That DM was probably lame, even if the entire idea of warforged and artificers seem too high tech that doesn't mean it should be fully banned, if it's some form of low tech campaign they could be one of a kind and teach people of these alien ideas or something, so many cool ideas

@@bigloser5104 The dm that banned it was a party member in the campaign where I was the warforged, and when he was dm the next campaign he flat out no warforged. Man I loved my warforged though, we were playing the first dungeon in a box, and he practically single handedly united Gray Haven and the drow to fight against the dragons, using his own experience with racism as an example. He also, (with the help of strength potions, the enlarge spell, and a nice dm lol) at level 7, was launched out of a ballista at an adult dragon and put that dragon in a full Nelson in a rainstorm. It quickly went down hill from there, but very much worth it, still lived though. What's even better is the ballista was controlled by a dm character so the dm rolled the dragons ac, resulting in what happened lmao.

I'm not banned from any character. But a friend of mine is banned from playing Necromancers. Not because he was creepy but because in one campaign we would go into a tavern, he would cast detect undead. The GM would look at him funny and say there were no undead in the tavern. We go to a church, "Detect Undead". We go meet with the local lord, "Detect Undead". Everywhere we went he would detect undead. Then we ended up in a dark and ancient crypt. The GM looked right at him, waiting for those two little words and he says, "What?" The Gm responded with, "Are you going to detect undead?" Him, "I know there are undead here. This is where they belong." It caused the GM to throw his GM screen and dice across the room. He was henceforth banned from playing necromancer classes.

I am banned from playing Human Fighters. No, not because of why you think. But because I was playing a campaign with a DM who had his wife as one of the PCs. My character I made a Human Fighter in his late 20's and had his backstory be basically a miner who works for her character's father and starts the campaign with just the clothes on his back and the pick axe he mined with. Her character was a bard who was a snotty, prudish and just generally obnoxious to what she saw as 'the classless' young noble woman, as her father had raised her to be. In session zero my character was assigned to bring her on a tour of the mine to basically keep her away from the business discussion her father and the foreman were going to have. The mine then collapsed and we were forced to find our way out of the mine several miles away from the town where we were almost immediately captured and sold into slavery, then shipped off continent into a gladiatorial pit halfway across the world. The reason my character was banned is because the obvious happened. My fighter protected the squishy bard from all dangers without asking a thing in return, even when she managed to talk their way into freedom and basically told him he was free to rebuild his life as he wanted along with a few other gladiators she managed to free with us (the rest of the party). I told her that as long as she intended to make it back home I would join her as my character really had nowhere to go. And of course, the two fell in love over their trip back home and wound up marrying and having children once the campaign was complete. Let me be clear this was NOT planned at any point, it just sorta happened. The reason I was banned wasn't because you think, but instead because the DM told us after the final session of that campaign that that was the most beautiful in game romance he had ever seen role played. I then vowed to retire Human Fighter who starts with nothing and is just along for the ride trope because I agreed, I would never be able to live up to that campaign.

You know, edge lords are fine. Just be reasonable: -Don't expect your character to be taken seriously by the other players/characters. -make a character who actually wants to adventure (for one reason or other). -make a character who will stay with the party, even if they hate theur guts. -have a goal that is broad enough that it doesn't drag you away from the story. -your character can be an asshole but you shouldn't be, if the player's say your character is a d*ck I recommend agreeing with them and letting your character get their comeupins.

