A couple of weeks before presidential elections in the Republic of Cyprus, we asked Turkish Cypriots in Nicosia who they support.

Well this is our country lol. They have to deal with the fact that the majority is Greek. Imagine if all of a sudden black people of America decided they no longer wanted to be ruled by a "white" government and they declared independence on US soil. They had voting rights and to be honest they were quite privileged for a mere 18% of the population. You can't just build a country on a country, it's illegal. But what's even more problematic is that they don't actually have their own government. They are not autonomous and they are not independent. Occupied Cyprus is 100% depended on Turkey for everything. Army, imports, economy, even electricity, water, food. Is this the "freedom" and democracy they seek? Democracy made in Turkey? Are you telling me that a westernized, true democracy and true independence with freedom of speech and expression rights in the actual government was is so bad that they 'd preferred to be controlled by Turkey?

re giorgos there are over 200.000 Turkish cypriots lives in england, 50.000 in other countries and over 500.000 turkish cypriots lives in turkey. remember cyprus was under ottoman rule almost 400 years!!! and when ottomans rented cyprus to British in late 1880's many ottomans immigrated back to turkey.. than population of cyprus changed. cyprus was never greek island. it was Byzantines for 800 years but as you know byzantines weren't greeks they were greek speaking Europeans and anatolians.. and remember ottomans took the island from Venetians not from greeks ;)

my friend TC has their own parliament president ministers councils etc...and they are all Turkish Cypriots!!and they speak for turkish Cypriots!! they are not from turkey! same as any developed modern country. yes turkey supports TC but we TC pays them back...they dont send anything to TC's free. we do business between us. you must understand that TC will never accept to be ruled by GC as a minority!!! we dont trust GC!! do you know the history? Oh I forgot you guys like making your own version of history. First off, provide evidence for the stats you just gave. Second, provide evidence for your claim that Byzantines weren't Greek, when they were speaking Greek, had Greek names, Greek religion, Greek culture and most importantly, claimed to be Greek. Cyprus has been Greek since the Bronze age you moron. We call it Bronze age for the pottery that was used at the time. And that pottery is strongly Mycenaean-influenced, giving hard evidence that at the time Greeks undoubtedly inhabited the island. The concept of a Turk wasn't even a thing until a few millenniums later. Cyprus had a lot of tribes conquering it, however there's nothing to suggest that the conquerors actually slaughtered every single citizen in order for them to NOT be Greek. On the contrary, the island kept its connections to Greek cities throughout the years with a lot of archaeological findings from each age confirming that. So yeah, a lot of conquerors came, a lot of them left, Turkey is just one of them. At least that's what history suggests... real history, with real evidence and real facts. But there's not even a need for archaeological evidence. Just take the family tree of most Cypriots, actual Cypriots. Families older than the ottoman empire.

I think this is true (I am from a Greek family of Istanbul), and I have a long a** theory about this, there it goes if you're interested. Turkey is one of the most ethnically weird countries in the world. Ottomans invaded lots of Slavic countries. And lots of people from Anatolia were sent to those Slavic regions to 'Turkify' those Balkan lands. As soon as conversion to Islam happened whether due to marriage or to avoid heavy taxation, they became 'Turks'. A lot of those families which were ethnically more Slavic than anything else(like the Ottoman Royals) were moved to western Turkey after WW1, because somebody married a muslim at one point and they were branded as 'Turk'. Greeks on the other hand weren't relocated as much as Turks under the Ottoman Empire and had a tendency to marry within themselves, as they had a really large diaspora, and more ethnically aware than Turks. (The Turkish identity only arrived after the secular Republic, before than it was all about Islam) Majority of today's Turkey is a mixture of Greek/Slavic/Persian/Arab/Kurdish/Armenian/Eastern Asian. It really depends on where your family was from pre-Turkish Republic. In fact if you go to Istanbul (where 1/5th of Turks live) and someone asks you where are you from? They won't accept Istanbul as an answer, because there was literally only a handful of Turks living in Istanbul until 1922, despite being the Empire's capital. That question actually means, what part of the Ottoman Empire you were from. I've been to Greece at least 6 times, as I have family there, I was shocked how dark they really are as a country. Darker than those originate from Western Turkey (it is all mixed now in Turkey too, very few ethnic towns left mostly in North, ethnic Greeks and Georgians and Armenians that hate Greece and Armenia because they are muslims and will deny that they are :) ). So to answer your question : I can only assume it's the Slavic effect the Greece never had. DNA test on Greek people also shows some North African effect, which is not there for Turks. On the other hand if you look at the Turkish that were from to Eastern Turkey(Turks in Central and Northern Europe mostly fall into this category) they are a lot more Semitic looking than Greeks.

Excuse me but why do you think that a federation also means turkish troops on the island? Federation without turkish or greek troops, that's a solution. If you want any foreign powers on the island don't call it a solution, simple as that. We can have a transitional time where some troops remain, but the final product should be a completely independent island, 0 troops from any country. Otherwise we cannot call ourselves a normal country nor that we "solved" the problem.

It's all quite simple: Cyprus is historically Greek. Turkish forces in Cyprus are illegal and have no right to be there. Imagine if a few million Germans settled in Constantinople/Istanbul and then Germany decided to invade Turkey to protect the rights of their citizens. Would this be acceptable? This is what happened in Cyprus in 1974. There was no problem with the Turkish Cypriots. Of course the UK and USA bear the majority of the blame because they not only refused to stop Turkey, but encouraged the Turks to invade. Kissinger prevented the US sixth fleet from intervening.

What a moronic thing to say. Greeks look more Asian than Turks? Greece is a country in south eastern Europe therefore we are European. Greeks look more similar to Italians and Spaniards. Turks on the other hand who are darker are generally nomadic people who originated from central Asia (also known as the Seljuks). Open a history book and maybe do some research on genetics before replying to me with such stupid garbage. Also it is not "racism" but facts. Also Cyprus has been Greek Byzantine long before Turks arrived in Anatolia. There is no such thing as "Turkish Cypriots" because they are not native to Cyprus. Simple. If anything they are Greek Cypriots who are Muslim and have been raised as Turks with fake "Turkish" identity.
