DAEMONS ARE ONLY B TIER?!

I just won a local tournament this past saturday with my Chaos Daemons List. There were about 30 people and multiple teams there so the scene is pretty well established with people driving about 2 hours to be there. I ran Shalaxi, Great Unclean One with Enhancement, Lord of Change with the enhancement, Changeling, Slaanesh soulgrinder, 30 pink horrors, 3x3 flamers, and 2x3 nurglings. I scored 282 points out of 300 in 3 games. It was super fun. People fight the pink horrors and get stuck as they multiply and shalaxi is the scariest beast on the board, so they panic and try to kill her.

Yeah, I cursed some bad words about Gladiators, Leman Russes and Wardogs only being 2-point BiD, while Skarbrand, Kaiross Rottigus and GuO - the Kartoffel (potato) as we call it in Germany - are 3 times the points. I tried it with 4 and I'm dropping at least one. On a sidenote, in a recent try I did bolster the nurgle part with a Nurgle Soulgrinder ... hear me out: Rottigus/GuO Shocking on 3" and the Soulgrinder tagging along with semi-good shooting BUT 6" charge flips relatively reliable a marker for just 2 points of dad BiD-Ass makes a huge difference. And the option to indirect fire is a nice kicker. I didn't realize that you don't have to immediatly come down with Fateskimmer ... I guess I will try something there, too :) Have a nice Tournament this weekend. Cheers

They're really good! I expect them to get a couple of points increases when the MFM comes around. Though they are sometimes very underwhelming if the mortal wounds fail on their charge.

Going "mono" Khorne with maxed Bloodcrushers seems tempting. Maybe with one BT for some potential deep strike shenanigans. Sure, big units of Bloodcrushers can be awkward but these kind of lists were doing well before the update and there should be no super easy targets for Bring it Down and Assassinate. Something a long the lines of -> BT, Throne, 3x Skullmaster, 3x6 Bloodcrushers, 3x Skull Cannons, 3x Flesh Hounds with some flex points at the end for a unit of Flamers or Seekers.

The only problem with it I found is screens, as there is very little to no shooting and holding power is quite low in the midboard if the enemy has a way to deal a lot of damage really fast. Definitely not bad! But very different match ups 😁

For me I have found it's all about rendmaster stacking. If you have 2-3 that allows triple flesh hounds for actions but they're killy as well. Bloodcrusher bricks don't stall out and fail and just glide through enemy armies. The greaters are great. But I had to cut down to 3 to stop the Bring it Down issues. I don't see value in screamers or Kairos or flamers etc etc. Have a GUO fight for mid and have something like hounds screen out home. Your natural expansion objective seems to be given walls to chill behind.

I do utilise the walls really well yea. I'm not a big fan of more than one rendmaster mainly because I don't own more than one! 😅 But also because I feel like they are a bit expensive for 150 points and mine almost always gets his buff off where I need it most and then just sits in a corner for the rest of the game. Damage 3 is plenty enough.

Love the chariot idea, I'm working on a chariot list to right now lol, also contains 8 Chariots. Decided to pass on the exalted tho, only battleshocks if it is the one to kill something, and you just killed one of the units that was within the 6 in. Decided to go 3 and 3 hellflayers and seeker.

I love hellflayers! They're awesome! Figured that forcing some battleshocks would be really crucial for some of your units. Like if you fight first with the exalted and it forces a shock test then you can use Draught of Terror for +1 ap and reroll wounds on the fiends too! Nuts.

I love skull cannons! They are really good! But I only own the one, and to be honest I think one is all you need. I keep mine very safe in back field and when all their deep strikes have come down and my home is safely stickied from plaguebearers at the beginning of the game I normally teleport the cannon into better firing lines and do actions with him 😁 For 95 points it's a great statline, but it has almost no damage. It's just useful for the shock test which is really clutch in some games.

