Yes, F. Scott Fitzgerald mentions the roadway in his novel The Great Gatsby. Gatsby and Daisy drive on it going east to Queens to Myrtle's apartment in Corona, Queens. They pass by Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, which back in the 1920s was a sprawling ash dump with mounds of ash 100 feet high, "The Valley of Ashes."

I've biked and live and have lived along sections of this ride for much of my life, and have never come across a video this long and comprehensive that covers it. It's literally a ride through much of my life, so thanks for this. I ride along the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway all the time, in fact just yesterday. Btw, that section of it just after you passed under the Clearview Expressway (though that dark and creepy underpath that's one of my least favorite places to ride in NYC), where Mary Jane mentions that you can still hear road noise, is kind of ironic, because the man who was the main force behind the construction of that road, which was actually the Clearview Expressway, was also the main reason that the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway became obsolete, because it was too narrow and couldn't handle the demands of modern traffic, that exploded in the 20's and beyond after WWI and the mass manufacture of cars began. Thankfully parts of it have been preserved for cyclists, runners and walkers, so all wasn't lost. Incidentally, there's a pretty substantial and impressive network of mountain bike and running trails just off of the Vanderbilt, in nearby Cunningham and Alley Pond Parks, including several BMX stunt areas. They're too rugged for road bikes though so I wouldn't suggest trying it with your bikes.
@geniustomato9514 жыл бұрын
All that distance on one gear? Impressive! Vanterbilt motor parkway is a secret gem in Queens. The history behind it equally just as interesting as you are literally taking a ride through history on it. Thanks for the upload!

I was hoping against hope you would make it to my old neighborhood (Alley Pond Park) on the bike path. It ran right behind the apartments where I lived and I walked on it many times, on the way into the Park. Looks like that section if the path you were on ended near Francis Lewis Blvd.

First time I've seen the Unisphere with the fountains in person my heart almost stopped I had to look away. When I researched NYC 1964 World Fair for some reason the Unisphere did not look sooooooooooooo tall. This video does give it justice it's larger then it looks.

This is in response to her question on LaGuardia Airport. There are some international flights out of LaGuardia but these destinations have United States pre clearance. So Canada, Nassau Bahamas, Bermuda and Aruba you go through U.S immigration and customs at those destinations before boarding your flight to the United States. Upon arrival you simply claim your bags and leave without any additional immigration or customs formalities.

42:24 Mary Jane has a point because when I used to drive on Onts ario's Highway's at the speed limited my kids would get upset at me saying that when I'm driving in the middle or far left side I need to speed up. Just because all the others cars were going passed the speed limit which I hate because you can get into a car accident or pulled over by the police. I would say, where does it say to go faster? There answer was, you just know, which is not a good reason for me to go faster. Is it the same way in NYC?

In SF, we have cycling rules and etiquette to help keep each other safe. Most of us follow these but there are always a few scafflaws! We say "slowing" so those behind us know to slow down. We call and use hand signals when we stop, left turn, and right turn. We point to debris on the road so others can avoid them. What about NY cyclists?
@waynepond87483 жыл бұрын
In Queens where I live there is less congestion than in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Many times on my bike rides there are not a lot of other cyclists. There is also a more suburban feel to many neighborhoods in Queens so to me it’s more laid back than if I bike ride in Manhattan. There it’s lots of other cyclists so communicating your intentions to other riders as well as being on high alert of other riders is the norm
