The answer in this game is always ice tear. This spell makes the combat basically a joke. Even the final boss, you're melting his hp. Invest a bit in intelligence and you can spam the spell. It's an amazing game, I really loved every second and completed every ending.

Honestly the more you play the more it becomes it's own thing. Going into it expecting a KF or Shadow Tower experience is just going to make you wonder where all the armor went and why you can level stuff like move speed and jump height.

See, I started playing Lunacid before I saw anything on Shadow Tower, or Kings Field, so it was a really fun retro dungeon crawler experience for me. It is definetly a little obtuse, and there are *some* context clues to help explain some things, but for the most part there isnt, yeah. Like, with the castle, as a Vampire you can get in freely, but the one NPC I think made an off handed remark about vampires, which gave me the idea to bleed on the door. Its not a bad game, but i do like how the gameplay does progress more than just 'damage go up', because speed and dex have a tangible effect on movement and how you get around the world.

Lunacid was exciting to me when I found it The intro was super cool, and I was pretty sold until I met the dev's waifu demon-girl with a comically oversized scythe. That NPC, so early on, and forced to interact with, killed the game for me. It totally clashed with the tone and artstyle the intro video set. I tried to keep playing for a while, but I just couldn't get that stupid NPC out of my head, always wondering if I'm about to run into the next massive artstyle clash

I find it hard to explain, the start was so slow and terrifying and I loved the progression system. Having random spells that could entirely replace some stat points like the mega jump to never level DEX or the speed up to be fast enough to NEVER have to block or walk again meaning no DEF is amazing. And near the end of the game I was just a zooming wrecking ball that had a lifesteal sword to never heal and the berserk sword to oneshot everything not immune to pure physical felt great. As if I made my own build and playstyle. But it lacked something... maybe a bigger team to have a bigger game? more slots for weapon and magic so I didn't feel like I needed to change weapons and magic all the time? More dialogue or hints to the secret areas and weapons? I don't know, it's a really good game and I enjoyed all my time in it, even if I was lost and had to use guides for hints and to find a path to progress. I guess it just left me feeling as if I had a really good, but really small meal.

I like it when games do stuff with your character name or something and it turns out unintentionally hilarious. That’s why in games like Earthbound or Stardew Valley where you pick your “favorite thing” I always write poop or something childish like that. It’s hilarious, especially in Earthbound. 😆 I highly recommend giving it a try.

Idk what stats Cvit invested in or how much he farmed if any at all. But I never had an issue with damage feeling insignificant, but then again I did get the lucky rusty sword drop and vampire sword drops on my first run through the areas they drop in. Made a balanced build with most stats pretty even and most of the game I was 3 shootings most enemies with any of my weapons. Only did a single farming run with high lunacy about half way through the game.

I didn't have anything to relate Lunacid to, so for me it was a pretty fresh dungeon crawling experience. I played it off of a recommendation, and don't regret it. Boss fights were pretty piss though, I'd understand if my damage was trash because the devs didn't want ranged options trivializing them. But melee being just as bad made me irrationally upset, especially after a few deaths. Also, this game was really quite easy, yeah sure selectable difficulties and all that. But you go from being paper that hits like a noodle, to being a freight train that hits like a child who can throw a punch.

I really really liked this game but I have to agree about the combat. Magic is not balanced in any way with spells like Ice Tear just deleting the final boss with relatively low stat investment. Melee is, by comparison, pretty weak, really clunky to use, and leaves you far more vulnerable to damage as you have to get in close. It's a fantastic game for something made by one person. The environments are really atmospheric and can get pretty spooky when they want to be, the soundtrack is frankly fantastic, and it's an extremely comfy playthrough. It's a game you play because of the vibes rather than for a balanced combat experience. Oh, and as Cvit says the Blessed Wind sword is busted but depending on your setup spamming the button may hurt your hands or just be generally uncomfortable. If you're going the KBM route it should be fine but if you're going controller then it can be rough if you have analogue triggers as there's no way to remap controls in-game. If you have the option, I would legitimately recommend using a turbo button if you can for blessed wind (as you don't have to care about timing any more). Save your hands.