Quick build: Ravenloft custom lineage "undead" Wizard, necromancer Pump stats: Con, Str, Cha (gotta be a bit MAD for this one) Neutral stat: Int Dump stats: Dex, Wis Your casting stat will be low priority, so avoid attack and save-or-suck spells, go for ones that give you utility, escape harm, or disposable minions. He has an NPC little sister (A Minotaur), long story, who he's been protecting and raising. The character who doesn't want to adventure can still *work.* It just takes extra effort to give them a different motive. Maybe they want to see the world, or have very specific interests like learning from the masters of the world, comepleting a pilgrimage, exploring specific ruins, returning home or completing a very specific quest so that they can return to their quiet life. Not everyone adventures til they die, so eventually every well written PC has to have goals outside of adventuring anyways. There is nothing wrong with starting out with a character who already has an idea of what "happily ever after" looks like to them. It can be their greatest weakness, or strength.
@SupremeViola
@SupremeViola 2 жыл бұрын
The pitfall with the reluctant adventurer is when the player puts the burden on the DM or the rest of the party to come up with reasons to keep your character around, intentionally or not. Every player is responsible for giving their character adequate motivation to stay in the game. Other characters can "sweeten the deal", but it's no one else's job in the party to convince you to play.
@bodaciouschad
@bodaciouschad 2 жыл бұрын
@@SupremeViola well. Thats not really what I meant. The characters who are motivated to adventure for adventure's sake are boring AF as well- it's just a specific flavor of wanderlust. All I meant was that your character needs a *narratively compelling* motivation to adventure. Whether they are chasing their dreams, running with the pack, or from their past, the player needs to havr a plan A, but if they can think of something better or have second thoughts, they should be able to RP that they're not buying it.

So, funny story, since you mentioned a Drow Ranger with two swords and a panther. My first time playing D&D was last year, and I came in knowing nothing about the world or it's properties or any stories that were written. I never had access to the materials and I never had anyone to play with, until my brother, who was DM of my first game, asked me if I wanted to play, and I said yes. He said we would meet up at his house and he would help me character build since I was essentially clueless. When I showed up, he asked me what race I wanted to play and proceeded to hand me the player's handbook. I flipped through the pages and I chose a Moon Elf. Next, I chose my class, and I chose to be a Ranger who was a Beast Master. He had me choose my gear, and since I am personally drawn to bladed weapons and not so much bows, I chose two short swords. At this time, my brother was looking at my character sheet and then wrote down all the potential animals I could have as a animal companion and made me role a d6. It landed on three, which was what he had as a black panther, so, that was my animal companion. He started laughing a I got confused as to what was funny, then he broke the news to me that my character was very similar to a famous Drow Ranger with two swords and a black panther. However, since I had no knowledge of this and he literally made me role for the panther, he allowed me to play with my character throughout the whole campaign. The next campaign we did, he wasn't DM, but we got the idea to randomly roll for our characters. I got a Tiefling Druid, he's a Halfling Fighter, and so far the campaign has been a blast... One of my first characters when getting back into TTRPGs was a reluctant adventurer. But it never bothered anyone, because instead of stubbornly saying "no, I don't want to do the thing," it was "dang, I really wish that (advancing the story) didn't require me to do the thing" He was basically just super green and hadn't really adjusted to the idea of constant violence. He would try to knock people out if possible, got squeamish when anything intelligent was killed, and talked way too much. He was annoying, but in an endearing way. And it left a TON of room for character growth, which is great. Now he's a grizzled vet who has experienced death several times and has the scars to prove it.

