Awesome video! What a fun combination the Melodicer and the MC-101 are! I find the MC-101 to be an indispensable compact box of joy! This combination is something you could get lost in for hours. I have an MC-101 and I am always finding new ways to use it and this compact little set up you just showed has convinced me to go get the Melodicer not only to use with the rest of my eurorack gear, but in combination with the CV to Midi converter I can use it all over the studio! It would seem so obvious to own a cv to midi converter, yet I never really thought about that possibility. As always your videos inspire me to expand my thinking when examining the musical possibilities of the gear I already own and how such an inexpensive utility module can open a whole new world of possibilities! Thank you for sharing your experience with the rest of us!

Melodicer, so inspirational, worth every penny... 100% agree. Hadn't thought about going this direction with midi / CV. Great, thanks!

Been watching your videos for a while. They are some of the best on KZbin. I do have to mention I can’t watch the very beginning with the blurred titles because it actually gives me a physical reaction and I get a headache for about 3 minutes. I just close my eyes until I hear you start talking.

Vermona presented their own extension module for the Melodicer at SB‘23 which is supposed to provide Midi-out data from their module. Unfortunately still no official announcement from their side so far.

You said, "It's really not complicated at all." I think I've got, then I don't got it. I agree, Tim, this is a lovely setup for song generation/exploration. Puts you right in that sweet spot to springboard in to the thick of it. Ok, my head hurts now. WHAT IF, say, I wanted to buy this system. I've owned Vermona in the past, so easy to select Melodicer as THE Sequencer pick! Then the Roland MC-101. What is the little box mounted on a stand (like free-floating & tilted downward in space--looking)? Looks like a ZOOM brand. IT looks like it would be a 4 Channel Mixer. Ok, whatever it is, ADD one of those to the list. Next, the Doepfer CV to MIDI (lower box) module. Then I guess [other way around now] the MIDI to CV Converter, a la VERMONA box #2 is just that---MIDI t to CV, Conversion, right? Then,, I'd need 2 wooden cases. Power supplies?? Dunno. I'd needPatch Cables: I think Thomann would call them t THE TimPack.t WHAT is the SILVER-face Module that is left of the VERMONA CV to MIDI Converter?? I know....I already asked that question. WHAT IS the Silver-Faced Module to the LEFT OF the VERMONA CV to MIIDIin the Upper box? AND....what is that Silver Module doing?? This is a $2,000 setup, wouldn't you say? Thanks so much, Tim.

Thanks for that, Tim! I use exactly this combo - together with an alternative version using just Pamela's New Workout as a clock source for when I don't need the MIDI out - with another Doepfer format converter (the 190-4) providing the clock in from external MIDI devices (usually my DAW). All of these are ultimately clocked by the aforementioned PNW in one way or another. PNW forms the heart of all my timing for MIDI and CV-based synths - external LFO's, Arps, sequencers, analogue drum machines, etc. - save for when I integrate my Cubase DAW into the setup. However, I have never managed to 'stop' or 'pause' or otherwise 'mute' the MeloDICER, only ever slow it down. Have you ever managed to pause it, say in the middle of a live piece, to restart it as and when required? If so, how? I'd really appreciate a more detailed technical review of the MeloDICER if you ever get the chance. And you're right, the MeloDICER is incredibly inspirational. I considered the Stochastic Instruments Sig+ but, no matter how many videos I watched or times I read the manual - plus some in-depth correspondence with Phin Head - it always seemed less direct, not as ergonomic, with useful functions hidden behind non-intuitive button presses, overly-complex to some extent and, ultimately a little bit confusing as a performance instrument. The only other 'sequencers' I've found with the MeloDICER's degree of hands-on usability are Conductive Labs' NDLR - though it has such limited performance storage, which makes it difficult to employ live (as one cannot readily recall setups or patches) and appears to be something of a myopic 'plaything' for its inventor - and the MIDICake Arp - which seems very user-friendly and well-supported by its inventor (and, as such, I aim to acquire one later this year!). It would be interesting to hear your perspective / see comparative reviews between all 4 of these at some point! 🤔🎛🙄🎹🤭🎚😂🎶 Thanks again for this and many of your other musically-focused reviews.

