I mentioned it in another comment, but they DID in fact work together on this song. The reason her voice sounds older is because Nas used her original demo audio from 2008, when they recorded together. Remember, Nas was in a different space in 2008 than he was in 2012, after his divorce with Kelis in 2009 (The green dress on the album cover was Kelis' wedding dress; The only thing she left him). His verses were obviously switched up,. They kept Amy's original vocals because... well she couldn't re-record them 😥 This song was written and recorded in the studio with Nas and Salaam Remi. They recorded a bunch of tracks that were never released. After her passing, her label wanted to destroy almost all of her unreleased songs. Her parents did not have a say in Universal's eventual decision to actually destroy her unreleased music. Nas and his label managed to save this one, and some other recordings. "Like Smoke" was different, which Nas sampled off of from a full Amy song, written and recorded on her own in May 2008. That's why "Like Smoke" was cleared for "Lioness: Hidden Treasures". The biggest issue about this song was whether to keep it on Nas' album, as the title of the album is "Life is Good". TLDR: While there are parts cut out, "Cherry Wine" was written specifically in collaboration with Nas. That's why it was cleared for Nas' album even after Amy's arsenal of music was set to be destroyed.

Cherry Wine is an amazing song but so is the whole album. When hip hop heads talk of "grown men rap", this album always comes up for good reasons. It's without a doubt one of the most overlooked albums of the previous decade and one of Nas' best. You should definitely give the whole thing a listen.

This Album came at the end of Nas and Kelis tumultuous marriage. That's her wedding dress I believe he's holding it was green. I think the most popular song was Bye Baby it details their whole relationship in one song.It also contains a sample from an Aaron Hall/Guy song. Its a great album.

You guys touched on much of NaS essence, which is he has lots of Survivor Guilt from watching his best friend IllWill, die in his arms, so NaS carries that with him and you can listen in all his tracks. This album is considered the 1st Grown Man Rap Album due to its concept, content, NaS talking about his Divorce plus more. Funny how you mention that Lilo & Stitch line, which is about NaS cleverly saying he hides away near the Equator in Hawaii when he wants quiet time, hence Lilo & Stitch which is a Disney animation of these 2 characters from Hawaii. NaS is different, his pen game is on another level. Ice Cube said to NaS on his 'The Bridge' podcast, "Back then we were doing our penmanship, then you came and put it in Cursive". Highest compliments from 1 of Hip-Hop Greats! BTW NaS said of he and Amy that she was like a Kindred Spirit, and they were really, really good friends, yet another close person he loses too young. Check out their other Collab 'Like Smoke', really nice too.

You guys would definitely appreciate Nas' "Black Bond" from that same album (Life Is Good). Produced by Salaam Remi, Nas laces it with very Witty and crafty word play which is where he earned the name "Escobar". There's a specific pattern he uses to paint pictures with this type of flow. Check it out! Great review! Nas is my favorite. The orchestral version of "illmatic" is on Amazon Prime (video). I had the pleasure of seeing him perform with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra back in 2018. Talk about class.
