Be is the sixth studio album by American rapper Common. It was released on May 24, 2005, by Geffen Records and GOOD Music. The album is Common's first album under Geffen, following the mediocre performance of 2002's Electric Circus and the July 2003 merger of preceding label MCA Records, which, like Geffen and its sister label Interscope Records, was a division of Universal Music Group
The album was primarily and executively produced by rapper and GOOD Music founder Kanye West, with additional production from frequent collaborator J Dilla. It debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 185,000 copies in the United States. The album is Common's second album to sell over 500,000 copies (over 800,000 copies sold), becoming a certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Be was also a critical success, receiving acclaim and accolades from several critics and music publications. The album received a perfect "XXL" rating from hip hop publication XXL and was deemed Common's magnum opus by HipHopGoldenAge. In 2022 and 2024, Rolling Stone and Billboard included Be on their lists of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.

Common is ok ('A Beautiful Chicago Kid', 'Courageous', and 'Fifth Story' BEing the more recent Common songs I liked). Def slept on. Kind of like how you're sleeping on that 'Coloring Book' reaction 'Relapse: Refill', 'Beyoncé', and Kanye's 'Cruel Summer' would go crazy too ngl

Kanye caught lightning in a bottle with his production on this thing. It’s insane how amazing ‘Be’ is and even more so how well it has aged. I think it’s Common’s best body of work and the Intro might just be my favorite Kanye production outside of his own discography. Absolutely love this record!

Finally. Also, sadly Ka passed away. A highly respected artist in the underground scene. Maybe it would be cool to react to him one day, ofc not immediately since that would be a bit too quick after this tragedy.

The first album I ever bought as a kid, on a trip to New York with my family. My brother bought Black Star and told me Common was really good so he got me to buy this (I think so he could listen to it). Incredible record, so glad to see you look at it together. The Corner continues to be a pivotal moment for me in developing my taste in music. I don't know if Kevin noticed, but the rhyme scheme in The Corner goes from 1-syllable rhymes in verse 1, 2-syllable in verse 2, and 3-syllable in verse 3. It's so crazy.

Thanks for sharing how this album was a "building block" in high school for your appreciation of music and hip hop, I feel the same way - I would listen to the opening track on repeat in 9th grade. Saw Common last month at Blue Note in nyc and he played a few tracks off this album... it was awesome to hear him perform those songs in person, there were some songs like "The Corner" which I hadn't listened to in many moons and when he performed it the lyrics instantly returned to me. "They Say" is a hit to anyone I show it to 🌍🫶 His and Pete Rock's new album is a standout as well, "This Man" is a great track off of it.

Hearing this takes me back man. I actually lived in Chicago during the time College Dropout and Late Registration was released. I was a sophomore on Highschool when this came out. Kanye's production had everyone out here trying to sample the way he did. It always makes me sad hearing this version of Ye though. I miss it. I'm saying all that to mention that I was never the biggest Common fan but hearing that Ye would be producing a good amount of it got me interested and I definitely wasn't disappointed. This is probably my favorite Common album.

This album is one of the first albums to open my mind to soulful hiphop music with deeper meanings than surface level, my mom would always play this, just sent her this video & asked her if she remembers listening to this, I thanked her for putting me on so much good music even when it wasn’t necessarily her intentions

This is still one of my favorite albums of all time, and helped further solidify my love of Kanye's production. I remember a bunch of my high school friends and I just sitting in a room together and listening to it from beginning to end, just head-nodding the whole time. I also remember hunting down the studio version of "The Food" on Limewire to insert into my version's tracklist on iTunes because I couldn't stand the quality of the live version lol. Excited to watch this one.