Sorry for the essay, I hope it'll be interesting for some of you. Reluctant heroes can be interesting characters if played right. I played in an homebrew 3.5 campaing based on the Final Fantasy universe (more exactly, the FFXIV universe adapted by a new DM) My character was a Miqo'te sorcerer who owned a brewery and never wanted to go adventuring. She was chosen by the crystals and was bound to her party against her will. If she didn't follow them, the cristal in her hand would kill her and chose someone else. So she took a day to prepare her departure and follow them begrudgingly. It took her some time to accept the fact she had to be there, but after 4 levels, she was the most motivated to get the jobdone quickly and efficiently. She wanted to go back to her brewery as fast as possible and started to take her mission seriously. Reluctant heroes need to evolve with the plot. They can't stay reluctant untill the end as they must understand one very important thing : The faster they take things seriously, the faster it'll be over and they'll be back to their old life. Do not always complain, but show your reluctance with actions. The party is arguing about something for 10 minutes without taking your opinion into account? Then start advancing on your own wthout going too far to be in danger. They'll have to follow you and take a decision. Will they pick on you? Yes, but you're already there aganist your will so you don't care and they clearly don't care about you since they do not listen to you. Just don't go too far to put everyone in trouble, everyone will hate that. Something else you can do is, as soon as something close to your old life happen in the campaing, be really excited about it. My character, for instance, was really happy everytime we came to a bazar or an inn, or any time we ended up selling stuff as she was bargaining, something she liked to do as a merchant selling her own alcool. Those moment who made her remember her previous life help the other players and characters understand what she left behind to follow them and what she wanted to go back to. It might not seem like something really important, but it really leave an impression on people when they see someone really passionate about something and understand they had to drop that passion to follow them, and it put a new light on the effort that character makes to follow them. Is that character reluctant? Yes, but she has a reason to be when she's forced to do something highly dangerous when all she want is produce something and sell it. Every concept can be well made if you do it correctly. The reluctant hero might be a hard one to pull of correctly, but when it's done right, it'll leave a huge impression on the party, especialy if that character end up dying like mine did against the BBEG. She litteraly took the shot tha would have killed the cleric and was desintagrated, really accepting her fate in the end and saving a friend she learnt to respect and love with all of her heart and forever abandonning her old life. That's the only time one of my character died and made my party cried around the table. Was my character hated at the start of the campaing? Yep. But in the end, her death is the second most remembered moment of that campaing, right next the or barbarian litteraly beheading the BBEG to avenge her friend, looking at the party and saying "Let's make sure her brewery prosper, she really loved that place."

there is a few types of characters that I now try to avoid playing, but the main one was 'logical' characters, purely because, I am too good at coming up with simple solutions and plans which often would often be that simple that the DM failed to take it into account, such as using a rope to bypass descend down what was supposed to be a set piece hole in the ground and avoid an entire dungeon which turned out the DM had spent 2 whole months making into a megadungeon which was supposed to take the party at least 2 sessions minimum to explore and get through instead took half a session. and one thing that the DM Actually banned me from was playing gimmick & joke characters, purely because the rest of the Table would love them way, way too much and I would end up accidentally hijacking the entire tone and sometimes plot of the campaign turning what was supposed to be a horror or mystery setting into a constant walking joke with nonstop bee/Snow/whatever Puns

My next character will be introduced sitting silently in the shadows of a tavern. I wear a cloak that partially obscures my features, but the party can see my eyes staring almost sightlessly at them, as my mug of ales sits at the table untouched.they try to converse with me, but I respond in moans and grunts, with the occasional head nod. I follow the party, although at a slow methodical like gait, despite the fact I just kinda shove chairs over that are in the way. I walk with an obvious limp, in strait lines, my hunched back becoming apparent. We get into a fight, and my character does not dodge blows, just absorbing the damage, eventually dying. That’s when out of the hunched back comes my necromancer kobold, reanimating one of the dead enemies, and climbing onto its back, wrapping the both of us in the long dark robes. My squeaky voice comes out “Please don’t tell anybody.”

I ended up banning myself from playing evil characters. I had a character who had a god complex and a goal to take over the world using mechanically reanimated undead and a new-found trick to kill gods. Problem is, the entire party is generally directionless, and instead of the good paladin or other religious and good characters keeping him on a leash, they let him run wild, until it reached the point I was actually achieving some goals and they acted more as lackies. TL;DR I banned myself from evil characters, instead of redeeming and being made good by a good party, I ended up turning all of them evil

It's not so much banned, but I'm trying to branch out a bit from my usual playstyle. I haven't really played all that many games yet, but I have a tendency to focus solely on creating a frontline gish (or gish-adjacent) character - so far I've played as a paladin, a hexblade, a blood hunter, and a swords bard. I can't help it, I just love the reliability of martial classes combined with the utility and variety of spellcasters! Technically, I _did_ plan on making a gunslinger fighter without any spell slots, but my DM and I planned to make them into a "mage marksman" with magical _bullets_ and maybe some time-based magical items since we have both just gotten into Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina, and we thought making a character based on Der Freischutz would be cool. Also, that campaign died after a single session, so it didn't work out. Currently, I'm planning on my next character being either a Barbarian with zero spellcasting ability or a sorcerer or wizard who specializes solely in fire spells (dragon soul sorcerer or evocation wizard).