I've only recently started playing, and currently working towards a tripple lord of change list, 2x6 screamers with fatemasters, 3 x 3 flamers for objective play 2x10 pinks to sit on objectives, and 2x3 nurglings for screens and a changeling. The downside is still 6 characters but none of the demons are 20 wounds and there are only 3 of them. So i hope I can kinda bait them to go for fixed and then go all in, since u can only score assasinate once per turn.

That's a nice list! 😁 Hopefully it does super well for you because sadly the Lord's don't have amazing output for their price at the moment. Just as a heads up though, if they do take fixed. They can score bring it down and assassinate at any time. The only cap is 20 each. If you throw all 3 lords into them they can have 12 for BIT and 12 for ASS in one turn no problems!

100% casually viable! I wouldn't go more than Rotigus and the GUO with enhancement! Those two are plenty and give up a lot of points for bring it down and assassinate already. Go chaff after that and have a great time 😁

OMG, this video is such a relief, I thought I was going crazy. I am playing a game against Tyranids today and they have six monsters that are all sub 200 points, some of them being sub 150, and I'm sitting here with profiles that are that not much better but are 100 points more each. So many mounted units with giant bases that get completely screwed by terrain, so many characters+monster options that you feel you have to run because nothing else has S10 or more that give Bring it Down for free. No real access to re-roll charges or advance and charge besides stratagems with very few ways to consistently generate command points compared to something like Marneus, Azrael or The Swarmlord. I fail a charge roll, that unit does 0% of the damage. I can't pivot into more shooting because it's either anti-chaff or anti-tank, there's no inbetween amd it's all overcosted. I don't really feel like I've misplayed but I always try to blame myself before I blame the faction for why I'm losing but it's just rough. It feels like our points are way too steep simply to prevent other factions abusing our units. Although I'm not sure, this is the same index that has an ability that gives Anti-Infantry 4+ in the charge phase... until the end of the phase. I think they just don't care. Here's hoping the codex fixes it but I'm not very confident in that, assuming we even get it in a timely manner before the edition ends in two years.

They might be doing daemons like they do in Sigmar where they split each of the gods into the csm books. Like Nurgle with death guard! That would destroy our army forever... So I really hope not 😅

@@Barnyard-Wargaming That rumour has been around since forever (6th edition?). While it cannot be ruled out and we know, a) that GW hates people using models in multiple systems without buying extra b) this might be the first edition were we have all god specific legions as codex and c) there is precedent in AoS, plus some legion roster seem rather bare boned, there are some oddities that make it a bit less likely imo. For example, shouldn't Be'Lakor be part of CSM already? God specific armybooks in AoS are internally autonomous, meaning, while they share some basic rules for that god, mortals and daemons are on equal ground in terms of list building. You can got full mortals, full daemons or mix and match. Blades of Khorne, Maggotkin of Nurgle (damn those names are dope) are lore-wise not actual factions that exist while WE, DG etc. clearly point to mortals. It Would be a bit odd playing pure Khorne daemons inside a legion dex. While GW could rename the codices or make daemons completely reliant on the corresponding legion, that would make a lot of people very unhappy and the daemon rosters seems way to big to be just "additional" units. I guess we'll know when the first 10th legion dex will hit.

I'd be interested to see if anybody has tried a chariot list. I currently own six chariots but I've never tried using them with terrain in movement if it's going to be too hard to move them around since they're so wide

I suppose it depends on the terrain you play on. The GW stuff is quite forgiving because a lot of it is less than 2" in height so you can move quite freely

I've been having fun with 3 bloodthirstys, scarbrand, 2x3 seekers, 3x10 nurglings and 30 blue horrors to start on no mans and performing actions, I've been swapping around taking some flesh hounds and sloppity, or flamers, screamers, changeling, whatever mid trash you like to hold back field and uppy downy as needed to backfill... Typically running fixed behind lines and engage on all fronts unless they are just giving me something up obviously. Another version I've tried is cutting 2 thirsters and adding 2 skullkrusher bricks

