My character rolled a nat 1 on a Nature check, proceeded to laugh and say "OWLBEARS DON'T EXIST!" DM says "You hear heavy breathing directly behind you. What's your AC?" Survived, but my dwarf was unceremoniously punted up a pine tree.

The party was fighting an inquisition, raiding a local cathedral and all was going well. Then the doors burst open and the champion of the faith, “the hammer of god” strode out. Barbarian rages, rushes in and wallops him with all his strength. The Paladin takes the hit on the chin, mutters “my turn heathen” and caves his chest in. We manage to undent the barbarians chest and flee for our lives. Tiefling nearly got cut in two though, she shouldn’t have tried to cheap shot the furious tin man.

DM here: gave my players a moment like this when the TRUE BBEG, who had been helping the players through the campaign to get rid of a powerful rival, turned up at the end and revealed his true identity. toward the end of the fight, he used a 9th level spell i created, the name of which was taken from an Anime called Overlord. the look on my players faces when the BBEG shouted "The Goal of All Life is Death" as a wave of necrotic damage fell over them all was priceless. 2 of the 5 players were killed by the spell and 2 others died just after, the day was won by the Barbarian of the party.

I was present when our lvl 2 bard got instakilled by a first level spell. At max HP... Our DM rolled a nat 20 with Inflict Wounds and dealt 42 damage. That was 10 dmg above the instakill threshold for our 16 HP bard. The combat didn't last that long after that because it was just one cleric and we supermurdered him but I will never forget the sheer terror of that moment

So I did my first session as DM, and it was so funny. The warlock handcuffed the paladin to a door, the bard choked on every drink he drunk, and finally the paladin tried to cook a sahuagin who hates elves, (the bard was a half elf). Luckily everyone was against cooking the sahuagin; also, the first attack roll of the campaign was a nat 20 on said sahuagin.

We were in a fight with one flesh golem and what I was thinking was another stranger flesh golem. I think i can distract the Stanger looking golem with evasion or AC so the group can focus on the other flesh golem. Turns out this fifteen eyed fox man creature isn't some stitched together servent he is the necromancer thing that does the stitching. He casts finger of death and I need to do death saving throws or turn into a zombi as he starts talking about wearing my character's face. And the session ends, and for a week I am in limbo. The DM messages me saying have an alt character ready. Next Session the bad guy tries to obscond with my character's body with the rest of my group running after. They risk a blind portal jump to get my character's body. The bad guy is more concerned about keeping my body away from the group than his own safety. My character is on 2 passed and 2 failed death saves even burned an inspiration when the wizard used Bigby's hand to float up to my character, because the bad guy had levitated the body to keep it away from us, then with his action gave my character a healing potion. We chased him away and managed find a safe place to rest. I had my character who is a drow have an ugly cry that her own drow housemates wouldn't have risked that much to save her. The many eyed fox continues to try and come after us, even trying to make bargains with the party for my character until we find his layer and kill him. The paid DM says in other games the fox is a minor villain but he was happy to make him extra special for us.

My half elf bard. Gaelyn Morvyre was from the college of whispers and the gm thought he would be a fun quirky character. He wore a silly little costume and played the violin. Then to the GM’s shock he ditched the theatrics and pulled out a crossbow once combat started and using the sharpshooter feat he completely wrecked the intended boss encounter. He only got more deadly as the campaign went on and was the priority target in combat. No one expected him to be such a massive threat. He had an uncanny ability to cheat death. I just rolled really well on my saves and the dice gods would not let him die. He had been shot with arrows, impaled through the chest with a spear, impaled through the stomach by a greatsword, had to have an arm replaced, burned, had to lose a finger due to a cursed ring that couldn’t be removed, etc. He survived everything the dm threw at him and always returned with a new scar or injury. Either my bard was really lucky or made of Adamantium.

In curse of Strahd I interrupted a ritual by misty stepping up to an orb powering it and stowing it in my bag after getting it free from a statue. Strahd did not like that. After appearing before me with his own misty step he proceeded to carve me up like a thanksgiving day turkey. And left. Mad the ritual had messed up and couldn’t be redone he left after a turn or two as he had gotten bored with our weakness. (We were level 5 i believe and the dm had amped Strahd up for a higher level campaign setting.) I made it out alive but barely but less than satisfactory means. Still if it weren’t for making a deal with a devil my father met etc etc backstory, It’d have been a toss up if the party could have saved me in time due to a horde of angry druids that weren’t to happy about me messing up their ritual. I got back at him later though. Solomon sends his regards Strahd *places crown on his head* as does your late father!

My Bard in Tyranny of Dragons liked to wander off. Mostly he got bored when the party started taking too long. Now Jack was OP because he was a College of Lore bard. I walked into an unexplored part of a dungeon. In the room were 3 Ettins. The rest of the party had no clue, it was handled via notes passed back and forth while the DM handled the rest of the party. I got knocked to half HP but three Fireballs later I had a belt of Hill Giant Strength. I think he was level 8. Two other times in the same campaign. A young blue dragon was sent after us in Waterdeep. Jack and the druid in the party went out of the bar to see what was going on outside. Jack went down for the only time in the campaign after he took the dragon's breath weapon attack, a fumbled guiding bolt from the druid that hit me, and another breath attack. Third was later, we were in a tower and Jack used a teleport pad but took the key with him. He wound up encountering an Efreet. Jack beat him at a game of chess and got three wishes in return for freeing the Efreet. I got the wishes and got out of the room without freeing the Efreet. That's how Jack learned he's a demigod and his purpose and age. He later convinced an adult blue dragon to go talk to the Efreet and to be sure to tell him that Jack sent him. I wish I could have seen that battle.

