Күн бұрын

We cycle across Java, Bali and Lombok for 6 weeks, as part of our bike touring adventure around the world.
Starting out by navigating the traffic and laneways of Jakarta, we ride across northern Java, exploring new foods and taking in the volcano lined landscapes, on our way towards Bali.
We cross Bali from north to south, experiencing the Hindu Galangal festival on our way, which sees the streets decorated in offerings to the gods, in a celebration of good over evil.
We pass through the Gili islands on our way to Lombok, where we ride a lap of this beautiful island during the Muslim month of Ramadan.
This is the final part of our trip through Asia as we make our way around the world on our bicycles. If you have any questions about our time here please ask us in the comments section.

Thank you and that's so nice to hear! Glad you're enjoying the videos. To put them on planes we box them up in bike boxes we get from local bike shops, the ones that bikes come in when they are newly delivered. You'll have to take your front wheel and handle bars off to fit them in, and check the weight allowance for the airline you're flying. Some have better limits/are cheaper then others to add oversize baggage. Enjoy planning your first adventure!

It's pretty crazy in Jakarta, busy but didn't seem dangerous because quite slow. And actually through the whole country, when your off the main highways, even if it's busy it's never too fast and everyone looks out for you. We never felt unsafe there

Thank you for this. I am planning in 2025. Can/did you wild camp? How much in USD can you get by for a day?
@weridebikesplaces
@weridebikesplaces 3 ай бұрын
Wild camping here would be extremely difficult. Java is one of the most densely populated places in the world, with very little spare space.. it's also extremely hot and humid, which would make camping pretty uncomfortable. Rooms are very cheap, and youl be looking forward to an air con room at the end of the day. You could get by on $25 USD a day, including a room, most of the time. Food is super cheap, delicious, and available everywhere, usually a couple dollars per meal. Have a little search on Google maps for hotels in the remote areas, prices should be around $10-$15 a night

Can I know what kind of bicycle that allows us to bring baggage too?
@weridebikesplaces
@weridebikesplaces 3 ай бұрын
Hi! The bags are attached to racks, that are attached to the bikes. Almost all bikes have attachment points for rear racks, and touring bikes, like ours which are surly, and Kona, have attachment points for front racks. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions about bike choice 😁
@SamanthaMeliora

@@weridebikesplaces Ah, so any bike will suffice as long as it has racks and strong enough to hold our baggage?
@weridebikesplaces
@weridebikesplaces 3 ай бұрын
@@SamanthaMeliora yes! Whatever bike your comfortable on will be the best. I'd recommend something with wider tyres than a typical road bike though, more like a mountain bike, to help cope with the extra weight

How did you like cycling on Java in terms of traffic and nature compared to the other islands you’ve been cycling ? Would you recommend it. A few years ago I’ve been cycling around Bali, Lombok and Subawa for 2 months . We might think about adding Indonesia to our lists of countries we’d like to cycle through starting in August .

We really liked it, but I would probably take a more inland route next time. The traffic was never that bad, it's slow moving, and there's so many roads to choose from, you can take as busy or as small a road as you like. The scenery was really nice, with lots of volcanos, but would have been better further inland from the coast I think. The beaches werent very good, from what we saw of them. There were some sections along the north that were a bit boring, but probably only because it's such a big island.. the food was amazing though, because of the big population there's just food everywhere, some of the best and cheapest food we've had anywhere

And one more question 🙃 how do you navigate ? Do you have a bike computer or just using your smartphone?
@weridebikesplaces
@weridebikesplaces 7 ай бұрын
We just use our phones. And use the app komoot. It's so much easier as you can re route straight away whenever you need to, which is pretty often in places like java due roads being impassable for whatever reason

That's a tough one! Definitely somewhere on Java, probably just one of the little shops in the small towns whose names I forget. So many good ones with vendors who were always happy to see us. We realised the key was to get there as soon as they open to get it while it's fresh 🤤😁
