My teacher, a polyglot, once said, that translating Japanese language to Czech is incredibly hard, becuse you have to modify everything they say. Simply becasue Czech language is like, unable to express the sheer positivity and politeness of the Japanese. Literal translation sounds ironic and sarcastic and really stupid :D

let me correct you a little bit - there are 3 Slavic lenguage groups: West Slavic: Czech, Slovak, Polish (and Upper and Lower Lausitz Serbian on the territory of today Germany - dying out unfortunatelly because of permanent germanisation..) The Czechs do not understand to the Polish - fun fact: the accent of polish lenguage sounds extremly homosexual to all Czechs .. South Slavic: Slovenian, Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian, Macedonian, Monte Negro and Bulgarian East Slavic: Belarussian, Ukrainian, Russian There has been a big Slavic territories with original Slavic population that has been colonised by Germany (all on the right from Elbe river) , Austria (east Austria), Hungary (west border area), Romania (south and east) and Moldova (east part) - and those people has been forced to use a lenguages that is not original to them, even more from different lenguage group

Yes, Czech has 7 cases. The horror for the foreigner comes when he realizes that in addition to the singular and plural (2 x 7 = 14 "cases"), there is the masculine gender with 6 patterns, the feminine gender with 4 patterns, and the neuter gender with 4 patterns, i.e. a total of 14 patterns for the declension of nouns. This makes 14 x 14 = 196 endings for nouns alone. Some of the endings are repeated, but the Czech speaker still needs to know their position. Adjectives are declined in a similar way. Let's leave verbs aside, they are even more complicated than nouns with their prefixes and suffixes.

Let's just be clear here. There is no way to learn czech language to any kind of perfection unless you were born here. Look at me, I was born here and my czech still sucks. I still love it though because it's so creative and playful language. :-) Anyway your prague's accent is top notch. It's probably the worst accent there is in czech rep. because it's so dull and lazy. Just look at "No to si děláááááš prdeL!" or "Hele, jako víííš, co..". Still, Ostrava's accent and dictionary is much worse. I'm dying here. Some young kids (my students) have like a 300 words vocabulary. It's horrible. They cannot express any complex thought, not that they have any. :)
@Pidalin4 жыл бұрын
There is no Prague accent, people in Prague are speaking same as in whole Bohemia, except some really weird regional things. Ofcourse there are some differences between Prague and Plzeň, but everywhere they are saying bejt and such things. Problem with Prague is that most of people are not borned there so some visitor sometimes wrongly thing he know how "prague czech" sounds, but it's mostly wrong. For example native Praguer would not say "přijdu dýl" like someone from Pilsen, but Moravians very often think people in Prague are speaking like that. Also with that long speaking it's very exaggerated because they are confusing long and short vowels so when someone from Prague is saying long vowel where it shoudl be, someone from Ostrava think he is speaking very longly, but it's just how it should sound. But people from Pilsen are sometimes really speaking longly. Also there is big difference between man and woman pronunciation and you can hear who is influenced by other languages or dialects, I don't know much Praguers who are really speaking like real Praguer, you know, like "du koupit sejra rejži vole" etc.. :-D Maybe there can be even some differences between Prague parts, I am borned in Vršovice and that long speaking like "dobrý dééén" is killing my ears too, I think mostle women are speaking like that, I don't know why. But what is the most funny thing for me is that what people (also mostly woman) are doing in Moravia, like that last letter in word is much more loud than rest of word so it sounds long to me, that's funny when they are saying we are speaking longly. For example when moravian woman want's to say koníci, I hear "konicíÍÍÍ" and that last í sounds completely different than rest of the word. :-D Also their zme instead of (j)sme or gvůli instead of kvůli is no better than bejt or sejra. Or "nabourané auta," how is it better than "nabouraný auta" in Prague when none of that is correct formal Czech? When we were near to Ostrava on vacation, they even didn't recognized we are from Prague, because we arraved in car with plate from some village near Poděbrady. They even asked from what village we are. So when they see real Praguers, they even don't notice that. :-D

I really learned about declensions when studying Latin, wow. Of course, we do technically have all these cases in English, but we just use the same word form for all of them! I hear that English is easy for non-English speakers to learn, except, of course, for its highly irregular spelling. Most languages tend to drop unpronounced letters as they fall out of the vocal use, but English, strangely, often doesn’t, leading to spellings like knight, thorough, etc.