I personally have never specifically been banned from any character type/trope. However, in the last campaign I was involved in, the entire table was collectively banned from pulling the animal trainer act, as the barbarian, bard and rogue all amassed at least 3 pets each during the campaign, all of which had as much HP as some of the player characters themselves did when they started the campaign at lvl 5 (party hit lvl 10 when this ban was put in place). This absolutely sucked for me, as I had just finished making a new character who had a pseudodragon familiar and could summon aberrations, putting me in violation of the rule the DM put in place (no more than one pet per player; he counted the aberration as a second despite it not being full-time). This came at the same time as a bunch of other rule changes that, while necessarily nerfing other player characters, simultaneously blocked me from getting the edge I needed to be on equal footing with them (all other player characters except one were ridiculously OP thanks to homebrew and I didn't want to be the runt in the group), so basically everyone was in opposition to it, but I was the most vocal about it. DM made the jerk decision to, instead of normally walking back the decision, gaslight me in front of everyone as though what I complained about was never happening to begin with, so I promptly left the campaign and refused to even speak about DnD at all with this DM for the next 2-3 months.

I'm told I always pull it off well but I've decided to play a wildfire druid pixie (CG) that for once won't be the villain. Unrelated but once I did try to play a character that just wanted to help people but wasn't great at working with others, now I didn't think this would be a problem as I was just going the play them as kinda quiet and detached funnily enough just like their backstory the party misunderstood them and tried to get them to reveal "their inner workings" by purposefully plotting against my character secretly, so my character did become the villain vowing to rid this world of those as evil as the party

I am banned from playing the evil character. I use a lot of logic when it comes to the evil character archetype. They come across as a normal person that tries to do the right thing but always goes about it the wrong way. The other type of evil character usually ends up pointing out the flaws in the logic of "let's be good all the time". Due to that, they end up dipping deeper and deeper into evil. The main issue isn't that they don't work well with the party. The main issue is that the character comes across as "the player is a serial killer and is just using D&D as a way to not kill the person he has hidden in the basement." So now I am stuck as the forever DM because people love my evil characters and how they can see both the "why" and "how" the evil character exist, and it creates a more creative and unforgettable story. One of my favorite evil characters ran with a party of was Kyrius. Kyrius was a tiefling warlock (Patron: King in Yellow) who could see the future. The future that Kyrius wanted to happen was to have the world end through elderitch horrors, the issue is that party was full of lawful good clerics and paladins. How did he fit in, you ask? All of these good things that the party wanted to do led to the end of the world. Save that child? He has a child in the future, that has a child, that has a child, that has a child that becomes a cultist. The other evil thing that I use to do was cast "suggestion" and tell the person to say to the 10th person they see if they have seen the yellow sign. This allowed for me to create a cult fairly easily.

They don't need to be rogues and not even thieves, but they are always trying to find slick (and usually questionable) manners to deal with their or the party's problems. For example, I was playing this shadow sorcerer who was also a physician and anatomist. One of his purposes in life was to improve medicine. So, how did he decide to approach this? He became a grave robber, of course! He would dig up corpses, dissect them and then bury the remains, all of that in the middle of the night.

This is why I have the players roll their characters months before I start a campaign because I write the campaign to fit what they want to play. I've had campaigns of all mages, druids, Juicers (Rifts fans), and weird combos like an entire acting troupe of level 0 classless joes. The only hard rule is no alignment conflicts, not worth the in-fighting. Good+Neutral, fine, Evil+Neutral, fine, not dealing with Evil+Good. The terminology I used for 20 years is Fixers: (Fixed points I want them to end up on for the main story line), usually 5-10 per campaign Bridges: Story beats to take them from where they are, to lead them to a fixer Tie Offs: Dead ends that I can write off and time lapse them back to the main story line. When I plan a campaign I draft a 4-5 page main story line based on what they rolled for characters and have a kit of various Bridges and Tie Offs that I can throw at them as needed. Since I run more or less an open world approach to a campaign it works pretty well. And since we are 'Theatre of the Mind' players I don't have to over complicate things with mountains of maps and 'clutter'.