I recently stopped playing Lords of the Fallen for this exact reason. I'm so tired of alt tabbing and pulling up a guide just to figure out where the hell to go. Its so frustrating. I don't think i'll play this style of game anymore because that's not the only issue i have but it is one of the major ones. i don't like having to upgrade a weapon to deal more damage, my stats should completely cover that, i don't like that changing my stats is a difficult ordeal or can only be done once per playthrough or only so many times because there isn't that many items to change your stats with, i don't like that you have to lock in one stat block for the whole game for one weapon. i want to freely swap between weapons and builds at my discretion to see what is more fun without being punished for it.

Lunacid honestly fell totally flat for me. It sounds mean, but my takeaway is that it honestly feels like it wears the skin of King's Field without understanding the heart or soul. So many small things add up that make me just go "Do they not get it at all???". Stuff like how poorly designed areas are leading to loads of similar looking rooms with no purpose, the poorly-implemented moon phase stuff, the loading doors that totally go against the core philosophy of KF ( presumably because they designed areas that didn't actually fit together a-la DS2). the untoggleable popup every time the music changes. There's just too much to list. King's Field was one of my first playstation experiences and I've loved Fromsoft since I was a kid. I've written up my own review that stretched into a few thousand words but the short and simple for me is that Lunacid is good and original, but the good parts aren't original and the original parts aren't good. It deviates a lot from the KF formula and unfortunately the worst parts of the game are the ways it deviates save for a couple of exceptions. At one point it also becomes VERY clear that the dev was getting bored of KF and had started playing SotN as there's an abrupt switch in all the tone and stuff it's harping. There are a couple more King's Field-inspired projects in development (Labyrinth of the Demon King has me super hyped) so I'm hoping that something else manages to truly achieve that level of immersion and quality that KF4 left us with years ago.

I honestly thought the game was "ok" at best. I honestly believe the dev Kira is being praised too much for mediocrity. I play a LOT of games, and I see Lunacid for what it is, a love letter that oversells itself. Every single thing in the game could have very easily been improved or added onto before release, it feels like an extended demo to something intended to be bigger and more fleshed out. The characters are hardly characters, they each just have a few lines and no "real" lore. One of the main ones is literally his DnD self insert that serves little to no function other than getting you to the hub and existing. The music does not fit the atmosphere in a lot of locations to the point it ruins the feel. The secrets are not worth it in the slightest and were not well implemented, there is usually something in game to push you towards them, but not in this game. I wont go into detail, but one of them requires you play the game on a real full moon, but there is nothing in game referring to it. The moon cycles in game are there, but they don't really do anything that matters, so what's the point? The combat was basic at best and extremely easy to cheese. The enemy AI was basic at best, they all just kind of slowly move towards you and hardly any have ranged attacks. There is literally only 3 bosses and one is a "secret". The endings are all extremely disappointingly lackluster and not well written, including the "true" ending and the secret one. It was honestly a very disappointing experience overall. Its a good BASE to a much better game, but the fans of this dev and people who don't actually play many games historically ride this dev for his games when I think a little constructive criticism would go a long way for the quality of his products. I feel the same way about Lost In Vivo, he rode on the coattails of Silent Hill and a few other games, but ultimately made a very lazy adaptation rather than a fully fleshed out title. Its a shame and I would like to see him make better games in the future as there is clearly some talent there. Thank you for coming to my TED talk, hope you all have a good night

True, the menu needs a lot of work, boss has too much health, i didn't have problems with the puzzles, the blood pedestal was simple, i mean, you just went by an entire blood ocean into a vampire castle, hinted by sir garrat, combat is the weakest part of the game, even though weapons are fun, like axe of harming being used to zoom by areas at supersonic speed, some secrets are very specific and unintuitive but i like this game a lot, monsters need a resistance overhaul, making inefective weapons not so frustating

I absolutely loved this game, but I had the same problems with navigation. I played this in parallel with a friend and we had such a different journey. I picture my surroundings mainly via landmarks and distinctive places, but when everything looks the same my brain simply falls apart - my friend on the other hand had no problems whatsoever and when spectating me he always said "why you goin that way, you just came from there" and I couldn't anymore at one point. For one dungeon I even drew my own map to orientate myself and at the last part of that level my map got more and more shitty as I had to correct it many times to the point where I was absolutely sure the level changed something when I turned a corner. And my friend assured me that this was not the case, but I made it before going completely mad. It's really rough in that regard.