@@Barnyard-Wargaming if you go 4 Thirsty's they can't max either assassinate or bid, I'll try to keep 2 thirsters on the table til t4 slow drip style, when they kill one you ingress another in its place then whatever ya got left just dump it all out there for the final push, if the horror screen falls just go for the take home gambit and flood it with thirst (turn 1 keeping a lone thirster in the back behind ruins and he just sits there for a turn while you put opponent in seeker jail and crack off 3x terraform or your burn or whatever the primary is t1) then t2 you open up the blood taps a bit, by turn 4 with uppy downy and all your screen score the target saturtion costs my opponet the game usually have 2 thirsters+scar brand left bottom of 4)

​@@Barnyard-Wargaming 10 man flesh hound units are also very fast and killy if you go hard on rendies and low GDs (to not go too hard on ass/bid). 5 mans are great screeners, action monkeys etc though! Can kill some chaff without buff.

I'm not having too many issues winning, but I am having issues taking monster mash, or even half of monster mash. The points we give away is still ridiculous. I feel guilty for playing more than 2 greater daemons. But I suppose it is a way to force players into running a mix of units.

I second this! Though fateweaver is off by a little bit. Honestly Belakor is hot garbage right now and could easily come down 75 points minimum. 250 is a lot to pay for him when I can have Rotigus at 230. Beautiful model! But his rules are terrible!

I have been playing a few various lists, the one I like the most is just going 7 greater daemons, sure you give up assassinate and bring it down, but my finding is that not much can actually deal with 7 greater daemons with one of them being Kairos denying strats very early on.

I think that's very true for most players! But when you get to the top tables they will absolutely know exactly how much damage it takes to kill them to the wound, and screen the rest until later turns, then you have nothing to play the game while they just hold you in place and win on points.

Though, firstly I am not so certain they would, because what happens to Belakor? He just goes into the normal csm codex and you can ally him with other armies specifically? Seems weird to me, and someone else made a great point that when they made khorne daemon kin, in the past which was a book with world eaters and Khorne daemons, it did terribly! So please gw don't do it because people will boycott! 😅

I'm 3-0 right now in pariah nexus deamons. I'm running very close to what you're building with the khorne and nurgle core. I'm not taking any scoring units and instead running strictly fixed, granted my oppoments were imperial knights, black templar iron storm and montka tau which all brought lots of characters and vehicles. 96-34 against t'au whose list didn't give up assassinate but i was able to score big with engage on all fronts and bid. I'm running 2 plaguebearer units that with the auras from the guo and rotigus have been able to sticky objectives and sway the front line away from the khorne alpha/delta strikes.

@BigMan-cp4pi it could definitely be that I got lucky. We were playing rapid escalation so I started with skarbrand on the board. Popped advance and charge, t1 made charges with him and bloodletters that dropped in next to him.

Honestly the Mont'ka match up might be unwinnable for daemons if the Tau player really knows what he is doing. I played it live on stream the other day against Cooper! Who was the number one Tau player in OCE last year and it definitely felt unwinnable. Lethal hits are savage for Daemons to deal with because it bypasses their biggest defense, toughness.

@BigMan-cp4pi I can see a place for 2x3 fiends. They seem great at taking out cheap scoring units. That is if your opponent is playing tactical. I would absolutely run these against necrons and votann.

I have been having pretty good success with an almost mono Khorne list. GUO, Skarbrand and Bloodthirster. 3 units of bloodletters with skull taker and blood master and 1 rend master, 6 blood crushers and 2 units of 5 flesh hounds with some nurglings. Nurglings screen and move block, flesh hounds do missions and the 2 big reds move to mid board to provide deep strike for bloodletters and blood crushers if needed. Skarbrand and Bloodthirster are the LAST things in my army that engage, everything else clears screens and does the maximum damage possible. Some of my games 1 of the 2 big reds might not even see combat as their job is to buff and stay alive as long as possible. Bloodletter bomb with a hero and shrine buff will nuke anything in the game

