Cycle Touring Alaska to Argentina, exploring Ensenada, and more of Baja California Mexico
In this episode, our cycle touring adventure from Alaska to Argentina takes an unexpected turn with an extended downtime in Ensenada. Making the most of our time in Ensenada, we explore the city and eat lots of street food and other tasty meals. There is a short trip back to California and we have the pleasure of watching the ceremonial start of the 2021 Baja 1000 race before leaving Ensenada and cycling further into Mexico and exploring Baja California.

I'm not sure if this is your first video of adding the map feature but I love it. I really enjoyed the information intermittent with the scenery and the added written stuff like the restaurant names.

Thanks again for the video. Appears all is going well in Mexico, minus the mechanical issue. Fortunately you will still close enough to San Diego. Enjoy and ride safe…Ted’s Trek

Hey there Ted! Sorry for the late reply! We've been busy getting our ride on here in Mexico. Mexico has been very good to us so far and we're really enjoying the ride here. As for my mechanical issue, yeah had I known it was going to take forever for my wheel to be delivered we would have taken the bus to San Diego and shipped it from there too. DHL is whacky with their shipping. The wheel made through customs and into San Diego the next day, but then it sat there for 4 days, then it took a flight to Cincinnati, Ohio and sat there for 2 days before being flown back to Sacramento, California (Cycle Monkey) for repairs. Anyway all good and we rolling now. Take care and happy cycling to you my friend. ~Ron

Hello Jan Jan! Cycling down Baja was a real pleasure and we would say 99% the drivers gave us plenty of room. We were more worried and had closer encounters cycling down the Pacific Coast Highway on this tour than in Baja. This is our second major tour and we've also done many shorter tours and we are not sure where you can cycle tour and not be around traffic. Take care and happy cycling! ~Ron & Petra

Is that a arkel handle bar bag you are using ? If it is , my question is how good of a job does it do of keeping your stuff dry ?
@PedalPowerTouring
@PedalPowerTouring 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Pedaling Thru, no sorry it is Ortlieb's handlebar bag and they do a great job at keeping our stuff dry. These are new that we replaced our original ones with just for this trip. Our original handlebar bags that we've used since 2008 and took around the world with us once and on countless other trips, started to show wear so we decided to get new ones for this trip. However, even our older ones worked great and we never once had any issues with our stuff getting wet. We carry our cameras up here, so we trust them fully. ~Ron

We've been enjoying watching your videos and following your progress. Do you have plans to come to the Yucatan and if I may ask, what animated map program do you use? Cheers Leslie & Rob

Hello Leslie and Rob (aka Tandem GoGo)!! Many thanks for following along and happy to hear from you. At the moment we're not exactly sure what our route will be over on the mainland. We have considered cycling to the Yucatan but we're just not 100% just yet. If we do, would you like for us to reach out to you? Absolutely, yes of course, all questions are welcomed and we try our best to answer them all. We recently started using Adobe After Effects for the animated maps, but I understand that you can also use DaVinci Resolve. Hope this helps and Happy New Years to you both and happy cycling! ~Ron & Petra

Been wanting to ask for more details about recommendations for brands or where to buy the folding sleeping mats you both have across the front cargo racks. I assume one of those would be advantageous to have to mitigate sleeping mat punctures. Thanks :)
@PedalPowerTouring
@PedalPowerTouring 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Zartintv! Thank you for your question and for following along. Please feel free to ask us anything and we'll do our best to answer. Yes those mats are Therm-A-Rest Z-Lite SOL Sleeping Pads and yes, that is exactly why we use them, to help prevent punctures to our air mats. We've been using this combination since ~2011, Z-lite as a base and then an air mat and so far (knock on wood) it has worked out perfectly. On our first world tour, from 2013 -2015 we had zero punctures and we slept on all types of terrain and so far no issues on this long trip. Also, the Z-lite comes in handy for the those quick little afternoon naps or even as a place to just sit. Hope this helps and as I mentioned please feel free to ask us anything and we'll do our best to answer you. Happy adventures! ~Ron & Petra

Hi, what "hub plate" is that? I've never seen something that mounts like that to the hub. Seems like, engineering wise. must be taking a lot of torque and stress to need six or so screws. More info on that would be welcome. Why do you have such a part?
@PedalPowerTouring
@PedalPowerTouring 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there Mark. It's called the "Axel Plate" according to parts diagram on Rohloff's website. There are are 5 screws that hold it to the hub and yeah I had two sheer on me. If you notice in the pictures one is missing and the other is still there but it's sheered off too. It is on the left side of the hub and the external shifting gearbox attaches to it and it requires a special dropout to slide into. And yeah I would say there is some torque to it because when the wheel is not mounted and you rotate the cog in direction of forward movement, this piece will rotate too and this is the reason for the special dropout to hold it in place. That's all I can tell you about it. Sorry. Maybe reach out to Cycle Monkey (Authorized Repair Facility) or directly to Rohloff and they can explain it better. Our hubs have over 20,000 miles on them and this is the first and so far only issue we've had. ~Ron
