in the immortal words of Jocat: “Seriously, with how versatile and independently strong you can build a cleric, you can make a party of purely priests, call it the A-men, and burst down Tiamat’s door, demanding her lunch money. And she would just build her toilet to give herself swirlies so she wouldn’t have to endure the kind of bullying you were about to give her.”

Cleric is one of the few classes with Paladin and maybe Warlock where you can realistically have a full party made from entirely variations of this class and it would still kind of mechanically function (though I'll say that none is as broken as a party made 100% of Rogue in a social/mystery centric campaign, like holy shit do half of these subclasses force you to consider very carefully or else they will break the campaign, so imagine having both Sherlock Holmes, Agent 47, Inspector Gadget and a ghost whisperer walk into your intrigue)

Thank you for acknowledging the Grave Domain as one of the BEST subclasses in the game! One of my go-to one shot/campaign characters is a grave domain cleric themed around the Hispanic culture of death and the Day of the Dead. His deity is a goddess of life and joy and his whole philosophy is “live your life to the fullest; live a life to be remembered”! He’s a chad on the battlefield and an unwavering source of optimism, comfort, and hope to his party members!! ^w^

Clerics are my favorite class too! In one campaign I play a twilight cleric who is a doctor by trade (also homebrew background that just gives expert in medicine and proficiency in herbalism and alchemy kits). He is a devout follower of Illmater, despite the fact that he is also a vampire. Honestly I think Mercedes would be a great antagonist to him, as she stands for everything he and his God is against. Of course she would still be second to his vampire sire

Yeah gonna be honest Mercedes is very suspiciously the "Baby punching villain" trope, where a villain is actually the good guy but has a dumb caveat that invalidates what they stand for. And thus whatever good points they have are never addressed by the (usually more privelaged) heroes. Examples of this are Killmonger (MCU), Sylas (LoL), Riddler (The Batman), Butterflies (Peacemaker), etc... Gonna be honest as much as I love the content the implications of this trope and Mercedes being "evil" are really disappointing. Like this is just a DnD character concept and not some high budget film that'll influence society or anything so it isn't a big deal, but the trope is still just really dumb and problematic that I just hate seeing all the dang time. Standing up to oppression and actually doing what's necessary to root out said oppression is NOT EVIL.

I love Selune and making my characters look up to the stars a lot. So when I saw Twilight Domain 👀 And Twilight Domain is making the cleric a little bit of sneaky paladin (just put them into boots of elvenkind). Guidance being like sprinkling allies with moondust is awesome. That 300 ft of darkvision driving GM crazy, Twilight Sanctuary keeping the party alive. I just love everything about this subclass, it's the most diverse as well. You can play it like a paladin, with all the auras and channel divinity standing always in the middle. You can play it more sneaky with all advantages and passive abilities activating in the darkness. You can play as just a buffer/debuffer. You can play as regular healer. Or... ditch the shield and take glave/halberd instead and play a the reaper.

Recently made a multiclassed Warlock Grave cleric with an Undead patron. Now, she's not some edgy sad brooding character, she's actually a very bubbly young woman with a very nice demeanor and great listening ability! That's because she comes from a family of morticians, her father being the owner of the family business. Which is precisely why she doesn't like the undead, because she believes that what is dead should be able to rest in peace, and she's really not fond of the local Necromancy students coming to their graveyard to find corpses to experiment on. She left her home to seek adventure when she met with a lost ghost in the graveyard while she was making her rounds fixing graves and refreshing flowers, as well as checking for signs of intrusing. The ghost didn't remember anything from his previous life, and didn't even know his own name, only that a nearby medallion used to be very important to him. So, being the serviceable young lady she is, she offered to help him find his memory and identity to help him leave to the other side. They made a pact, and the ghost helps her as well as he can. Her parents didn't see it as evil play, the terms of the pact were clear, and, as former adventurers themselves (her dad was a grave cleric himself, coming from that family of morticians and stopped adventuring when his own father retired, and her mum was a sorceress, and they were part of the same party), they were in fact happy she would go on an adventure on her own before she would have to take on the family business. They helped her prepare her backpack, gave her a sending stone and some paper and ink, and there she left, with her ghost in tow seeking for adventure. I found it funny to think that she didn't inherit her mother's magic, but still received some abilities, such as seeing and talking to ghosts, and though she has a very nasty scar on her left eye, it was merely an accident when she was a child. Now she does all she can to defend life and help the undead, all the while getting boosts from her ghost patron. ^^ And I love her!!

