Punished Props Academy gotta be honest with you on this one, the shotgun shown in this doesn’t make a lot of sense. Whatever those things are on the sides, they don’t serve much purpose. If they’re balance weights, it probably doesn’t need them, it’s a heavy-barrel side by side. If they’re some kind of electromagnetic device for a railgun, well that doesn’t make much sense either, it’s still a break action shotgun. Regardless of all that, I appreciate the upload. Very good looking props.

For scales texture you can use a pattern ( steel mesh or similar). Plastidip only goes trough the holes and leaves a bumpy scale like texture when it cures. 👌

As a cheaper alternative you can use texture glass paint (kids draw with them on windows straight out of the bottle) and apply it with a brush. Adding acrylic colours into it can make pretty cool textures like rust and whatnot. 😉

I found that the best way to make a convincing wood grain is to start with a base coat of a super duper light brown, then clear coat, then use long brush strokes to do a relatively heavy dry brush of a slightly darker brown, then clear coat, repeat for between three to five coats finishing with black before the final coat.

Generally in theatre you go light first and then dark over. The other thing we often did, especially on "flooring" was to coat it all with "mop and glow", gives it a very durable soft sheen that looks very old polished woodlike.

favorite technique i found by accident and have never seen anyone else do, to get a great great coroded rusty metal, take the prop wave it under the shower to get it covered with water droplets, then hit it with a blow torch the water drops will protect the foam, and the areas around it will melt, creating a crazy bumpy gnarled texture,

For metallic finishes, I like to use a stone textured spray paint, then paint it black and lightly brush silver paint over it - this gives a pretty neat textured metallic look, especially good for large chunks of plain metal. Makes it a lil more visually interesting!

I made a mistake the other day that turned out very interesting (and became a big positive). In searching for EVA foam (I wanted it in colors and I needed some long pieces) I came across "yoga mats" that said they were EVA and came in the colors I needed. Well it may chemically be EVA but it has a lot of plasticizer in it and a nylon mesh in the middle. I was planning on it being fairly stiff but the yoga mats are super flexible. It worked out because they gave a more "organic" movement to the giant flower petals. I stiffend the center line with hot glue and TIG welding rod and they were a big hit. This stuff would be great as a "leather" armor or reptilian skin or something. It handles a bit more like foam rubber but hot glues well and super glue worked well. Contact cement worked OK, but I think it may be a bit too flexible for the contact cement? Also rattle can spray paint takes forever to dry on the stuff. I assume the plasticizers inhibit the curing? It did get non tacky but it took three days. Luckily the whole point of buying them colored was to avoid having to paint them so there was only a small area with pain on it. I sent you a tweet with a picture of the finished project.

Um, actually, rust CAN leech into wood, so having a bit of rust between the bands and stock would only serve to make it look that much more realistic. Also, a favorite texturing technique of mine is to use hot glue to simulate hasty or inexperienced welding beads; you lay it down fairly thich, and make sure you do a bit of stop/start and pull, and iy actually makes for quite the convincing weld.

@@SKSProps I get that. Also why I own a broad range of clear coats. I'm currently working on a foam crowbar and think it's too shiny. I think the hammer would have more metal exposure due to its usage.

Hammers are internal on a break open double barrel. What looks like a hammer on the back would actually be used to break open the action on a real shotgun.

@@chris15252 it would still have more metal exposure because of its use. And a double barrel often has 2 triggers one for each barrel. Not one. Saw it and thought I'd mention it

Instead of using foam as wires only to have them painted later, why not use actual wires ? Awesome prop anyway.

That's a question for the game designers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think it uses different ammo than your average gun. We'll have to see when the game comes out@