as my old DM once described about my tiefling monk.... every single boss enemy... an amusing cascade of 'perfectly balanced' homebrew things that got so bad that i '1shot' a mini-boss. i had a cursed gauntlet that made any attack i made use the last element of magic i was hit with (including healing as an element so i for a time outclassed out cleric and druid combined on healing) add to that i got some wrist mounted whip-thing with multiple whips on it (that monstrosity he ruled my monk be proficient with so no penalties on 5d4 per whip, all three whips hit for a single attack roll... so roll 1 attack, hit and get 3X 5d4 of last element). at some point he introduced an absolutely broken homebrewed haste spell (extra full turn instead of the basic version... and it was stackable) and all of that including a monk with somehow through magical items and stupidly lucky rolls at character creater 20 CON and 26 DEX 20 WIS... and we were up against a mini-boss where the second monk in the party was still on the way to join us for (druid was with me already and had said broken af haste spell). *Druid cast 'Haste' on self, instantly gets another full turn since for some reason that thing counted as a BONUS ACTION *Druid casts a healing spell on me, changing my attack element to healing / holy magic since we're up against an undead enemy *Druid casts haste on me *I hold TURN (DM ruled that as allowed so all my stacking actions were halted until undead boss showed itself) *Druid continues to stack 'Haste' on me with every turn that passes after we called out to provoke the boss *THREE turns later ghost boss shows up and gets a grand total of 4 full turns of a quivering palm monk attacks including all rounds using flurry of blows unloaded on boss *everything hits, about half crit... *Use dice roller app because the entire table together doesn't have enough d4 dice for what we need in a reasonable amount of rolls *DM asks me 'how do you want to do this?' after closing laptop with calculations on total damage. Because of stacking weaknesses and bonusses, Holy weapon (the wrist mounted whip thing being a gift from a god) doubles all damage, healing / holy magic as damage type doubles all damage... he was already at around 800 points of damage before calculating crits... suffice to say... that boss did not make it to it's turn. at some point i was told because of repeated instances like that... just about every major battle the enemies felt in danger because of my character (probably some amount of comedic projection from his end onto the enemies but still amusing to think of it in the way that my character was so broken that enemies sensed the innate danger he posed

Player here and this happened to me on my second session of the campaign. For a better background information, we are playing a Digimon campaign, where our characters were humans turn into the Digimon, think Pokémon Mystery Dungeon meets Digimon World. We are using the Kids on Bikes system so if a dice rolls its maximum amount it ‘explodes’ and rolls again until it doesn’t roll its maximum. My character, named Jude, a Psychemon has a D20 in their charm stat and has been doing really well convincing people to join the town. We were traveling through the forest looking for something that I cannot recall when we heard a rustling noise coming from the bushes. Running out of there was a Patamon and a Terriermon. They both seem to be in a hurry, running away from some thing. Not a moment later did that some thing appeared. It was a Wendigomon. It was destroying anything and everything in its path. Some of the party wanted to try and attack it, but the Terriermon jumped in the way and said, “don’t hurt my sister!” That is when it was Jude’s time to shine. I walked close to the Wendigomon and asked what it wanted and why it was acting this way. All I got in response was “Protect. Family” That was when Wendigomon took a swing at me and I was told to either make a Flight or Brawn check. I rolled a 6 on my D12 and the Wendigomon, it exploded its dice and got a 43. In all honesty, I should’ve been dead from that, considering the difference of evolution stages, the type difference, and every ten above the defending roll does additional damage I think we have a benevolent DM, and Judy managed to live by having the tree Jude was hit into take most of the impact damage. The Wendigimon fled into the forrest after that. I learned after session that if we had prepared our evolution sheets I would have digivolved that day

3.5e honestly my dm sets up a lot of our enemies as like narratively epic and most battles feel like samurai duels. A session ago we were fighting a giant machine god and a martial master with multiple arms. Going into that battle I was sweating because we didn’t know where that martial master was and since he has been described as “hitting a coin 27 times before it hit the ground” I absolutely did not want him to get the jump on us. Whether it’s because I expressed how concerned I was about that encounter or it was always what he had in mind my character was given a fusion ability with his mount and basically demolished the master before he could do anything. The giant god was a brawl though.

Our lvl 3 party was checking a hidden cave behind a waterfall. Our rogue kept casting his lightning trick to check if anything was reacting to it (against our party's will, because it was dangerous), and he happened to anger a group of 5 to 7 gricks that surrounded our party and almost killed our elf mage. We had to frighten the ones at the entrance with torches and light to make an escape before they shredded us to bits.

I was immediately caught by it after sending my companion out to get the rest of the party as backup once I realized where I was and had to talk my way out of it. The party fight an angel whose statblock is basically Marut with some modification. Instead of saying its attack always hit, I roll the dice as usual and say something like "108 to hit" and "it's DC 5000, anyone succeed?". In other campaign the party fought a halfling swordsman BBEG who can simply cut thru a Force Cage cast by an NPC wizard and immediately killed the wizard in his first turn of combat. I always portray the halfling as an angry yet clumsy seemingly incompetent leader. There some NPC who talks about how great he is in combat but all sounds like bunch of BS story, until the party taste it themselves.

For me it was when we realized the challenge we took on, with no way out but success or death. Consisted of 20 waves of increasingly difficult monsters in decreasing numbers. Well the DM warned us, that it feels to us, like we shouldn't be here yet and we did it anyway. I only joined the group a few sessions ago. And only ever heard the others speak about this objective. The second oh shit moment was when we realized we'll not be able cheat our way to a long rest, for our casters to restore their spell slots. And the third one was when our Barbarian died and we had no way of resurrecting him while in the challenge. Whether or not the rest of the party will survive the challenge is to be determined, but I feel like my Character might not live to see level 10.

