I ain't even played a touhou game and I think I agree. All these Jaz albums got me curious about the fandom and like you guys are out here making games, manga, and jazz like whaaat. Are all these albums sampling the games ost or playing off their beats? Or literally just making some tunes and putting a character from the series on the album cover?

I had a really cool answer that was unfortunately deleted because I accidentally refreshed the page, although so you aren't left hanging... For the grand majority of these songs, the circles ( what touhou bands are called, although circles are really just doujin ( indie ) bands, so not exclusive to touhou ) take the melody and sometimes the baseline and then make the song from that. Some circles take more creative liberty than others. Circles usually stick to certain genres. en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Doujin_circles. These circles usually make their money from online sales, but also sell physical CD's too. I find it cool that even though the distribution of CD's has died out in the west, it's more commonplace in Japan; at least as far as doujins go. The coolest thing in my opinion about touhou music, besides the actual music, is that when you've heard enough you will eventually know how a song "you've never heard before" is going to go, because most of them share the same melody/riffs. ZUN, the creator of the game and original composer takes a small cut of the profits as well. It's even gone as far as to have a fanmade anime. I find touhou music really cool because others who aren't familiar with the game or even game music/anime in general can still enjoy the music as the albums are so professionally done if I were to play this at a coffee shop no one would know the difference. At the beginning of this I had said I wouldn't have rewritten the answer, but I guess I have haha. If you ever need touhou music for homework I recommend "Cafe Touhou". It's a 6 hour playlist comprised of touhou coffee house music. Also a circle named Shibiyan Records if you find yourself liking Bossa Nova music.