Many moons ago, I played a Dryad Assassin Thief named Velvet (basically stolen from a David Eddings series) in Forgotten Realms. At the end of that campaign, she was changed into a vampire by Strahd (we ended up in Ravenloft somehow). From there she moved to Shadowrun where she was a vampire, but I honestly can't remember what class, but probably similar. Then she jumped into Vampire the Masquerade. Same character through technically four different realms. That was when I first roleplayed. Now I purposely make very different characters. I have a Goliath Barbarian/Cleric named Kuori Olavi in one campaign; a Dhampir Bloodhunter named Alucard was in another campaign, but was replaced by a Shadar-Kai College of Spirits Bard named Ravin Ulshana; a Bloodhunter/Cleric Water Genasi named River Storm in another; A blood domain Cleric/Paladin Kalashtar in another and, finally a Fallen Aasimar Grave Domain Cleric named Tural Crultan in another campaign (I'm very busy). I try to make them all different because I like to expand on my knowledge of the various races and class types. There are SO many to choose from.

I was banned from being an item crafter in Pathfinder. Wizard with Leadership and a wizard cohort, valet familiars on both, all the crafting feats (including the one that lets more than one person work on the same item). I was making up to 4000g worth of magic items per day, was sharing spells between the two wizards for their spellbooks, and was honestly kind of broken. Utility spells on the cohort, buffing and battlefield control on the main. Party gave me all the loot because I would turn around and double its value in the form of gear and upgrades for everyone. I was a walking magic shop. It ended up evening out, because the DM at the time had no idea how to set a proper encounter level. 200 goblins at level 4 is not good dungeon design (CR 13 according to the math). I get the concept of if they have the resources for it they should use it, but the DM is the one who decided they would have that as a resource and everything had an army of goblins at their beck and call. The BBEG, if you could call it that, had control of an entire world and its resources and was pouring all of that into taking other worlds. He was always trying to force an epic battle with every battle. I wouldn't have played that character (those characters?) if he wasn't always about pitting us against things that were always so far above us that I had to pull a miracle out of my prison wallet just to get the party out alive. And it felt like it was always on me to get us out, because none of the other players ever had to deal with anything like that in their lives. Every trap was a custom made thing that dealt instant death levels of damage, just killed you outright, would grab you by the ankles and cut you off at the shin, the hallway would tip ass over teakettle and dump the party into a vat of acid, or something else like that. And it was always the kind of thing where none of it made any sense why it was there. So, when I say I did everything in my power to make sure the party got out alive I meant it. Your boots, by the time I was done with them, would leave no tracks or scent, gave you a 10 foot boost to your speed, made you comfortable via the endure elements spell, and eventually allowed you to walk on water or any surface of liquid and came with acid resist 30. The price tag we won't talk about. Everyone had invisibility and fly potions in case they got separated and I couldn't cast it on them. My strings of pearls of power grew longer every day. Eventually I had so many that I could cast spells until my voice got raw and still have enough spell slots left to recharge a staff charge and make a magic item.

I'm not allowed to play as alchemists, conjurors, or necromancers. It's ...all the reasons you can think of. The alchemist's last straw came from spending weeks irl to spread alchemical firebombs throughout a capital city then holding it hostage when the king tried to strongarm the party after a...particularly nasty bar fight involving a bunch of off-duty guards and a mix between pepper-bombs,the terrible laughter spell, and a drunk gnome with a very inappropriately shaped "blugeoning" staff. I miss that campaign.

