D&D Compendium of Monsters: Spectators - Your Treasure Vault's Best Friend (reupload)

The D&D 5e Monster Manual has a lot to tell us about Spectators, a handy aberration that guards a treasure you specify for a very long time! You don’t have to feed or otherwise take care of it, making it a very low maintenance summon! I find it necessary to emphasize that Spectators hate other Spectators as normal for Beholderkin, so don’t put a bunch of them in the same room unless there are dire circumstances.
If you’re looking for more context for what happened to the mages who were misbehaving, they were killed, driven out of their guild hall, and destroyed if they stood and fought. Take care of your summons - you never know when you’ll need them to help you out of trouble.

I love spectators and I always want to make them good guys in some way or another

I met one at lvl 4 in the ‘Lost Mine of Phandelver’ we encountered it two times. One of my team mates had to figure something out at the force of spells for his background story and another one was getting us in trouble by wanting to steal something. As a bard I noticed how silly it was behaving and even dancing a little. I did a performance to entertain and distract it. He seemed to love it. And one my teams made had done his background stuff and the other stolen stuff they told be by messages what they had done. Leaving me to vent for myself 😅 Long story short they wanted me to flee, but turn out the Spectator love the music and later on also me 😨 it was not easy to leave, and even now I hear him talking to me in my head from time to time.

im playing baldurs gate 3 and theres a item on act 1 that let you summon one of this guys so of course i had to put him to fight the other one that is in underdark, very entertaining

I'd feel bad killing a Spectator if it's just a little crazy and prefers to chat. I think most of my characters would try to find a way around the Spectator's orders so it can be freed and they can get the McGuffin.

In one of my campaigns, a spectator was summoned to guard a library in the underdark by a knowledge crazed wizard, the wizard told him to maintain the liberty exclusively for him but since the wizard was gone most of the time, the spectator would read most of the books to pass the time, the wizard died 76 years into its service and when the 101 years were up, he decided to stay and open the library to the public, he became the sole librarian and converted a large room the size of a small Coliseum into a play stage so it can reenact some sense from its favourite stories
