Join me as I discover a brand new campsite at the base of the iconic Pen Y Fan Mountain in the central Brecon Beacons. Arriving at night I didn't know where I was until morning revealed the most spectacular nearly wild campsite in the area. There are no shower or toilet facilities but you can park up or hike up and pitch up without fear of the landowner getting his shotgun out. He really is that cool and will collect rent freely on his quad bike. People from all over the UK use this site and have been doing so for many years.
With fine Oaks, views of the mountain and the mountain stream Cwm Llwch flowing through it's a dream what with an excellent route up the mountain from the site too. Access is through a gate at the end of a narrow road. See Map link below.

What a stunning place! I have a feeling I've walked through that campsite or part of it, to get to Pen y Fan. I remember the river. Even without taking photographs, there's something in the experience of sitting beneath shining stars. An experience that might've been ordinary for our ancestors and the absence of light pollution. Wow Mark - hit the jackpot with that place. Views to the big ones and a quiet and tranquil spot too. loved that mountain stream and the fact that the farmer was so cool about camping there. I never got to see the meteor showers but saw some other footage. Getting cooler now mate, just a hint of cool mornings and a bit of mist on the lakes, love this time of year!! Wonderful to wake up not knowing exactly where you are!! 👍👍👍👍

Looks like my kind of site Mark, quiet and simple (a bit like me 😉). I like a bit of site camping too but in lots of cases I find sites like this one a bit thin on the ground and the swankier ones I find bloody expensive. I don't know the Bannau Brycheiniog (check out Michael Sheen's pronunciation....very poetic) area very well at all, only ever seen it from afar. ATB, Chris

You'd love it here Chris - the site is dead basic - no showers or toilets but incredible for its views and mountain stream/Oaks and flat pitches. Hey, just checked out Michael Sheen's video. Hi Mark this sounds an amazing site and the meteor shower would be great to see and nice to get out with Jason. Couldn't watch much as my eye is inflamed after Alf gave me an infection and long story short all is going well with steroid and anti inflammatory eye drops and no damage to the eye thanfully but still sore so will catch up you when I can. Looks a beautiful site with fantastic views. Not many places you can have open fires these days, most like them in raised fire pits. Where are you expected to go for big jobs lol, not sure id want to pay for a site with no loo, just as easy to go wild camp. I like Jays tent, I knew it was a southern cross 1 before you said because its a tent id like if I could afford one 😂 What was the sky like? id assume its a good dark sky there. thanks for sharing Atb Mark

It's mega beautiful in good light and conditions Mark - not always like that of course but there are always fire pits - the farmers cool. Re- the toilets I suppose you'd have to jump in your car and head for Brecon toilets. Ha ha! I agree it's a cool tent J's tent - pricey as you hint at. Great in high winds. It's a dark sky reserve around here so very good. A pleasure to share bro. I loved it there. Mark

It's a beautiful area, especially when it's empty as in the video, the one on the right is Corn Du, on the left is Pen Yr Fan, if you follow that track it takes you up to the lake with a path on the right of the lake taking you up past the Obelisk up to Corn Du and onto the Fan. I'm quite surprised youve given it's location though Mark, I think advertising it isn't such a good idea mate, the small woods already gets chopped up by fools for the fire's, live trees have been felled by knobheads with chainsaws, it seems a shame to invite just anyone, too many unscrupulous characters around that have no respect for nature.

Yeah, it is beautiful Paul. Thanks for the heads up - I know Corn Du and Pen Y fan - it was Crybin and Fan Y Big I was unsure of. Been up there a number of times from the North too but not this route. I'll do it some time. As for disclosure it's all over the net any how via forums/UK Climbing/uksouthwest/walking forum and so on and of course youtube . It is a shame about the fools - I pick up after them.
