Greek Cypriot historian Rolandos Katsiaounis talks about the day in 1974 that his parents, refugees from Famagusta, fled the Turkish-occupied village of Varosi. After Rolandos' father, Loizos, and some other Greek Cypriots were taken hostage by Turkish invading troops, Loizos was rescued by his Turkish Cypriot friend. Filmed in Nicosia, July 22, 2009.

45 years on, remembering the refugees, the missing and all those we lost in 1974. Remembering all those we've lost before and since. One Cyprus.

Cyprus would still be united if Makarios and and nikos Sampson had not acted the way they did. Greeks and Turk in Cyprus are true brothers torn apart by silly politics

I want to add a few comments on this moving video that can hold a grain of hope for all of us based upon an important and precious recollection of a shared humanity. I knew Rolandos Katsiaounis. He was a very decent individual and a serious historian. He was a devoted son to his parents, genuine, warm, without any pretences, and I suspect rather lonely because his work was not fully appreciated. He has passed away now, before his time, regrettably, and had he been still with us he would have had the opportunity to contribute more to the understanding of Cyprus's history. Thank you very much for posting this video both for the very important content that deserves to be remembered in order to bring people together, and also for leaving a video record of a very decent individual and respected scholar, very sadly missed.

Dear Peyiotis, I'm overwhelmed with sadness as I write in response to your beautiful comment. This video continues to get the most views on this channel, by the hundreds, since the day it was published. A small minority of commenters have called it a lie and propaganda because they can't stand the reality of brotherhood across bloodlines. I cherish every view for spreading this story, but also for spreading the essence of Rolandos, in whatever unquantifiable form. Because these things can't be measured. I'm sad because of the loneliness you mentioned. Would that it weren't so. For sure, the appreciation of friends like you, of Rolandos and his work, brought him satisfaction and joy. I saw him that day with his mother; I saw the man you describe. I heard Rolandos talk at a conference at the Home for Cooperation, maybe a year before he died. I realized then what an educated man he was, because I read his qualifications in the event program; and because of what he was saying. He spoke about the desire for enosis in the 1950s, and about how that desire, along with the push to make it a reality, was the right of Greek Cypriots. He mentioned AKEL's support for enosis at the time, and he said that this desire and push for enosis back then should never have been vilified. Hearing him talk, I looked at an idea I've never liked in a different light, because I knew that if Rolandos was expressing that idea, there must be other angles, other considerations, other benefits (for all Cypriots) that hadn't been properly understood by me and others. (My own father, an AKEL man who fled Cyprus in the 1950s after being put on EOKA's infamous deathlist, supported enosis as a young Cypriot.) Hearing Rolandos in that moment, I felt the same way I do when Noam Chomsky says something that contrasts with "what's expected of him," or, at least, with "accepted leftist doctrine." I pause, I reevaluate, I defer. Why I'm saying this: It's nothing to do with whether Cyprus should have joined with Greece. It's about the truth, earnestness and genuineness that sprang from Rolandos, along with other magnetic elements I can't find words for. He had the stuff required of being taken seriously. He finished talking and we met at the H4C coffee machine. I wanted to tell him that his video was on my channel, that people were watching it, that I could send him a copy. I couldn't do it. Instead, with less than a cup's worth of coffee left in the flask, I offered it to him, but he declined and let me have it.

Dear Georgia, thank you for your message of comradeship. Everything good depends on it. I'm so sorry for what your relative went through. Please pass my warmest wishes on to him for all the happiness and relief going forward. The extreme nationalists caused such ongoing hurt and chaos for all of us. mr.fikri is an excellent human example of what could being accomplished but of course contradictory to what actually happened that catastrophic moment of the committed atrocities by both sides of course has to be build a better tomorrow therefore to allow the future generations to live in peace & harmony together side by side & I'm of the opinion that if Turkish army withdrawal some day in the future take place which I believe it will be done then a fine day all people can master their own decisions to the point to reached a better understanding & advance up & reached some kind of unity since there is enough land for all to build a better future !!! I believe that everything is possible if both people seriously attended it !!!

:) Isn't it interesting that Greeks and Turks (only live in Anatolia) still do not aware that both of those nations are brothers and sisters genetically...! And ancestors of almost 90% of today's Anatolian Turks were originally Greek and changed their religion (from Christian to Muslim) and their language (from Greek language to Turkish language) during last 500 years...! Wake Up!! Look at mirror!!! Or show must go on?..:)))
