From Oslo to KL must have been a culture shock! I recognised so much from KL and Melaka, a lot has changed, but also a lot has stayed the same. The street food culture is big in Malaysia (and most of Asia). Enjoying moving along with you, many thanks!

Welcome to Malaysia. As a Malaysian myself I have a respect for bikepackers like you two. It is not easy to do it you will certainly face lots of obstacles and hardships throughout your journey, but it's totally worth it. I know the feeling because I had experienced it while I was bicycle touring around Tromso, Norway. And I will return to do it this coming September through October in Iceland. This kind of video is inspiring.

Don't worry about palm plantations, it is the best oil-to-area covered ratio. Not only that, it has large canopies to cool us here compared to other oil-plant options. The thing about huge deforestation is that we are supplying it worldwide, thus with a small country like us, you can see palm plantations everywhere. The orang-utan that others are so concerned about is actually being taken care of very very neat, good. There are many sanctuaries and huge reserved forests just for them. we are a developing country, so EIA is just part of our practice. Good video recording, very happy to have you guys here though not really met you. You always looked fresh, and sweatless. I will get sunburned immediately if ride like you. (Smile)

Just happened to be attracted by your channel because you two were riding on a very familiar country road which I knew well to Lukut. Welcome to Malaysia. Will be glad to be your host if you happen to be in Seremban again. BTW, Pls don't link oil palm plantation to unscrupulous deforestation activities in Malaysia. There are many positive articles about palm oil industry and forest management in Malaysia. Ride safe and enjoy your stays here.

Awesome ride from KL to Johor. I plan on doing a ride to Singapore from Bangkok in the next few years and cannot wait to take that journey. Did you all camp or do hotels and air b&b?
@RollingExistence Жыл бұрын
We only camped once in Malaysia, and that was in a pretty remote stretch of mountains where there weren't any hotels or towns. Hotels are generally frequent and cheap, and a shower and AC were hard to turn down after a long day. Hope you have a fantastic tour!

I am new to your channel and love your style of cycle touring. As an Ecology graduate of the early 2000's we were discussing palm oil and its impact back then. Palm oil is in absolutely everything and I'm only half joking about that, lipstick to vegetable stock and everywhere in between contains palm oil. Unless humanity changes drastically then palm oil is here to stay, the key is to buy sustainably if you can't avoid it. The flip side, like you mentioned is that it is big business and provides a lot of employment and income for local communities. Monocultures are everywhere, that's modern farming, that's what we humans do! Only knowledge can change it.

KL to Johor will give you one kind of scenery. If you cycle north from KL to Penang for example, your experience shall be different. Same goes for a trip from KL to Kuantan in Pahang then to Terengganu along the beach. There are mountains and paddy fields and beautiful beaches. It will be sad if you end your trip until you reach Singapore 😢

From Singapore we rode up the east coast to Terengganu and then over the mountains to Penang, then up to Thailand through Kedah and Perlis. We really enjoyed the cycling further north in Malaysia - the mountains and paddy fields were wonderful!

After touring round Australia we settled in the Far North Tropics. You sort of acclimatize a bit, but never fully - If you pass this way you can come round and use our air con! 😅 How do you guys go about booking hotels? Do you use an app or website or just turn up to the first one you find?
@RollingExistence Жыл бұрын
Jenny was pretty close to utilizing the fire approach 😂 And we would usually search for hotels on Agoda around midday when we had a good idea of how far we'd be going. In bigger cities it was just easier to decide on a hotel online, but in smaller towns we'd sometimes just show up and that worked out fine too.

You going to have a wonderful experience. Most of West Malaysia are still green and beautiful with small towns and villages here and there to resupply for your journey. If you are a nature lover, this journey going to be memorable. However, for security reasons, you should avoid backroads as we still have a lot of illegal immigrants and some shaddy characters in Malaysia (often using the backroads to avoid authorities). Stick to the highways (the motorcycle lanes are best and safer route especially at night).

In this video we were staying in hotels every night, so we were walking around with the bicycles safely locked up in the hotel. When we are camping like in our videos from Europe it's much harder to explore on foot. Sometimes we will take turns, one of us will stay with the bikes while the other walks around. If we want to go on a hike we will find a place to hide the bicycles in some trees and lock them up.