Not mine, but I was the DM. The party was traversing the high seas when they were caught in a (predictable) terrible storm. One specific player was an Orc Barbarian who, for reasons I do not understand, spent all of his money at the port before he set sail to buy an attack dog and gave himself AND IT plate mail. He had the dog leashed to him when the storm hit. He also didn't think of going below deck. Cue some horrendous rolls and he goes overboard. With the dog in tow. "It's fine" he laughed off, "I have great athletics". The party quickly threw a heavy rope to him and figured they could just haul him up. I reminded everyone just how heavy he would be in full armour, and that there was an armoured dog as well. Cue uncomfortable silence and a look of horror for the Barbarian. They rolled horribly for almost all their following checks. One of them didn't make it. Call it karma for trying to eat the party turtle.

In an online 2nd edition campaign I’m in, I was playing a dwarf Fighter named Ruk (pronounced like the chess piece). I rolled horribly for his stats, the highest I got was a 13; everything else was either an 11, a 10, or an 8. We were investigating a lizardfolk settlement (which we later took to calling “The Lounge”) which we had found out were buying a ton of broadswords while we were looking for some kidnapped people (they were taken as slaves aboard the same ship that was selling the broadswords). Anyways, at the end of the first session in the lounge, Ruk (for the second time in the campaign) got hit by some feeblemind spores, so he had an intelligence of 3 for the next two sessions. Fast forward two sessions, just before the feeblemind was to wear off, we found where the lizardmen were training, led by two pretty beefy lizardmen and one BEHEMOTH of a lizardman. Ruk, being a naturally slap-happy individual with a hammer, was on board when the rest of the party said that they had to go. The rest of the party made the plan to bottleneck them at the entrance, but Ruk, with his temporary intelligence of 3 and a normal intelligence of 8, didn’t catch that part. So, when the fight kicked off, he opened the door by hitting it with his hammer, yelled, “HERE’S RUK-Y!” then proceeded to bum-rush the nearest lizardman, hammer held above his head. When it got to the biggest guy’s turn, he went to attack the buffoon that is Ruk. I thought I could take him… until he hit me (AC 4) with an 11 on dice… I then noticed that he had a THAC0 of 13 (for those who don’t know how 2e works, instead of having modifiers to reach a high AC, you instead have a small modifier, the lower your AC, the better it is, and you also have something called a THAC0 [To Hit Armor Class 0], which is a chart that tells you how high you have to roll total to hit a hypothetical AC 0 enemy. The big lizardman has a THAC0 of 13, meaning that he could hit Ruk, with his AC of 4, on a 9 total…) I then immediately said out-of-character, “Gentlemen, it’s been an honor and a privilidge.” (An inside joke that I started when I thought Ruk was about to die, even though he was the enemy’s punching bag for almost every fight and went down every fight except one. This time, I thought Ruk was actually gonna die) Ruk lasted for two turns afterwards, before he went unconscious and was, for all intents and purposes, killed. Because I was planning to use him as an NPC in a multidimensional campaign I was running for another group, I basically said that instead of the lizardman biting his head off, a rift opens up under Ruk and he falls in. He basically got kidnapped so he could fight in a crusade against Hell.

Well I have a human Cleric/Warrior and he is the tank of the group. Once upon a time our group was going through the undergrownd that was infested with demons and after some fights my cleric was geting low on spells, we were carefuly walking through the cavern and sudently everybody starts running like the devil is after them, failing perception my cleric stops and looks around just to see a giant flame monster far far away and he just starst sprinting. But here is the thing, he does not have night vision and the group guide as the first to run, sudently everybody is running way faster than me, the Belgor included, and they leave marks or sounds to mark the way for me with works by miracle. Sudently I see the belgor was reaching me and my group was no were to be able to help so I turn and wait the thing comes closer to cast a spell, when he is uppon me he teleports to behind and attacs with his sword and whip, missing the sword attack and leting me in deaths door with the whip, but i use the spell anyway and banish the mf (ps: literaly last high level spell slot). All players, the DM included, were on the tip of their toes as he threw the resistence dices (2 cause it had resistence and +6 to said resistence) and everybody cheared as the thing failed. As soon as the balgor was banished i casted sunlight on my sword and could see hundreds of shadow bessts running away from the man who defeated the belgor. Was the most dangerous moment in the life of my cleric but was ALSOME!!!

Had a moment playing the Heart of Iron module in 5e where at the start of the final combat my level 4 fighter got hit by an Iron golem’s multislam attack. I’d been the party tank most of the campaign up to that point, as 18 AC is nothing to sneeze at for level 4 shenanigans. I Went from 45 HP to 1 in a single round. Scared the heck out of the party to see someone who until that point had been Battle Maneuvering through most combats with relative ease get driven to a knee in in-game seconds. Thankfully, our party also had multiple healers who moved right after the golem, but damn it was touch and go for a bit. Now young Targen Nalys has a caveat to any bounties involving golems that there must be a healer available for said quest.

