Peter Egan, you are an inspiration. The way you write and talk about bikes and motorcycling has always inspired me. This from an Englishman. No one else has ever encapsulated the richness, beauty and romance of bikes in the way that you do. So down to earth too, thank you!

Really enjoyed this conversation. I am a french speaking Canadian from Montréal, Québec. I got my motorcycle license in 1985. Back then there was only one motorcycle magazine available for french speakers in Québec, that was Moto Journal. I was hungry for motorcycle knowledge and stories and started to buy Cycle, Cycle World and Motorcyclist magazine. I really enjoyed Peter Egan's stories and Kevin Cameron's very technical articles made me scratch my head many times with my limited knowledge of the english language. I became a subsciber of these mags and remained so until the very end. I am 58 now and currently ride a 2010 Victory Vision 8-Ball and an orange/purple 1993 Kawasaki ZX-11... I often think of these moto journalists and their stories when i ride. Greetings from Montréal, Québec. 🖖 👽 🇨🇦

I'm a working musician based in Austin Texas. I made custom luggage attachments for my Ducati Multistrada 950 that mount my bass and amp to my bike like panniers. I ride it to gigs and also on tour to avoid long long hours in a white Econoline. I too have noticed there is a strong correlation between musicians and motorcyclists. I'm always striking up conversations with musicians back stage about what and where we ride. It's so interesting to hear Mark and Peter's musical involvement too. I wonder if it's just something in the way our brains are wired.

Signed up for Publisher's Clearinghouse, putting down Cycle and Cycle World. This is how these magazines ended up on my doorstep. Remember receiving the last Cycle magazine, and happily learned Kevin Cameron was moving to Cycle World with Peter Egan. Was functional illiterate at the age these writers showed up on my doorstep, their inspiration has led to a trilogy written by yours truly. There is racing in this story, and absolutely would not have accomplished this without the knowledge and writing skills you both shared with the world. Those magazines where read cover to cover for years, my gratitude to you both.

Concerning the effects of the wind on an engine, I have an addition. My 99 Monster 900, one of the last carbureted models, after adding mods to the airbox and exhaust would consistently lose horsepower on a certain road. It was a divided highway that always had a cross wind in about a quarter mile zone. My thinking is it was causing a suction effect under the fuel tank where the airbox was. It ran fine in all other conditions, made 71hp on a dyno. I put 43,000 miles on it an it was one of my favorite bikes with only a Moto Guzzi Breva 1100 being my favorite . Great conversation guys!

The trombone is the loudest unamplified instrument. I think it goes back to the day when they were straight and used to announce the comings and goings of important people. It is one of the hardest instruments to play as there is a coordination of lip embouchure and slide position. A valved instrument has one part taken care of. Maniacal Four used an electronic mute and that combined with the infinite position of the slide made some impressive guitar-sounding glissando solos. I used the instrument case as a stool as I took the bus all through grade schools. We never had a tuba player. The largest instrument we had was a bari sax. He only took it home to practice on weekends - which annoyed the teacher.

I first read Peter Egan in the seventies in Road and Track. The topic was things he learned while working on British sports cars. One of his observations was what one could find under British sports car carpets. Items included an oxidized penny matted with carpet padding , a buss fuse tin, and a ball point pen ink cartridge with a rusty spring. Having owned a TR6 at the time, I could instantly relate. Been an Egan fan ever since.

I bought a Honda S-90 in 1968, a few months before going to Viet Nam. It was my first motorcycle. Today, I have a winterized Yamaha V-Star sitting in the shed, waiting for another Spring. There were many motors between the first and [probably] the last, and I enjoyed every one of them. One of my favorites was a single-cylinder 250cc Honda that looked like a 3/4 scale British café racer. I'm sometimes amazed at the shenanigans I got up to, and got away with, on that bike.