Mercedes reminded me of a cleric character concept I had and a hypothetical scene I imagined for them. The idea was a lizardfolk that plays into the lore of “no compassion true neutral completely amoral” that lizardfolks have. They don’t care about people, only prioritize their own survival, but they’re smart and they realize that they can grow stronger and be surrounded by strong allies by becoming an adventurer. They want to have their party prioritize keeping them alive, so the obvious solution is become the healer, everyone knows that you keep the healer alive no matter what, so they became a cleric (also getting a free ticket into heaven when they eventually do die makes the deal all the sweeter). Part of making sure their party wants to keep them alive is also winning their affection, so they’re super nice and friendly because that makes them likable which means people care enough to keep them safe. They keep an innocent act that they’d almost never break since even if it seems beneficial in the moment to go full heartless cruel/betrayal mode they know that in the long run never giving their party a reason to see them as a bad guy is the best decision, so they would almost always be played as lawful good despite being true neutral. I did however imagine a moment of them interrogating someone with no one to witness them and imagined they’d go full evil and start eating the flesh of the person they’re interrogating and making them watch only to heal the wounds right after leaving no evidence and allowing the torture to continue if that wasn’t horrific enough to make the person spill their guts, so hearing Mercedes’ similar torture methods reminded me of that.

Cleric is one of my favorite classes up there with fighter (which I find fun because it is a challenge to figure out things to do outside of combat) and druid (because I love their subclasses and spells). My favorite subclass of cleric is the Peace Domain because its signature ability encourages teamwork within the party and it allows you to ask play the healer role without being as dedicated to it as Life Domain. As a result you can play a more balanced character who can heal on one turn and blast on the next turn while your allies (and maybe yourself) get benefits from helping each other out.

I make kobolds the most hated race in the world, even goblins look down on them. All except for one race, humans. When a tribe of kobolds move into a city sewers, the humans noticed the rat population start to dwindle, by a lot. Turns out the kobolds saw the sewers as a perfect place to live, with both shelter and a steady food supply. So the humans made a deal with the kobolds, they could live in the sewers if they promised to keep the place maintained, and even agreed to throw in some bonus food like old ham bones and food scraps to help feed them. Every other race on the planet thinks that humanity are fools for trusting kobolds, but the deal seems to be working for the two races.

My all time fav character I have played was a tempest cleric. As evil as only a middle manager of a failing grocery store can be. He was a sort of failing middle managment of the Tempest (homebrew) religion. It was a religion with a very devoted following, but a bad habit of recruiting in the form of seeing if a recruit could witstand lighting directly blasted into their body longer than a fully fledged member could. In theory this would make it so only the powerful could join, but in practise this often just killed one recruit and a member in one go. Therefore he was tasked by the elders to go look for more recruits, a task that was not delibirated on much further than ''bring back more than we lost last year, and that should keep us afloat for at least half a year''. He joined a military expansion as a mercenary to decemate the local populace of a small island nation, so that the empire that was going to pay for the services rendered could swoop in and take over. His real goal was to capture as many of the islanders and mercenaries as he could as slaves and bring them to the Tempest HQ before the main force of the empire would arrive to meddle in his affairs. He portrayed him self as a benevolent good natured healer who would only use force if needed and tried to convince his allies to take enemies prisoner instead of disposing of them. This was of course just to get as many people on the boat as he could before the time would come to sail off back home. By the middle of the campagin he was dubbed ''the warden of mercy'' since he filled the local prison up with people to the point where he requested they be held in one of the ships to ease the stress of the prison guards having to watch all the PoW's in not all that great moods pile up. Secretly he was killing off any weak prisoners and moving the stronger ones to the ship. Very late in the campagin when the big bad was dead and all that was left was to tie up lose ends he betrayed his party, killed the captain of the ship holding all the strong prisoners, took every guard and sailor on the prison ship hostage and commanded them to set sail back to the empire or he would fry them alive and feed whatever ashes that would remain of them to the seaguls. So he made off with the people he needed and HE lived happy ever after, all the sailors, guards and prisoners not so much.

I have this image of a cleric of creation that's themed as a maid or butler of sorts, they always present their summoned creations in a platter or if it's bigger than they could hide they go somewhere to "retrieve" it, coming back seconds later, think Janet from the good place, their summoning of walls could be flavored as them "tyding up" reality, by turning cave walls into lavish palace walls, and creating statues, vanisters, stairs, and such, and the envoys could be painted as them calling for reinfocements, as a crowd of tinier maids and pages to follow the cleric's commands, like, an envoy of harm could be one crowd stampeeding the enemy, the envoy of healing could be like a crowd gathering around the target as if they were cleaning them up for an event, and an envoy of protection could be a crowd running from one place to another in a hurry as if they were preparing something, obstructing the path of the enemy with furniture and their general prescence, I just like the chaotic and almost incidental imagery, and the juxtaposition of this refined and collected person just bringing a frantic gaggle wherever they go, and the idea of the exalted envoy being another crowd just twice the size as usual is kinda funny. Pandora's palace by toby fox's vibes.