I'm banned from playing Intelligence characters. I have played two wizards and broken the campaign both times. Both of them Divination Wizards by the way. The first was in an evil campaign where I ended up sacrificing the souls of the rest of the party for a Ring of Three Wishes. (The players were cool with it as we knew we were all evil characters and about the Ring being the end goal. We figured most of us would end up dead anyway.) The second was in The Tyranny of Dragons game where I wound up breaking the economy through a loophole, turning an Ancient White Dragon into a mouse and dropping it into the bag of devouring, and single handedly slaying the leader, second in command, and 10/24 wizards working on a ritual to summon Tiamat.

The character doing evil things to fix the world. Mainly because its just a rule my dm has so im stuck wuth a pure neutral character just on the verge of tiptoing over the line of evil. He emotionally abused a naive pixie, handicapped a prison inmate, threw a heavy book at the pixie after a harmless prank and tortured a goliath for directions to an arena. Context is important but it doesnt change the fact this is the closest i can get to "not evil technically"

3:30 I too am also playing evil turning, or trying to turn into a good character. It’s more challenging when you’re a rogue/bard vampire that’s acting two face with a group of chaotic neutrals. My dm has banned me from picking up the aberrant dragonmark feat for future characters, because my fiendish warlock rolled lower then 10 with his d100’s 3 times, and became really difficult to kill with combat prowess, firesoul, and the beefy free 40 extra hp

Not me but one of my friends, he ALWAYS plays the EXACT SAME CHARACTER. An orc pirate barbarian, same name, same idea, he never changes it up. He has left, or almost left multiple campaigns for the following reasons: Not being allowed to use a gun, not being allowed to have 16 AC whilst not wearing armor on his chest, and not being able to have infinite ammo on his gun that did 3d8 damage. He's banned from playing that character in my campaigns.

Not allowed to play Wizards in any game that is a high level one-shot, or where we can expect to get access to spells above 5th level. This ban came after a one-shot where we were supposed to fight a pantheon of gods, and usurp them. I avoided the DM's round-1 attempts at TPK's, then proceeded to one-shot both Ares and Zeus.

Not necessarily banned from playing this, but no matter how wholesome or lighthearted the backstory is for my character, they always end up being played like horror movie monsters. I have a Barbarian who plays like Jason Voorhees. I have a Fighter who plays like 2003 Clone Wars Grievous. I have a Tortle Sorcerer who plays like Godzilla. I have two Rogues. The first plays like Predator, the second plays like Scarecrow from Batman. And my Wizard could potentially be the BBEG in any given campaign since he's a Lawful Neutral Necromancer. Edit: what's really bad is that I have three tragic backstories, and only one of them is a Rogue's. Edit 2: I also have a Cleric and a Warlock that I haven't played yet, but knowing my luck, the Former would play like Terminator, and the latter would probably play like Albert Wesker.

My friend and I were banned from being Jigzaw. We would sneak into a room and set up these rubegoldberg finaldestination and SAW inspired events where someone would either die or an event would be ruined. And ultimately someone else would be framed for it. According to the DM and the rest of the table, it was freaking hilarious and cool the first three times. And then it became boring and irritating. Since while everyone was doing a long rest, the rogue and I (bard/??? can't remember) were burning spell slots for silence (until we remembered about sleep poison). While they were long resting, we were spending almost an hour IRL doing all sorts of perception/dex rolls/saves AND explaining/arguing with the DM about our plans. That campaign ended up being a unanimous vote for derailing and improving it.

I have banned myself from playing any h*rny characters. Mostly because I suck at flirting on purpose and I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable at the table. So all of my previous characters have either been ace in some way, already married, or grieving a lover who passed on. Thankfully only one player at my current table was dissapointed I wasn't gonna play a h*rny bard, and said dissapointment faded with each session. It's been fun playing a high charisma character where the joke is less "lol, your character got laid" and more "lol, that shield Guardian who thinks its a wizard liked your music so much it wants to kidnap you to be its familiar."