My character was a lvl 7 halfling drakewarden ranger. The entire party was at the bottom of a volcano with a cult playing a effed up game of keep away with a bunch of magical macguffins, but I only cared about one thing. My dragon had been kidnaped and was currently in possession of one of the present BBEG's. Long story short, our party's sorcerer cast hallucinatory terrain and made the volcano look like it was erupting, cause the BBEG to start trying to flee. My character was furiously chasing him. At some point, the volcano started erupting for real and I was running up the inside of this volcano (climbing speed gang) after the BBEG while lava was rising beneath me. I was on 0 health from so many sources of damage that I had lost count, but I rolled a high con check and my DM let me stay up anyways because my character was so damn mad. You see, his dragon was effectively his adopted daughter, and she had been pseudo killed/kidnaped about 5 sessions ago. To make matters worse, my dragon was also my casting focus. So I had to slog through my ENTIRE 6th and 7th levels as a ranger without a subclass AND without being able to cast spells. Bottom line, both me and my character really wanted my dragon back. It was a really chaotic combat that was entirely unstructured (No initiative order or battle map, just people doing things) and lasted the whole session, but in the end I chased him down, bargained with him, and got my daughter back. Heart rate was still going like a mf though

I have a good one of these. Me (Bugbear bear totem barbarian) and another player (playing a tabaxi druid) were split from the party, off on our own little side quest at the time. We wander through a forest and come across a random encounter. What looked to us to be a dryad controlling an earth elemental of some sort. We get dragged into a fight because of the druid's piss-poor negotiating skills, and, after beating the crap out of the elemental for what feels like hours, I start getting engulfed by the damn thing. Panicking, the druid decides to blast the elemental with a lightning bolt. Unfortunately, it was then that we realized the then bloodied elemental was actually a shambling mound, and lightning damage healed it somehow, while I was now in the single digits because of being crushed inside the thing for multiple turns. The splash damage from the lightning bolt didn't help either. Luckily, the druid managed to convince the dryad to let me go by becoming its servant, replacing her druid levels with warlock levels, and I survived severely injured, and due to this encounter as well as two more with similar outcomes, became claustrophobic.

I ran a oneshot some time ago, where the party got kidnapped by a hag. They went through her lair and reached the boss room, where the hag waited for them on her chair made of bones. When the bard opened his mouth, she interrupted him, pointing at the ceiling and saying "shush now dear, wouldn't want to wake the little one up". The ceiling was a giant mimic. Also the door behind them slammed shut and woke it up when the hag waved her hand. The party promptly panicked :>

Pathfinder, we were in this town that'd been destroyed and put under a curse and ended up fighting a bunch of evil zombie snowmen things. My Witch got thrown into a well and a little later one of the snowmen also fell into the well. So I had to fistfight a snowman as a caster with 8 strength. Barely managed to survive and kill the thing. I was panicking at the time but now it's a really funny really memorable moment in the campaign. Which still gets brought up sometimes

Reverse version of this. Playing a werewolf campaign and we were hunting down a bane that basically was Jack the Ripper through time. Everyone tried setting traps for this thing with magic and such wanting to keep the possessed human alive. I played a bonegnawer ragabash and was very much on the practical side of things, reminding folks that sometimes you don’t need a massive rite when a car bomb can work just as well. So knowing this thing was targeting easy victims (mostly teens) and being the youngest and smallest I set up a bit away from everyone else just looking like your average homeless gal trying to stay warm on a park bench. Everyone else was off looking “normal” or being far to elaborate. Cue the guy showing up and deciding to try me. I ended luring him in only to grab him and smashing his face in the bench, knocking him out before I looked at the others and went “See? Easy pickings.”

My cleric / wizard had spirit guardians going and was surrounded by two frost giants and four ogres. Spirit guardians makes the enemies spend extra movement to get away, so I became some sort of quicksand trap holding the angry monsters in place while they wailed on me. The rest of the party was busy firing cantrips and hitting them for single-dice attack damage. The problem was that I was running out of spell slots to shield with. Over 400 damage distributed across the field before I went down. This character is the HEALER, not the tank by the way.

More of a we're in danger but anytime the fight starts and the tank or another frontliner gets 1 shot or near-1 shot by an enemy (usually due to a crit). This has happened several times, including in the Beginner box. As for surviving, usually but it's almost a tpk most of the time with one person still up. Anytime fliers show up in the earlier levels. Was a tpk once, the rest it was messy but manageable. Hezrous (or anything else with the heightened Paranoia spell). Fail? gratz, you're fighting solo. Crit Fail? gratz, it's a free for all. In both cases for the rest of the battle. When i ran into one, everyone (but the npc companion with us) survived but it was just chaos (only 1 person succeeded their save). It would've been much worse if the Hezrou wasn't the only thing there. Heightened confusion as well though it's less common. I say heightened because it goes from single target to effectively everyone in range When anyone gets mind controlled. In one case, had a barb beat up our tank and down him about 3 rounds in a row. Was a near tpk. In another, had the tank (who was 2 lvls above the rest of the party) effectively turn into the boss encounter for the session. Another case of chaos but everyone lived. (Pathfinder as usual for me)

5:52 "and up-cast 'Enlarge' until the rifle was colossal-sized, and used it like a varmint rifle to plink the rest of the party" somehow, im not sure using a gun that is as big or bigger than a battletank cannon (if im correctly understanding the up-scale size comparison), should be described as 'Plinking' its target. o_o The particular image that comes to my mind, is an old movie, called TANK (james gardner), the scene where the deputy comes out of the corrupt sheriff's office - to find himself facing down the really big BUSINESS END of a tank's cannon barrel. "i do believe i gotcha covered."

The campaign setting is in present day boston and the party is in a military style helicopter. 2 lightning birds show up, battle ensues. The birds get hit hard but they push back. Me at level 8 with 34 health left. 1 bird uses firebreathing, I failed the dex saving throw, over 50+ fire damage. I am burnt to a crisp but stable thanks to the party gunslinger. I got humbled that day lol.