How fun that you did this video on language, it’s one of my interests, as you can tell from my previous comments trying to place, very unsuccessfully, your English accent! I have a horrible, flattish native-Californian accent. I would love to see some videos on Dutchwomen’s fashion and style! California is always at least a year behind Euro-style.

@MacGyver5AF4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lenny, oh my, this video melted my heart and somehow made me sad as well... I am native czech speaker and your pronounciation is superb. As far as isolated words go, you are definitely better than Czech prime minister, who comes from Slovakia and doesn't pay enough attention to his czech. He speaks czechoslovakially, WHICH IS UTTERLY ANNOYING! So, there are two examples and one conclusion from me. [It only applies if you want to resurrect your czech, which I highly recommend!] Example Nr. 1: There is a guy, his name is Gavin Roy, he lives in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA and he learns himself a czech for three and half year and he has made an impressive progression. He speaks also spanish and brazilian portugese, but that didn't help him at all... So, your starting position is not "absolute zero" like in his case, so you can get your "rusty wheels of czech" moving easily! :) Example Nr. 2: His royal highness Norodom Sihamoni, the King of Cambodia, is the only monarch in the world, who speaks fluently czech. He studied here from elementary school till the high school of arts ... So he is from the other half of the planet and he did it! So can you! Conclusion: I think it would be sad, if your czech would have to stay dormant for the rest of your life. I don't know what do you do for living or if you have any opportunities to make business trips / travels to the Czech republic, but if you do you can make your czech better. I think the best opportunity for you, czech-wise, is some form of cooperation with Czech embassy in Netherlands or with Dutch embassy in the Czech Republic :-) And the last paragraph from me, short about COVID pandemic - closely watch, what has happened or happens in the Czech republic regarding the "second wave of Covid", it can provide you information and let's say from 14 to 21 days of "headstart". Sir Mac P.S. My supostions (instead of questions) - your favourite czech meal would be "smažený sýr" (colloquially "smažák"), and I assume you like, if have you ever tasted, "tatarská omáčka". I know you love Becherovka, and I assume you like czech stout beer, my suposition is Krušovice Černé ...

As a czech the worst is if it is something people have to repeat very often, like in a shop or maybe castle guides and stuff like that. They do start to prolong the words and it does sound weird. I am always happy when a castle guide doesn´t sound like that. It´s so much more pleasant to listen to.

You have amazing Ř!!!!!! Well done.... It is interresting the way you hear our language, because for us Czech people the most flat sounding variation of the czech language is from northern part of Moravia - Ostrava city and suroundings. it is really flat:)))) And some people from that place even call the people from prague "Spěváčci" - the singers, because our dialekt sounds to tham like we sing the language. But there are differences. South of Moravia they sing to me the most... I guess.

Hello Lenny, why so many Dutch people - and you in particular - are so excellent and capable in foreigner languages? Your Czech pronunciation is close to perfect! In my experience, many Dutch speakers can correctly emulate not only those notoriously difficult Czech sounds as _ř, č, š,_ ... but also the _ch_ sound - which is typically so difficult for many English speakers. Your story how you passed an intensive course of _Čeština_ reminds me my intensive summer course of Nihongo once in Japan - and my feelings afterwards (and now - when forgetting most of my Japanese...). Yes - when speaking Czech we are not "singing" that much as in English and some other languages. It is mostly because those tricky 7 falls provide some reward on another level: E.g., a very flexible word order in a Czech sentence and some special capability to express easily those features which English (etc.) handle by "singing". So, Czech language is particularly efficient for poetry... Anyway, with much sympathy - greetings from Brno - Aleš.

Its also strange that for lot of czech people is easier to learn german than russian, maybe its because historicaly czechs and germans are so close and 100 ago we were bilinqual. So even russian languayge has some simmilar words, grammaticaly is czech closer to german than to russian i would say. Also pronountiation of german words is not that big problem for czechs. :)