My hot take is that games of 2 to 3 characters are basically ideal. You get to experience the world and have a really strong team dynamic without the bloat of the 4/5 man party. We just put up with larger numbers because we want to socialise, not because it makes the game any better. My trope we banned: Didn't work in practice, but we basically banned Force characters in star wars because they were meant to be rare; and that without that ban any lost characters would probably be replaced with them. Didn't work though as the next player immediate brought a force sensitivity tree (the rule is we couldn't start as one) and the GM strangely didn't inhibit it. It definitely negatively impacted that character however since after the bullshit he put me through with the last character; I *wasn't* going repeat that bollocks again of putting up with a character that just *wanted revenge*, basically didn't count for anything since he was always off on his own side quests so a party with him was basically, always a man down.

Long story but it’s good. I’m not longer allowed to play a blaster type of warlock. Our first campaign we played was Curse of Strahd. I played a pact of the fiend warlock and it started off ok and we made a decent team for a first time really playing through and fleshed out story. While my character Rodney Toegold (Rod for short) was completing small tasks for his patron Belial, Asmodeous was taking notice and boy did he have big plans for Rod. Rod was totally ok because the extra power and abilities he was receiving was exactly what he wanted and he could never get enough. Halfway through the campaign the DM and me agreed it would be interesting to betray the party as an end twist. Rod tried to be slightly annoying and write speeches that almost sounded like he was a Strahd sympathizer, but would make it look like he would sacrifice himself to keep the party going in tricky spots. After we defeated Strahd all we had left to do was the ritual to remove his power. Rod was selected to perform the last part of the ritual and instead he used his wand given to him from Asmodeous to absorb the power of Vampyr which would give Rod 6 levels and would be the final task to give Rod the power he wanted but he would no longer the true evil inside of him took control and as the party realized their happily ever after was ruined. Asmodeous turned Barovia into the 9th plane of hell and we ended the campaign right there. Everyone was mad and that’s how I’m not allowed to play a caster warlock anymore. We recently started the Ravenloft campaign which picks up shortly after the events of the 1st campaign and they only felt comfortable with me playing a cleric. Also when Rod absorbed Vampyr and turned completely evil I had the DM play Amadeus and yelled Asmodeous over the song which they absolutely hated. Ps we’re all friends and we’re all good. We laugh about it every time it’s brought up.

I have a trope I've re-used several times for one shots or spur of the moment campaigns. Int dump stat human fighter with almost no pre campaign memories. Back story is waking up under a tree with the side of his head essentially caved in and no memory of what had happened. Preferably, this is where the party finds him; In a confused state under a tree barely alive. His name is Munglorp Smumf, or so he assumes, since his ONLY vague memory is the phrase "It's MILORD SMITH" then a flash of pain. I even have the perfect character voice for him. Deep pull, but I use Neil from MTV's the young ones. This hands the DM full reign to decide who milord Smith was and what I did to piss them off. I have a campaign im in now (playing this evening in fact) where that throw away character trope stuck and is now up to level 11. I love him, he has now grown far too much to re-use ever again. I will also never play a play rogue/mage multi class rags to riches trope ever again. This dates to my old 2e character. He is retired and still runs a kingdom (and every thieves guild on every continent he has found) in that world as an NPC. No need to go there ever again either. I guess I just call a successfully played out trope finished and move on.

Funny to stumble onto this a year later. I am now on the verge of being banned from playing bards, regardless of subclass, in 5e. I have 4 active bards going in various campaigns, and was RESOUNDINGLY mocked for adding #4 to the most recent one despite the unique flavor I give them. I might die on this hill though, the 5e bard kit worked into a melee build fits my play style SO well.