This most recent session lol. Our characters were fighting a bunch of cultists in a cave. Room to room, small fights, not too hard. We turn a corner and a door opens, releasing some nasties - a bit harder, but still manageable. Then we enter the final room. Some more cultists, including a pretty heavy duty warrior, not great, and then - slow pan to the far wall. A big ol’ crystal entity thing; we’d fought something similar before and survived by the skin of our teeth, and that was when it was the only baddy on the field. We had to end the session mid-combat: most characters below half hp, one hanging on by a thread, still some cronies left and the crystal entity is *completely untouched*

My weekly 5e campaign, I'm playing an anthropomorphic coyote, level 7 crossbow expert fighter of a homebrew subclass created by the DM. At level 7 this granted me 1 cantrip, 1 first level spell (proficiency mod X per day) and Counterspell 1x per day. I chose Eldritch Blast and Dissonant Whispers. Plans to multiclass into Warlock next level up. Rest of the party is a Cleric, Bard and Ranger. Tasked with clearing an island of a coven of 5 Hags, we have already eliminated one with ease. Now in our possession is a communication orb. The hags know where it is and can hear us if we remove it from the bag of holding we tucked it into. Plan was to head back to where we'd met a black dragon who agreed not to kill us if we brought him the head of one Hag in particular. The one we've killed. We figure we'll use the orb to let the hags overhear that the dragon put us up to it, leave the orb with him as a "gift" then slink away in hopes that the dragon and hags will have at it and soften each other up. We'll go in and mop up what's left. In the night, we failed a Wisdom save and shared a vision of then hags meeting. Planning to hire the dragon to hunt us down. We hurry off at daybreak, and are only a couple hours from the dragon's lair when one of the hags zooms overhead in the direction we're going. Our aarakocra cleric (for some reason) flies up to pursue. The rest of us pull out the covered orb to enact our plan early. Except the bard mentions specifically lifting a corner of the covering just a tiny bit to be sure they hear us. DM asks "Are you sure?" Yes, says the Bard. The Hag stops and wheels around. They now know exactly where we are. Cleric fails her stealth check as she dives for the trees, and is now booking it back towards us with the Hag in hot pursuit. All 4 hags are now converging on us. The DM gives us 2 combat rounds to prepare ourselves, and ends the session before initiative is rolled. We begin combat next session. "I'm in danger." I'm already brainstorming ideas for a new character as we speak. Wish us luck!

When I first started playing, we were playing a Warhammer DnD campaign and I was a human mercenary with a crossbow (basically a rogue). Our party were sneaking through some sewers under a town when we spotted up ahead movement and lights, along with strange squeaking. The party tried to stealthily close the distance but failed their stealth rolls. I was the only one to succeed and had full concealment. Somehow none of us get noticed. Then i had the brightest idea of all. I loaded my crossbow, got even closer and shouted "...hello?". The DM just sat there with his jaw open. The party laughed at me. The Skaven (Rat-men) rushed me and beat me unconscious and on death saving throws, face down in the sewage. Whoops.

I was a lvl 5 paladin. My party was on a ship at sea when a shipwrecked Kenku we brought aboard turned out to be a lycanthrope. He had turned Infected one of the sailors and set an owlbear we had captured in the previous session loose. The rest of the party was down or had fled I was still standing but at 17 hp and in the stern cargohold my back to the wall with these 3 creatures in front of me. With divine favor I managed to kill the sailor and revive 2 nearby party members with an aid spell to deal with other creatures. I and the warlock/bard managed to kill the kenku and the druid was able to tame the owlbear.

Dm here: we were doing part 1 of 2 of the second to last boss of a 3 year long campaign. They were meant to take care of the last remnants of a cult before moving on to a Eldritch star’s spawn that took the form of a greatwyrm. A bunch of high level NPCs were holding off the when while the party fought the cult, and I had informed the players they would get a bunch of resources back upon killing the last member. Well, they killed 4/5, and the only one remaining was a sniper up in a tower somewhat close by to the greatwyrm. Our bard completely tunnel visioned and teleported to the entrance of the cave with the paladin, only to realise they were now standing 60 feet away from a 250 foot tall greatwyrm. I ended the session there.

Homebrew with homebrew rules. I'm in it as a support DM as the main DM hasn't done any of this before. Basically his game but I handle the dice. Some of the homebrew rules can be summarized as 'no stupids'. Example: Surviving a cannon to the face because 'I haz the HPs' is a stupid. HP is flat and tougher characters are just less prone to damage. SO, the game. Session 1. Combat 1. Round 1. Action 1... My character is a dwarf warrior and the toughest, most capable combatant of an entire group that includes the PC party and an escorted merchant caravan. Ambush. A rat man falls on my head, knife first. Crit. My dwarf is now unconscious and dying. Every round, I roll a death save to see if he dies. Dwarf constitution ensured my dwarf survived. The other players, as well as the main DM, turned white when they realized what happened. Welcome to my game kiddo. Don't take combat lightly.

I already wrote about the time my half-orc fighter/wizard tanked an attack from an adult remorhaz to save a little girl, so this time, I'll tell you about what happened at the end of last session: We were saving another little girl (saving children seems to be a thing with us) so I rushed in after a party member who had already engaged with an undead tree, two summoned treents, and a tree blight. The two of us drew their attention and allowed the little girl to escape to where the other 2/3 or our party was waiting. They joined up with us after the little girl revealed she was a druid by Wildshaping and getting the f*** out of Dodge. We quickly dispatched the tree monsters with some first-rate teamwork and started to retreat back to the village we left from... and that's when the insects appeared; two giant beetle monsters and four giant mosquito monsters. the mosquitoes were size large, and the beetles were size huge. I retreated slower to cover everyone else, and the insects, who were a lot faster than we thought, started swarming me... all of them. I posted the Ralph Wiggum meme in our Discord channel and that's where we ended our last session. Also, I'm currently missing all the fingers on my dominant hand due to something else I, the sensible on in our group (seriously), pulled a few sessions ago, so my attacks with my custom sword are downgraded by a dice magnitude (2d6+Str -> 2d4+Str) until I can get that problem fixed (assuming I survive). Our next session is in a couple of days, so I'll see how many pieces I end up in then.