Ok all of this idea, but the Cleric is the Head maid/butler and has multiclassed into artificer to created subordinate servants that won't rely on the Head's divine power instead having some of their own to a lesser extent.

Great video! I was hoping you would make one on this class seeing as I am currently on my first ever campaign as a Cleric and it's nice to see people who can see beyond me being a walking med-kit. The number of times I've made my DM cry in despair at the fact that almost nothing he throws at my Pathfinder Cleric ever puts her more than slightly off is hilarious.

I play a tiny Owlin Twilight Cleric, and it's been so good in the campaign story line as well as with the party make-up. With Twilight domain's Channel Divinity "Twilight Sanctuary" (1 minute, 30 foot radius dome centered on you and moves with you) you can choose to give temp hit points or end a charm/frighten effect when a creature ends its turn in the dome radius. It's been a lot of fun so far, several sessions in, and I see many opportunities for it to continue being fun.

My first DnD character was a cleric in an Elder Scrolls flavored campaign. He was a half-orc, (half-Nord) named Hriskmir, a warrior devoted to Talos, though life had set him on the path of being a career monster hunter. He was a Tempest cleric with the Haunted zone background, but rather than being an edgelord, he swiftly fell into the role of the party mom, not just healing their booboos, but cautioning them against danger, stepping into the forefront to make sure things were safe for them, providing emotional support, etc. I designed him to be a melee combat, who used his spells as a backup, and oh man it was so much fun. The DM rewarded Hriskmir with a lightning mace early on, so every solid hit Hriskmir dealt would send enemies flying. His martial and magical might was such that he could even solo a boss the whole party wasn’t supposed to be able to beat yet. Spiritual Weapon is truly a godsend of a spell.

I've been playing a 6th level Light Domain Cleric Tiefling with anxiety issues in a campaign where the world is overrun with vampires. I had never played cleric before, but it was so much fun when I downed 2 ghouls attempting to catch up with our cart by using spirit guardians to smack em each time they got in range.

I still remember a moment from a campaign years ago when I was playing a 3rd level grave domain cleric. The city was heavily besieged LotR style, and it was getting hopeless. The enemy commander finally shows up, and the cleric in a desperate attempt to rally the troops rushes to attack him in Kelemvor's name. He channels his divinity "Path to the Grave" against the commander, then next round proceeds to touch him with Inflict Wounds as a 2nd level cast, with Kelemvor's might I get a natural 20, killing the untouched-so-far commander on the spot with 128 necrotic damage. Everyone at the table was dumbfounded and the most epic roleplaying moment ensued as the DM described how the flesh was melting away, terrorizing the rest of the enemies that were witnessing an act of gods.

Played a 5e tempest cleric in a campaign that ran for over a year. That was such a blast, literally and figuratively. I used Healing Word when somebody hit zero HP and spent the rest of my time very effectively blowing shit up - a perfect balance of activities, IMO. Cleric is indeed a delight to play.

LOVE how your description of scary/evil cleric character is basically how i wrote my faction of paladins and servants of Holy Light - basically super conservative religious society where spanish inquisition is something you SHOULD expect to show up. Of course my players can be priests or paladins with pure hearts who choose to use the power of Light to help people but eventually they might have to choose between their true beliefs and their loyalty to their church/king/etc once they see how unfair and cruel their witch trials can get. (not the most original take but for me this was a great tool to make the more traditionally evil factions more appealing and humanizable while still being able to do super evil stuff for a variety of reasons)

I've got to say: while so far all the characters/monsters/subclasses you've made were great, Mercedes is on another level. Her reasoning is understandable, her goals are quite noble, but damn if she's not creepy as hell. I'd say she walks a line between a anti-villainous well-intented extremist and dark, pragmatic antihero and can easily be played both ways. I feel her like a combination between John Dee from Netflix's Sandman and Grand Inquisitor from The Brothers Karamazov in a package of soft-spoken devout nun. The kind of person that would introduce herself by preaching peace and unity and begin each interrogation by detailed description of everything she will do to victim, all in the same princess-like soft voice and with a nice smile on her face. Man, am I impressed!
