in Yorkshire now 💈

Hey Katy, it's great to know I've got a subscriber from my neck of the woods. I'm a huge fan of the Andis T outliner. The blades are so fine. There's no need to zero gap them. Only thing with them is that you need to put some silicone grease on the plastic that holds the spinning pin inside. I was going through a lot blades before discovering this.

I started doing self haircuts due to the lockdown.. but have decided to carry on doing them as I quite enjoy the challenge, and it had always seemed impossible to find a barber who understood what I wanted. I forget the exact model, but I just have some cheap wahl clippers. I ordered some Wahl Lithium Ions, but the build quality seemed so poor I sent them straight back.
@theoneminutebarber4 жыл бұрын
It's unfortunate they weren't built the best. The clippers I used in this video are really cheap but I thought they were fine for home haircuts. Only downside for me was the lack of lever. I've used Wahl for my entire career, plus andis for some cuts. There was a period about 14 years ago when they started manufacturing in China and the build quality went out the window. They went back to Germany which solved the problem right away but I think now most of their clippers are made in the US. If your spending any kind of money on Wahl I'd recommend Wahl seniors.
@rollforever854 жыл бұрын
@@theoneminutebarber Funnily enough I had some cheap Wahls I'd bought in the 90s which lasted me years. Non of the budget clippers I've bought since then have been as good as those. I bought the Ions for the lever and the battery life, but the lever would actually catch on the body of the clippers when you tried to move it between open and closed. The materials felt incredibly cheap for the £70 price tag as well. Will definitely have a look at the Seniors. Thanks for the recommendation and I shall look forward to more videos. Cheers!

Hello Michael. I have been cutting my hair since the lockdown. When I saw where things were going, I ordered a set of Wahl corded clippers from Amazon (Wahl 79467 Smooth Cut Pro Clipper) with all black plastic guards. I am getting to the point where I am very happy with the results. Not sure if it warrants a video, but any tips for us self cutters over 60 who are thinning on top and have a bald crown? Your current techniques do very well though. Thanks for all you do and keep the videos coming!
@theoneminutebarber4 жыл бұрын
Bob the best thing to do for thinning hair is wash it well, two shampoo applications in the same shower visit. then condition and wash out. then blow dry with some mouse until its bone dry. first dry hot then when its dry turn the dryer to cold and cool it down in place. let me know how you get on.

Excellent vids thanks.. I've been hacking my hair with cheapo cordless trimmers (no idea the make?)..anyway question. I have very thick/stiff hair and tend to have it cut like a textured flat top...short back & sides, spikey up top.. So I've been ok doing the sides/back (thanks to your vids 👍) but how should I do the top, at the mo it's long on top and I've been thinning it out with the trimmers as per your vid..I would like to know how to trim it 'flat' across the top?? Sorry for the long question and carry on with the vids..good job 👍

Getting it flat is really going to need a barbers hand I'd say Kevin. You could buy a flat top comb and try but it's a really precision cut. Not much help I know but not sure a good method to do it yourself

Well you wanted to know what equipment i am using. i only cut my own hair and have been doing so since last April due to covid, i am using the kemei KM-809A clippers and some decent cheap shears and comb. I can soon say that i havent been to the barbers in nearly a year and i get to have a haircut every 2 weeks now, so it is a great skill to learn. Obviously dont want to put barbers out of business so i will visit again one day but for now its got me out of a messy state for the last 8 months or so. also the equipment has paid for itself now and i am saving good money on not having a haircut every month, instead i do it myself and get it done twice a month for no cost. yes its not as good as a barber does but it is very acceptable. i am also cutting my dads hair for him using a set of LA-M838

Seems I'm finding more of your videos that I didn't see posted before! I've been cutting my own hair for over 30 yrs & my boys (when they let me). Hardest part is the blending of the top to sides, getting a good taper as well. Thank you Derek. Sometimes the most obvious thing you can do to make hair look thinner is to cover the hair loss with long hair. The reason I say that is that it doesn't lay naturally like dense follicle growth.

Levers are useful for fine tuning Ian but I doubt the majority of home haircuts involve use of the lever. If you are attempting something like a zero fade. then a lever is a must.