The first half is extremely well made but the new 1.0 zones just kinda suck. Weapons are outclassed by older gear, or just don't do anything interesting. Dark/fire and Dark/Light become way to fucking abundant too, there's ONE ice weapon and five or so dark/fire weapons. The level design is also lacking, the boiling grotto is just two long corridors, the egypt temple is for some reason on a railroad and lacks any interesting traps outside of a small maze of hastily copy pasted dart traps and the buggy claw trap. Difficulty in general is lacking. Whole area is just pointless because a fucking torch exists and any fire dot activates the armor. The Prison is latria without any alterations, yeah it's a reference but it's just lazy if you don't iterate on it. only interesting part is the giant skeleton area, sadly it lacks any meat to it and just a gauntlet to pass through. The Arena is just, empty. You'd think there would be gladiators, beasts, and a bunch of other monsters but it's just some scalies and plants. What a fucking let down. Ash labyrinth is just a bunch of corridors and two enemies thrown about. Also where are the VHS tapes, they were the best part, not this smelly stinky dusty ass orb. The saving grace really is the Tartarus, ending as it ties up a bunch of loose ends, has interesting secrets you have to suss out, and a great payoff with a call back to lost in Vivo. We even got Basilisk easter eggs.

spoilers for lunacid: i love how the game introduces mimics behind a fake out hidden wall behind another fake out hidden wall, and then spawns a mimic back in the first dead end

Bruh im about 4 minutes in and I need to stop watching. The cattle door part made me realise I wasted my afternoon looking for a red diamond that doesn't exist. The jump height leveling made me realise I'm potentially underlevelled.

Honestly, I classified Elden Ring as a "You Need a Guide" game as well. Otherwise, you shouldn't make puzzles or hints too obtuse. La Mulana is a decent example of a game that gives you juuuuuust enough to not need a guide.

I never used a guide for Elden Ring, the games not designed to be 100%d You explore at your own pace and that gives you a great stream of content and progression

I was disappointed by it. It looks and feels more like a simplistic Morrowind, with less quests, dialogues, maps and characters than a King's Field.

tedium caused by a lack of game design knowledge is a terrible basis for an even game experience. You don't want it to crawl to a halt.

The guide thing I understand entirely, and it's probably the 3 main issues I have with these types of games. 1) Scaling stats. This and Dread Delusion do the old Elder Scrolls style of near-infinite(?) scaling. While I personally love having the speed and momentum that gets to Tribes: Ascend tier of running about and leaping, both the ability to outrun most enemies or just tricking them by leaping over trivializes everything. 2) NPCs. I'm not against the OCs of most of the hub-world characters but they just feel so empty. Demi and the Crow-lady periodically show up randomly and give you basic dialogue that don't seem to imply much if any lore of the world? Then I wasn't sure who the knight was at the end, and the slime girl was also a bit too memey, imo. 3) Secrets. I know these types of games are typical for the indie scene and much like Inscription or Deltarune wants to go for the, "Scan files and search every corner to find the super secret thing" but sometimes they feel too obtuse. I bothered with transcribing almost a dozen enemies using Bestial Communion to get flavor text and just figured I would wait on others to go at-it. Ultimately I completed and thought it was overall great. Would love to see another crack at this type of game but I assume Kira will move on to another completely different genre of game.

Basically none of the NPCs even feel like they're from the same game, which compounds with all the irony poisoned dialogue to really kill immersion for me.