You are totally right! Sorry I didn't specify in the video. I made my special, so they are not on the right base because I believe it looks better and the local TO's allow me to get away with it because they really should be on this size anyway. GW has just been too slow in updating it. The flying stands constantly break and fall over so I made my own on better bases 😁

Played with a close variation to your list from a few days back, sans skullcannon. Bloodletters overkilled a thing a died. Given the emphasis on durable units, what about: Rotigus GUO w/ gift GUO GUO Skarbrand Bloodthirster w/ Axe Epi w/ plagurbearers Nurglings Screamers Plague Drones. Thought is to use the extra GUO's for behind/new homers as fixed if possible. Not a super killy list but should survive to keep playing the mission. Hoping to pickup and redeploy monsters that get close to dying. Also, 6 monsters...super cool, right? My games will get done fast and will retain mental energy over a RTT/GT

I mean your games will be over super duper fast! But I think maybe just for you 😅 Everyone will just kill a GUO a turn for 10 points. Out oc you and voila you've lost. 20 wounds is just such a bad break point for monsters that are also characters!

@@Barnyard-Wargaming played that against Montka Tau with breacherfish, 2 ghost keel, 2 skyrays, etc. Bloodthirster died relatively early, and 2 GUO followed. Lost by 9pts. Issue on my side was not enough action monkey units for secondaries. Sadly, quad-chongus will be relegated to fun basement games. :(

I don't think so. I tested them a handful of times, and for 80 points they hardly blocked anything. They got overwatched a lot and hardly scored me any points... 😅

Nope. You're better off just taking fiends for 105. Screamers are 75. Even hounds at 70. Or 3 Nurglings to stop scout moves for 40. Better choices all round!

Heck no, we're right up there with the best 😜 Now, especially for players new to Daemons we can be a little tricky to get the hang of but once you learn all the strats / how to run them they're BRUTAL on the tabletop. Don't dismiss a good nurgle daemon prince sitting between Rotigus and GUO, providing -1 to hit, it makes a huge difference in many games and he's hard to take down

Nice!! Things like skull cannons, change casters, bloodcrushers, bilepipers etc! I did try it a few times but everyone kept passing their tests and I gave up a little bit! 😅

I've thought about running this, but what puts me off is that none of the battleshock forcing stuff can actually deny actions, or deny primary points (because you only need to not be battle-shocked when you start an action, and for primary, the battleshock wears off in their command phase before they scored primary). It's basically just to deal mortal wounds and deny stratagems, which isn't nothing, just feels a bit meh.

@@Barnyard-Wargaming I run a poxbringer and a blue horrors squad. They make them up to minus 3 leadership in the shadow, capping out at 9 leadership, now. The mortal wounds are awesome. I battle shocked a guy at the last tournament so many times that he still had 7 command points left at the end of the game because he couldn't use any stratagems.

I think you might be playing too aggressive with your big boys. Im currently playing comp demons for tournies and have found a list i really enjoy. But needs more testing

I am a very optimistic player that is very true! I go for big plays a lot more than others and often they don't pay off, but I am very very careful with where I place them, thinking about next turns before they come when I place them down, but it really feels like we cannot play the game without giving up max points!

@@Barnyard-Wargaming the way i play demons is very khorne heavy all-in. If all charges go off, you win, if not you lose. I think demons are fragile and need to hit like half the opponents army before they can retaliate and then they dont have enough guns… 4+ saves are very swingy

They are indeed the king of swing. But I've found that when you put all your eggs in the one basket with Khorne, if you fail some charge rolls you just lose. It's making a swingy army more swingy! So I like the Nurgle half 😁

my issue with AoW is they give really biased rankings based purely off what they actually own and have played with. they dont do much exploration with list building and tend to only offer advice / focus on the most "meta" units/armies.

That's very fair. Though I don't think its entirely fair for me to fire back at them about any other list other than daemons. As a faction specialist I know a lot about daemons but not much of anything else, and they play a lot of armies. So they're probably just doing the best job they can.
