Wow! Great informative video. I think you've just unlocked the method to remove all the grime from factory sanding/prepping. So even if someone wraps the vehicle that this should be the very first step. I would like to know if fine polishing compound would do the trick to remove some of the factory caused abrasion dark areas on the hood and doors.

There's absolutely no way i'm keeping mine without a wrap. It's probably a good idea to do this before wrapping a truck to get the best adhesion on the wrap.

Every commercial kitchen knows the 3 treatments for stainless hoods, panels, equipment...BKF, Windex, Shiela Shine. Still requires frequent attention, as will the Cybertruck unless you prefer the patina of time and work.

Wow! Thanks the info and demonstration. I was skeptical, but the difference is stunning. Great job!
@mikapeltokorpi76718 ай бұрын
Preproduction cars are months old. Production cars are weeks old. Maybe the difference is there? That barkeeper's friend might have silver in it. The remaining "smudges" and banding are due DA, mineral distribution and due different pressures the parts of the panels are exposed during manufacturing panel. There is also lot of oils used during manaufacturing the panels and during manufacturing the steel rolls.
@bw57928 ай бұрын
Thanks for the series. In the end, this is a truck. It is designed to be used as a truck. It's a truck that is actually tough and perfect for a construction site. Is this one of the coolest trucks ever released, yes, it is, but it is still just a manufactured product, and it will have flaws. The truly happy will figure out how to extract joy from the things they are blessed to have instead of constantly focusing on things that, and let's be real here, are far less important than almost everything else in your life. I would guess most people will spend far more time inside their cybertruck than staring at it from outside.

Barkeeper's Friend... yeah, called it. Next level up is wiping it off with pure ammonia cut with distilled water instead of windex. I'm not sure it's 'tarnish' you are wiping off though but just a fine layer of steel. It's basically sanding the metal lightly. The more you do it the closer to a polished finish it will get.

I’m sure the Banding you speak of on the doors is from welding the inside and outside panels of the door together.. look at video from sandy munro when he toured the factory. I’m sure the heat from welding has affected the Stainless steel.

If you could have just washed the barkeepers friend off with water it probably would have done the same thing and then just dry it. Why would you test somewhere without access to water? The black you are seeing is the gentle results of oxalic acid eating through hard water stains, grease, and other deposits you can’t see. You’re “passivating” the stainless steel, removing the free iron from the surface and getting a black reaction.

Maybe you should ask Tesla for a sheet of their stainless steel and let them know it's for testing the best solution to cleaning it and seeing it ages. A lot of people will be iffy of random products on their expensive new vehicle.

Knowing how OCD everyone is I’m sure this is not the last word. I’m still curious about protecting the SS after this cleaning process as there are many claims about clear treatments like Sheila Shine .. Everclear coatings etc. Kinda fun having something new to play with and figure out.

Nice video, thanks for sharing! I wonder if you can skip the windex by applying all the BKF and then taking it through the carwash?

Great discoveries. Never would I thought Cybertruck would want their trucks to look beat up and would be deliberately developing patina with peroxide/salts, through to even putting deliberate bullet dents in them.
@TeslaTimATL8 ай бұрын
you opened the door the wrong way. There is a lip that you can grab from inside of the door avoiding contact with the stainless steel. Look at how Lars opens the door on the Jay Leno video at the ~30 minute mark. Proper door opening will help with the fingerprint issue.
@shroomz4118 ай бұрын
Oxidation on this stainless steel is clearly a problem. That isn’t “Grime” you are picking up on the towels! It’s oxidation! These trucks are all gonna turn color over time. Without some type of topcoat, it’s inevitable!!!! Crazy they didn’t think of this for all the R&D time this thing took!!

❤ I think we all really appreciate the time and effort you’ve put into this. I’m honestly amazed and a bit disappointed that you did not try a rinseless wash. Not a waterless wash. Rinseless! I literally just cleaned my stainless steel fridge, range and dishwasher with DIY Details Rinseless wash today. Works on everything, glass, plastic, wheels, tires, interior etc. Also, you’ll definitely want a specific METAL ceramic coating (which DIY Detail also makes…as do other coating companies) which will bind to the stainless steel properly. Lastly Barkeeepers friend works best paired with a Melamine sponge - I use that combo for any heavy grit/burnt crud on stainless steel pots and pans works better than Barkeepers friend alone. Although to remove bugs I’d try presoaking with a rinseless and use a jersey bug scrubbing sponge first before trying the barkeepers friend. BTW (I think someone else in the comments mentioned) Stainless Steel is NOT (generally) porous. Thanks for all your testing! ❤

I tried No Rinse wash on mine (I have 8 cars in my collection that I keep clean with this), but Barkeepers Friend and Windex was a clear winner over it where my Cybertruck was concerned. Spots from sprinkler water did not come off with No Rinse but it did with Barkeepers Friend/Windex

Sounds like metal polish should work. The black residue is the same thing you get from metal polish. Metal polish followed by Windex. I'd recommend that. ALSO - Soft Scrub is basically the same chemical as BKF, and sometimes it is easier to find & cheaper. Thanks for the hard work you did here!

Hello, I have a large workshop and do a lot of restoration projects. I am at the top of the list for the CT and definitely liked the final video. I have a few questions: Did you also try using the Windex on the other applied coating products to see if it had the same effect on removing the orange color under the coating? Did the Windex remove all of the Bar Keeper's coating? This would put the steel back to the original with Just using Windex alone. I will be interested in the outcome of using a electric buffer with the Bar Keepers cleaner. then applying the Windex after. Good video coverage for all products shown.

When cleaning stainless steel cookware with BKF, there's a LOT of BKF residue to clean afterward with dish soap. Maybe the right order for heavy Cybertruck cleaning is: (1) BKF (2) normal car wash (3) Windex while drying, like some people using a detail spray while drying.