The "reluctant hero" trope works just fine, if YOU as the player do it right. In most media, the reluctant hero is drawn into the events of the story simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Build that into your backstory. You are already the reluctant hero before you even start playing. No work on the DM's part required. It should NEVER be on the DM to put in extra work to motivate your character to do something, its up to you as the player to roleplay your character and why they get involved. Part of the unwritten contract of the game is that the players are agreeing to participate in the adventure. If you are going to roleplay a character that is reluctant to do anything, then there is no reason for the DM or the other players to even bother with you. They have every reason to just leave you at the inn, and if I were your DM, I would tell you in advance that is what will happen if you try to make me force your character to join the adventure because your character is "reluctant" to do anything. Take Han Solo from Star Wars as an example - after delivering Princess Leia to her allies at the end of Episode IV, he bails before the Empire shows up. Its not his fight, he got his money, so he's leaving, and he basically says as much. However, he ultimately comes back to help fight. That is the reluctant hero. He didn't want to be there, he had no real reason to stay, but he showed up anyways and helped save the day because that is what heroes do. From that point on, he moves away from that reluctance. He knows that things need to be done and that he can help to ensure they get done, so that's what he does. This is called "character growth", which is a dimension that a lot of D&D players don't add to their characters. Chewbacca and C-3P0 can also arguably be listed as reluctant heroes as well, only joining the adventure because their friends (Han Solo and R2-D2, respectively) do. Luke Skywalker also starts out as a reluctant hero, but his reluctance falls more into the backstory category. When Ben Kenobi tries to convince Luke to accompany him on a rescue mission, Luke says that he can't leave, but changes his tune after finding his aunt and uncle are dead, killed by storm troopers seeking the droids that he now has. His adventure hasn't really started yet at this point, but the next thing that happens is Ben and Luke hire Han and Chewbacca to provide them transport, which brings the most of the core members of the party together. From a D&D standpoint, you could consider everything up to and including the events in the cantina as the players working out their backstories in Session Zero. When Han presents his reluctance to go on the rescue mission, its another PC (Luke) that tries to convince him to help. Han doesn't seem fully convinced, but goes along with it anyways. THAT is how you roleplay the reluctant hero.

If I'm putting in the effort to make a creative and interesting world for my players to explore then the absolute *least* I'm owed is that they put effort into making creative and interesting characters to explore that world with. It's more fun for everyone when players actually make their own characters instead of just pulling an archetype off the shelf.

After a Pathfinder campaign, one group has "banned" me from playing bards. It's not because of "lol horny bard." In fact, my bard never hooked up, a single time in the campaign. No, it's because of two things -- one, I created a source of constant income, eventually ramped up to hundreds of thousands of gold per in game month by level 10 or so (in a kingdom running campaign that would go through months at a breakneck pace),, and two, I got my bluff score up to +90 (+70 and then glibness). And was too good, out of game, at getting around the best attempts at making me tell the truth. For instance, zone of truth? They needed a check to cast it on me, I got a save, and then even if I failed, I would just tell the truth in a way to make it unsure if I was actually affected by it / sound like I was lying, calling for more bluff checks that even most gods couldnt contend with. Even with the impossible lie modifier. Was a great time, but a nightmare for the DM understandably. (Especially when I got pageant of the peacock and improvisatory performance, allowing me to use bluff for performance checks AND all Int and Int-based checks. All of them. At that point, I went from the best liar to the keeper of all truths, master of crafting, and most prominent performer in all the lands.) In my defense though, he told me explicitly "everyone in this group is a min-maxer and will make broken characters, so go as nuts with it as you can. I'm balancing around them already." Unlike the rest, I stuck with a wholly first party build, and went with RP skills over combat. Just turns out bluff can be more terrifying than any combat min-maxing. On a different character, I said "I'd like to make a bluff check," and I swear he had a war flashback or something.

I suffered a "soft ban" for playing with clerics at all in my party. What basically happenend is no one in my d&d group would ever play either as a control, utility or support focused character/caster so i kinda just had to pick one, and since i really enjoyed that it would be ok. The problem is, because i wasn't really crazy as my friends who would just jump straight into danger and most of the times fall unconscious or just get bodied, i always strategized, always prepared the fuck of myself for ANY possible situation that i could think of and usually i ended the fights because, well, my fellow adventurers would be in a really bad spot usually, and that made the dm start to specifically target me, and when he accidentally killed me, well, everyone else also died after me. I tried to play as a cleric again after that situation but the same situations happenend even if it wasn't the dm's or mine intent. So i just stopped and started to play either as melee martials or not-that-bright casters