D&D 5e Game: My Low Tier Party is in one of these situations as of writing this comment. A cave full of Ogres, Half Ogres, a Hill Giant Boss and the whole party is running on fumes. The first few rolls in the next session will determine whether we will have to deal with a TPK or emerge battered, but victorious. Now this could have been avoided if both the Party and the DM had been smarter. The Party should have divvied up the potions of healing beforehand, since we agreed that "party loot" is inaccessible during active combat. That one's on us and nobody is making excuses for it or trying to argue the ruling. The DM should have done a better job balancing the encounters, but since he's relatively inexperienced with running 5e, I believe he should get a pass. I am also the DM's unofficial Mentor for this game, so we're currently spitballing ideas to get the party out of there safely without making the DM-ex-machina too obvious. It's a learning experience for everyone, to say the least

This reminds me of custom-setting Pathfinder 1e game called Specterguard, yet another campaign with session names. General premise is that we're pretty much the fantasy SCP Foundation. My character, Galini Marinos, is a Kensai Magus - essentially a spellsword that gave up armor proficiency and most weapon proficiencies in favor of being *really* good with the one type they can still use. Galini also took the Black Blade archetype, which gave her a sentient weapon to find before or during level 3, and has some Elric Saga vibes. The other characters include Tigim the Catfolk Ranger (it's good in PF, trust me), Simeon the Human Warpriest (hybrid class of Fighter/Cleric), and Faith the Human Oracle (basically to Cleric what Sorcerer is to Wizard) --- Session 2: The Gang Become Horror Movie Protagonists On our way back from our first mission, we encountered a strange creature, and a strange stone. All of our magic that we tried to hit the creature with acted like there was nothing to target. When a GMPC attacked it... *his entire weapon got deleted for the attempt.* We had to banish it with that strange stone, which we later referred to as the Vanishing Stone. Faith kept it. --- Session 3: Consume Prilosec and Also the Party Our second mission took us to investigating a town for various reasons. Galini got her shiny intelligent weapon Nox Atra en route - the GM named it, not me. Except when we got there, the whole place was deserted. There was a hole to the west of town. We entered. The inside was fleshy and weird. Because we were suddenly inside the stomach of a world eater. And the hole closed behind us. *We were its midnight snack.* While we were getting digested by entropy itself, we found a weird flesh lump inside the stomach area. After we poked the thing a few times, we realized it's making the creature sick. So Galini just sliced the knub in half with Nox, and the creature just upchucked us and left, giving a...debatably happy ending and averting death-by-vore. Oh, did I mention this thing was underground except for its mouth? *The canyon it left behind was bigger than the town plus its suburbs!*

We infiltrate a bathhouse that we knew people are disappearing in. Probably a cultists base of operations. We get a full service with scrubbing and my character says loudly "Hey! This place is not so bad! I guess the thing about missing people is just a rumor HAHA!". In this moment one of serving girls froze for a moment and asked me if I'd be interested in a private massage. "Well of course!" As a player I knew there is one of two possibilities. 1. She will ask me to help her escape from cultists who held her hostage. 2. She will try to murder me. She begins the massage in vip room... and then tries to stab me in the back. Shame... hoped for a happy ending. I was nimble, and got out of her way, and disarmed her... and then she yelled for help. What followed was a Blood Bath Incident where we fought bunch of cultists butt naked, no weapon (well... one dagger), no spell focuses, on wet, slippery floor. One of most memorable moments of whole campaign. We grabbed our stuff and run from there blending with other customers yelling about murder.

I have 2 Event one: character called shroom. The weird mushroom monster thing that has multiple plant stabby tendrils and he's been friends with the party for a while. At one point through the most recent dungeon he walks a bit ahead. All the party's are taking a rest. Then party notices he's missing and goes to where they last saw him. They then find him standing there with a weird demonic thing above his head and he is looking ready to kill. They said oh no, we're in danger and we're about to find out next session what goes on with that. The other event is with a guy named gadget. Now gadget can add plus two to any weapon. However he takes double damage from physical base attacks so get hit with a sword double damage. Anyways we just survived a getting run off the road and we then see the guy who run us off the road, get out, pull out a pistol and shoot gadget in the arm doing all but one hit point of his HP. We survived but gadget needed a lot of medical attention. And that's when the DM realized gadget is the equivalent of a glass nuclear bomb.

Black Crusade. First campaign playing a Xurunt Frost Father- nearly died session 1 due to two followers of Tzeentch accidentally summoning a Khornate demon. After surviving that wild magic fuster cluff, we did some traveling and ended up on Segreb. I got offered a weapon to kill a guy on top of a large tower by Kharlan the Artifax, the guy offered the female Tzeetchan a gift for killing a woman well known for magic, and the last member of the party was hired by that woman to kill Kharlan. By the end of that session I had my party members over my shoulders because one was blinded and the other had gotten set on fire, retreating because we had killed 2/3 targets, demon machines were running rampant, the Warp was spewing poison zombie creating mist on the streets, the 14 factors finally got annoyed enough by the commotion that they got involved, and Segreb was left with a large hole in the wall and was nearly destroyed. I got a neat sword though!

