Today I dive into legendary Australian rock band Midnight Oil. "Power and the Passion" is the second single from their fourth studio album 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 released in November 1982 (US). The song is one of the band's most famous, and was performed on every Midnight Oil tour since the issue of the album. In January 2018, as part of Triple M's "Ozzest 100", the 'most Australian' songs of all time, it was ranked number 29!

I believe Midnight Oil are the most important band Australia has ever produced. Brilliant musicians with an awesome live show. They sang about issues in and Australia and the world that are still relevant to this day. Good choice mate 👍

The album this comes from is titled "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1" and stayed in the Australian album charts for over 3 years.

Peter Garrett often speaks on other videos of legendary musicians, and once spoke of Midnight Oil catching up and jamming with my favourite band Cold Chisel, staying up together…. I sure wish someone had that on video. Those two powerhouses together. Man oh man! They were both a product of the 70’s.

Another one I like from this same album is "Somebody's trying to tell me something". Simple lyrics but high-energy!

About 6 years ago, at the Vic Theater in Chicago, they played this album start to finish. Other worldly, to say the least.

Thanks for this! This is the first Midnight Oil songs I ever heard. Owned it as an extended single on vinyl in the late 80s. One of my favorites of theirs!

Great aussie band, I remember going to the concert for this album back in the 80's. Your ticket cost you $10.01 (like the album). Played the Sydney Entertainment Centre and it was F*cking awesome.

Awesome band, great sound, always a great message and fantastic dancing by Peter Garrett. Subtle? What does that mean? Asking for Peter? 😂 So many great songs with powerful messages.

Midnight oil did a lot of Pub Rock from their early career and into the early 90s as their alternative sound took over. Pub Rock has many influences from pop and punk front the late 70s and early 80s, which is why it sounds like so many things. Read About It, Best Of Both Worlds, Progress (my personal favourite), and Pictures are all songs I highly recommend!

Mate Oils allways had a message but the early stuff was all about the music and the show

Not a fan of this later stuff. The first two Oil's albums are raw and powerful. Their second album Head Injuries is the real classic. They originally were a prog rock band until they were drawn to the Funhouse in Sydney where they saw Radio Birdman, The Saints and reallized if they didn't increase their BPM's they would be left in the dust. These first two albums showcase that transition. Stand out track for me was the last track on Side 2 of the first self-titled album ''Nothing Lost/Nothing Gained'', this is prog rock guitar heaven from two of the best dual guitar attacks on the plant - Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey. In those early days they were second to none live.