I've been considering a set for CV to Midi for a while now just to get midi out from some of the funkier eurorack sequencers that there's just not many direct midi equivalents to. But since I bought a TR8S I'm tapped out on hardware purchases for a while but it's paired nicely with my MC-707.

🙏💚🧡👍😺🤗Will not discuss the price, I've no money. But I have old Juno 6 and SH2000, and a Roland MC 500, where I would like to enter CV by midi wich will add so much things with midi tracks. So I will do an integration in racks to add the midi ability to those end seventies original instruments, i'm not desperate to find the way to do it. Thanks for the video, pretty material you have, and the most important is not the price but being inspirational 👌☺️😺

This makes a ton of sense, I had 2 M32s back in the day hooked up to a Toraiz Squid which was CG/Gate out x 2, issue was it only ever got 1 M32 working, and the amount of time I spent trying to get it to pair up was just wasted time. Squids menu diving is horrible. I like to have different sequencers doing different things and sometimes having 2 sequencers control 1 device, it just gives you that extra control and also allows for better creativity. I have a NDLR which I find cumbersome, it's a cool little unit let down by that horrible LCD. The KSP is much better but that Vermona looks so much fun to play with. It seems to do everything the NDLR does, just with a physical interface rather than having to menu dive and set parameters. This is how all sequencers should be, all surface controls and easy access. This is why I have still yet to find a perfect sequencer, but the one you showed us, it's so simple but it can get very technical with minimal effort once you know what to do. My Polyend Seq is a great device for adding and taking out notes due to the 32 notes and 8 lanes, BUT you cannot really control the note like you can the way you showed us. It's like modular has the best parts of what us normies want lol. And those little tracks you did, excellent work. I had an MC707 and it was horrible as the UI, but sound wise it was fine, just that I never bought it just as a module, the sequencer to me was cumbersome. Partnered with the Vermona I am sure I would have had a ton more fun. Once again thx for the excellent vid Tim.

Crazy.. a few days ago, I wasn’t planning on it.. but I bumped into a great deal on a subharmonicon and DFAM.. that I was unable to pass up.. which then lead me into this hardware sequencing rethink and.. in this was the midi to cv and cv to midi question.. and what would I need to get a workflow going. Well the good news was I went with a motu interface recently.. so I’m using cv tools in Ableton to control the Moog’s, and I can get MIDI sync out.. Yeah, but I really want a make noise no control sequencer.. where you can do the janky time sequencing.. and to generally mess with crazy unstable synch.. at which point I’ll have to put down the midi synch.. but I still want to be able use midi gear.. Ether which way.. im very much in a experimental, explorative, search for workflows moment in my work.. so I guess it just makes your video land nicely for me.. like makes me feel like we’re all kinda in similar waters of trying to figure stuff out.

if you like the melodicer which really is a great module, then you need to try out stochastic insperation generator by stochastic instrument. it is basically the melodicer, less hp and 4 cv/gates instead one. it does everything melodicer does and it has built in eg's. i am lucky to own both. but absolutely love the SIG more than melodicer.

Tim, I have attempted to integrate eurorack / cv into my dawless set up before, and inevitably I run into some math problems in the conversions. Is that the case here? (Trying to use the Kenton converter to get the Moog Harmonicon sequences out to the Vermona Perfourmer!). Appreciate your thoughts.

Hi. All I am doing is generating midi note on and note off data, no midi cc modulations necessary. So only simple but the doepfer module handles it perfectly

Any clue on how to sync the Melodicer to midi with an Arturia Keystep ? I have yet to make it work :( It's the only module I have that can send clock right now...I see that you are using the Modular qMI2, any other less expensive module that could do the job ?

Did a quick internet search and this was the first to come up: ALM mmMidi MIDI CV & Clock Interface Module. Just over £100. Never tried it but what you need is just a module that converts midi clock to a control voltage.