Oh Pafir. My Harengon Genie Warlock from our Rime of Frostmaiden campaign (The same one Kaz the kobold paladin seduced an Ancient White Dragon in) I've talked about him before. So being a Harengon from the Feywild in Icewind Dale is not a fun time as NO ONE KNEW WHAT I WAS. And seeing as every town had some crisis usually involving food, I was looked at as a food source until I could speak. (Took Create Food and Water as a way of getting into everyones good graces) Of course, it also didn't help that... well, I have a habit of drawing aggro no matter my character. And since I looked especially delicious to monsters and animals alike, I had a heavy target on my back. Every session it would end with Pafir barely surviving and knocking on deaths door needing to sleep and wax poetry about the latest monster/animal/person that wanted to eat him. One in particular severely traumatized Pafir and gave him the first true taste of helplessness (The Hag Incident doesn't count). The group was traveling through the mines in Termalain (hope I spelled that right and got the right town) in order to solve their kobold problem. Whelp, the mines had a pit that led to the Underdark. We circumnavigated it and were investigating the next few rooms when I get... wrapped, gagged, and paralyzed. "HA, HA, I'M IN DANGER.... guys?... PLEASE?!" How many of you have dealt with Grells? Floating brains with beaks and tentacles? How bout when one rolls well enough on its stealth check to beat the Observant feat and everyone else in the party dumped Wisdom? I was dragged off down a passage we had already explored, and began being devoured, choked, and stabbed. To quote Pafir, "None of the fun ways either." Guess which stat was my dump? if you guessed Strength you earned a cookie. I was in single digits when I got lucky and beat the grapple check. The next moments is why Harengon is a top tier race and you'll never convince me otherwise. Rabbit Hop, tis a bonus action movement ability that scales off of proficiency bonus (5ft per) It also makes you unable to be hit by opportunity attacks. You can bet I high tailed it out of there while screaming my lungs out. Then, and ONLY THEN did the rest of the party notice I was even missing. We killed it, Pafir screaming obscenities throughout the fight as it STILL tried to go after him. Because to the quote the DM, "Pafir is delicious". Suffice to say, we took a short rest as my poor warlock processed being on the wrong end of tentacles.

Lady runs away and I, as the rogue and only one who can catch up to her, chase her down and try to cut off her escape. Only problem is... she's ridiculously strong. For context, we are in a sewer tunnel, and my party is in a room some 50 ft away. Lady grabs my face and shoves it under the water. *Nothing* I do can break her grip, so I just start stabbing her. I'm on the verge of running out of breath, and I finally get her hp low enough that she lets go and runs (or my dm just decided to have mercy on me). My party is still in the far room...

Playing a Lizardfolk Ranger in a Curse of Strahd Campaign. We're Level 5 We're heading to a coffin-maker's house/workshop after receiving some new that sacred bones were taken from the church that staved off vampire spawn. We knock, unsuccessful in gaining entry, so myself and our Dragonborn Fighter decide to huck our Kobold Palladin through the window for funsies. Goes about as well as you expect... The person inside fled the scene through a backdoor our Aasimar Rogue finds by... being sensible and walking around? Anyways, we search the ground floor; nothing. The town guard spot the Fighter whilst me and the Palladin check upstairs. Rogue convinces the guards to chase shadows with a good deception roll and bolts away from the scene to the tavern with two of our NPC companions. The Fighter gets "arrested" but uses their Soldier background to convince the guards to let him assist. Meanwhile, myself and Palladin are still snooping, when suddenly half a dozen vampire spawn break out of crates. They quickly overwhelm and down the Palladin, who'd elected to enter the upstairs section first. I conjure a Healing Spirit in his vicinity to stabilise him, before brandishing a torch. Everything upstairs is mostly Wooden, so it'll combust quite readily. I warn the Palladin to leave, then.... Nat 1 - manage to underarm the torch so badly it hits the roof above me, thwacks me on the head and lights my shoes on fire! Needless to say, I hot-foot it outta there hoping the Palladin... follows... through the door we entered through. He Misty Steps out the window adjacent to him instead, knocking himself BACK OUT, and is overwhelmed by two Vampire spawn that ferally follow their food outside. He dies, but not before the DM allows the Palladin one last hurrah; Dispel Evil and Good on both, flavoured as an act bestow by his God for unwavering faith and bravery in the face of evil. My Ranger sees a flash of light through the ground floor windows, rushes outside to see the outcome, but can't retrieve the Palladin's Holy Symbol as a memento before seeing the other 4 spawns readying themselves to jump down. I just RUN in terror, and thankfully... they don't pursue. It's sad, because my Ranger has the Zephyr's Strike skill and a Periapt of Wound Closing equipped, and almost opted to check upstairs first. It'll be fun to roleplay the guilt of what could have been if the two of them had swapped places, had he been more insistent in opting to enter the room first. Side note - I asked the player post-session why he didn't just Misty Step *behind my character next to the open door I fled out of* instead. His reaction was priceless, but hey... it was a fantastic character moment.

In a 3.5 campaign set in Mystaria my female Lupin Ranger character got seperated from the party due to a rockslide that happened and when I was trying to get back to the party I ran into an Adult Blue Dragon that was 2 to 3 levels above my character and my character won the fight but barely as when my character finally made it back to the party she had about 2 HP left due to the fight with the Adult Blue Dragon and for some humorous RP I had my character just collapse on the ground and call for the Elf Cleric in the party's aid by saying "I need healing and my squeaky ball." Yeah I literally thought I was going to die during the fight against that Adult Blue Dragon.

