YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED .... DAFT Visa...The good news, the bad news and WHAT A NIGHTMARE!! This past year there was a change in the DAFT fees (good news). There were some "bumps" we hit in the first few months. Now there is a complete nightmare going on with housing (the ugly). Moving from the US to the Netherlands under the DAFT visa can be a daunting task...but if you stick to the steps, ask questions, and push forward your going to be just fine! I can tell you this moving to the Netherlands from the US and the cost of moving to Europe, by far was the best thing we ever did.

My husband and I came here in 2017 using DAFT. My husband began a bike repair business in Utrecht. All of his customers have been Dutch people. We had sold our house in the USA and used that money to buy a house here, We have no mortgage. We were just approved for permanent residency. Phew!!! We used Adam & Wolf, immigration lawyers in Amsterdam. We highly recommend them.

@SoulToSoulTravels, AFAIK, you do not need to show a profit. It’s nowhere written in the treaty, and it is not a requirement. Although IND sometimes will try to use it as a requirement, they can’t legally do so. Some IND workers are a bit over-zealous/difficult. Just make sure that the bank account with the required €4500 never, and I mean never ever, dips below that amount. If it does, even if you add funds to bring it back up to that amount, your renewal will be denied!

Having a Green Card or US citizenship is not very beneficial if you make your income outside the US. If you make more money than the exclusion amount, which differs yearly (roughly $90k - $100k), you will have to pay taxes in the US. In any case, you will have to report your income every year to the IRS (US tax service), regardless of whether you meet the exclusion amount or not. On top of that, if you are married to a non-US citizen, that person’s income has to be included in the filing.

I'm fully aware about the one-way process. My friend and I are working on it, but just the application fee for the initial visa is $700. Then there's an additional fee for doing the interview at the US consulate in Amsterdam which I think is another $400 and it all has to be paid up front with no guarantees. To be totally honest, I'm already thankfull that I managed to get through the whole process of getting Global Entry which definitely makes it easier for me to enter the US 🙂 I used it last June and was through immigration in less than 5 minutes at Atlanta airport 🙂 Having done the numbers and taking everything into account, we're looking at close to around $10,000 for me to get a green card and being able to stay in the US permanently. The only 'good' thing is that I'll be able to keep my Dutch disability payments while living in the US.

Thanks so much! I’m headed to the Netherlands in July and was curious if Rotterdam is a good place for a late 30s single person. It would be nice to make some friends who are like minded. I’m in to health, Meditations, dance, yoga, etc. Although I’m not a big drinker. Any recommendations? I’ve been looking at Amsterdam, of course, as well as Rotterdam and The Hague. I do love the Dutch charm and canals. My business with be health and wellness if that helps. Thanks for all your hard work! You guys are awesome to watch!

Amsterdam/Rotterdam/Den Haag will be all good for basically everything since they are the big cities so there will always be the things and people you are looking for but keep in mind as Eric and Tammy stated housing is a big issue. Don't expect to end up in the centre since those rents are nearly impossible to pay if you are not some sort of big earning manager. But then again our public transport is top notch so you will get to the centre in 15/20 minutes easily. Btw both Rotterdam/Den Haag don't have a lot of canals, there is plenty of water though. Some tips for maybe expanding your search, these are some of the smaller cities, but still cities and fairly close to the big ones and they do have canals: Utrecht (4th city of NL I'd say the closest to being a smaller version of Amsterdam, situated in the centre of NL inbetween Amsterdam/Rotterdam, both are within a 30 min travel by train from Utrecht) Haarlem (top 20 city in NL, got that old Dutch city feeling, not a lot of canals but imo a similar to Amsterdam vibe without the tourists, close to Amsterdam and close to the beach) Alkmaar (situated a bit above Amsterdam, 30 minute travel by train) Leiden (situated between Amsterdam/Rotterdam, 20 minute travel by train, old city but also a student city) Dordrecht (close to Rotterdam, old city feeling. I don't know too much since I'm from Amsterdam and haven't been a whole lot in that area) These are all cities that are more affordable then the 3 big ones, though I think Den Haag is somewhat affordable compared to Amsterdam/Rotterdam. There is a couple of US people living in NL living in these cities: @DutchAmericano = Utrecht / @buncharted = started in Rotterdam, moved to Dordrecht / @TAndTGoDutch = Leiden. Might want to check out their channels to get some more info on their experiences in NL and all. Good luck!

In the UK they increased the guaranteed yearly income from about 26,000 to around 38,000 pounds just a couple of days ago. The rest of N. Europe will surely follow. Also Mr. Wilders will have some interesting ideas. He can't be ignored anymore. Your (now) 4,500 euro bank deposit will not take you far, it will go up and it doesn't count as income. Now, start making 40,000 plus euros a year and learn Dutch. Remember, the more south you go, the language problem becomes worse. Scandinavia? Forget it.

Have you asked? There can be judicial, financial, political and socioeconomic reasons, but I simply think, that after the interview and their investigation, they simply didn’t trust you to return to Togo and not dissapear in the further Schengen area. You understand, that a visum for the Netherlands is a visum for almost the entire EU, so they have to be strict.

As a Dutch citizen I tried to get a residence and work permit for the USA, it was nigh on impossible. And yes, extremely expensive. Tens of thousands of dollars of fees, and a requirement to bring with you about half a million dollars in money if I remember correctly (it's been a few year). And the number of permits per year is extremely limited, so much so that the entire pool tends to get exhausted within minutes of the entries opening for the year.

if you have a lot of money it is very easy to buy a home. That being said, if you want to buy a home in the popular cities it is really hard and you should be willing to pay more than the house is worth. If you are looking to buy a home in a smaller town away from the popular cities, it isn't that hard.

I am a realtor in the states, but I could be a content creator or take photography for real estate companies. Housing is rough but a houseboat could be a way to go im hoping?

Hey Eric and Tammy i just recently got invested in american politics, and i remember Eric voicing his opinion somewhat, some time ago. Yes it's a serious and sad state of bussiness at the moment, but gurrll i'm getting fat on all the popcorn i'm eating while watching congress hearings. And it's not that i'm discounting the conservative or republican side...if they had something decent to say that is, but i'm living for it. Hope i don't offend both of you by this off topic comment but i just wanted share some thoughts about where you both come from. I would be as you would expect of a dutch person more inclined to the democratic side, and i'm glad to see them well represented by voices like Raskin, Porter and Crockket

@@SoultoSoulTravels Good morning Eric hope your enjoying your coffee. And yes it's a show allright, one i'd rather or would hope the first-world nations would move past. But i guess the world is suffering from global social regression. Trying to tie into the topic i've pirated, I would say that humanity as a society has the means to spread out and pick the location where you think you'd operate best, or the environment you'd think thrive. We've got all this technology to make this happen, it's just who uses the tech that prohibits social evolution. Hasn't anybody told those buttonpushers that when they die, they'll have to leave all wordly possessions behind? Huh they should all suffer the of Eckhart Tolle (talk about dry reading)...okay i'll drop it now...have a good day both of you, cheers