So me, a satyr bard boy, my friend, a human wherewolf fighter, and the 2 last party members, a minotaur druid, and a yuan-ti articifer, and also, a dwarven wherewolf NPC, where on a mission, and where headed to our goal trough airship, disquised and all. so our wherewolf player sees a room heavilly guarded, we all assume something important is in there, and our wherewolf, and yuan-ti decides they wanna know whats inside, me thinking they would do it with or without uss, and also beibg slightly curius. Decided to help, if not only to keep them alive, dragging the unwilling druid into our plans. since we had planned to throw the guard out of one of the Windows, i decided to just open the door, inside where 2 red wizzards. Beacouse of a very powerfull ability, i managed to kill one of the red wizzards in one shot, the other red wizzard, now cornered by me, and the 2 wherewolves. The red wizzard decides to open up a Hole in the floor…..of the airship…..right underneath uss. Cue *loud cartoon gulping sound standing on the air for 5 seconds before looking down and falling* The yuan-ti and druid follow suit, after 1 failed, and 1 sucessfull featherfall, everyone aside from the dwarven wherewolf, is now falling slower, red wizzard teleports some distance away, i grab the other wherewolf and teleport after her. After a few spells from the red wizzard, amd attacks from the wherewolf im downed, and the red wizzard VERY close to death, saved by a magic item. I was saved by my wherewolf, buddy, barely hanging on, when the red wizzard uses, dominate person, making my own wherewolf friend turn on me. So here i am. A squishy satyr teen boy bard. barely any hitpoints left. Slowly falling many thousand feet in the air. My own party member AND a very angry red wizzard against me. With a stolen identity mind you. If the red wizzard escapes, we will all likely be hunted down by whatever law enforcement exist in this unfamilliar land we are in the middle off. luckilly she had ONE single hotpoint left, as she was saved by her magical item. So a singular heat metal on the gems in her face. A re cast of featherfall, and we where safe. But god damn was i in danger.

Party was split in two. I was with group called team dumb beacuse most of pc charcters we under 10int. We found a froozen lake with a dragon frozen within it. Dragons mouth was the only thing that was sticking out of ice. Our tabaxi got on top of it and looked at it eyes to check if dragon was alive. It was alive and now pissed off. We made a run for it and after we changed scenes we heared a very loud crack. Now there is a blue dragon in the wild. Party is only lv4. Dragon is somewhere and we do not know where

We survived! Was basically a matter of holding out until the cavalry arrived to extract us, mitigating the constant damage with healing spells as best as possible. Could've easily been a TPK if not for some lucky rolls and a very nice DM. Whew!

Spoilers for Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen...kinda: So we're at the final bosses of the Campaign, the BBEGs Kansaldi Fire-Eyes and Lord Soth, fighting the first of the two alongside a freaking Greater Death Dragon, while Lord Soth watches to see if we are actually worth his time to deal with instead of continuing his evil plan. This was a change on the DM's part, as he wanted Soth as the Final Boss, not Fire-Eyes, and we all agreed it was for the best. Well, one of our Artificers, Kyle, decides he's going to show Soth he's not invincible shoots him with his Eldritch Cannon. With a Crit. Soth...completely no sells it. The DM vocally contemplates whether or not to do 'something mean.' Player replies 'I'm aware of my choices and accept the consequences.' Now, this is freaking LORD SOTH, so he only really has one opening rebuke to someone who's dared incite his wrath: Power. Word. Kill. Now, this version of Soth has a special version of Power Word Kill. On one hand, it has con save...on the other, it does 100 damage even if you're over 100 health and 50 damage on a successful save. No rolls, just flat damage. Had Kyle failed the save it'd have been instant death and me, the Cleric, needing to bust out a Revivify diamond. Fortunately, Kyle makes the save...but still loses half his health with the Death Dragon's Cataclysmic Breath incoming. Which, BTW, is ANOTHER 'reduced to zero and you instantly die' attack, only this time you instantly turn into a freaking zombie. Fortunately, Soth decided after that counterattack, we still weren't worth getting out of his throne and pausing his plans to deal with when he had a Dragon Highmaster and a freaking Greater Death Dragon to handle us. Paladin player asks me to maybe do this plan we had (Path to the Grave on the Death Dragon so he can nova the heck out of it), my response is 'I have to do a spell or we might die.' I cast Aura of Life to try and stop us from getting nuked by the breath by giving everyone resistance to Necrotic, but it's a freaking Dragon's breath weapon and thus could still potentially deal a boat load of damage, enough to maybe take Kyle out. Well, by sheer dumb luck, Kyle is the ONLY member of the party who is JUST outside of the Cataclysmic Breath's cone of effect. Well, the breath weapon did 50 damage, which means had Kyle been in the blast zone and Aura of Life not been in effect, he'd have been dead. We won, Aura of Life being...well, a life saver, but yeah, that was a genuinely worrying round. And now we have to fight LORD FREAKING SOTH and several members of the party have actively ticked him off. By the way, did I mention Lord Soth swatted Fire-Eyes back into the battle zone like a gnat when an Artificer literally launched her at his face and entered the battlefield by walking through a Cloud of Daggers without even flinching? Because he did. Ha ha! We're in danger!

Who is Lord Soth, beyond just a BBEG? He definitely sounds like he’s among the most evil of BBEGs.

@@jonathanmarks3112 Lord Soth is THE Death Knight, and pretty much D&D Darth Vader. He's a fallen knight who could've stopped the Cataclysm but threw it away, being cursed to live as a Death Knight one lifetime for each person who died because of him. He's one of the scariest guys in Dragonlance lore. How dangerous? He once ended up in Ravenloft and fought Strahd. Strahd is afraid of Soth.
