As an Arsenal fan in the 1990s, I idolised Bergkamp. He was so, so good. Also, Henry didn't replace Bergkamp, Henry replaced Anelka, Wright and Suker. Bergkamp was the glue of that Arsenal forward line until he retired.

I remember that nobody could understand and articulate what actually happened. Lee Dixon later mentioned that he was there, had a clear sight and couldn’t understand what happened either. There was no KZbin back then, so you ve seen a replay and that was it, took years after to look at it again and again to figure out what the fuck he did. And hundreds of people sharing same memories in comments.

Bergkamp is my favourite Premier League player of all time and I'm a Man United fan! It was an honour to have this ludicrously talented player in the Premier League, regardless of who he played for. I always remember what Ian Wright said about him... "I never saw him have a bad touch, even in training". Players this good only come around once every 30 years. I read somewhere that while Bergkamp was at Arsenal, he was responsible for assisting or scoring 40% of their goals. You want to talk about a guy born to play football? He was the epitome. The guy was a damn genius. Look up his goal for Netherlands against Argentina in the World Cup 1998.

I grew up with the Ajax teams of the late 80's and later the90's. Such a joy to watch, eventhough i'm a FC Twente fan, those Ajax teams produced some great football and talents. And then there was Bergkamp. Became my idol from the moment I first saw him play. Profilic, pacey goalscorer. I remember my uncle getting a paid Dutch channel to be able to watch Arsenal when he moved there. I've watched almost all of the Arsenal matches whem Bergkamp was there. Out of this world football, with the invincible season as icing on the cake. Too bad he never won a Champions League and f*ck we deserved to win that '98 WC. Scored one of the best goals ever there. The one against Newcastle was just ridiculous. Probably the best and most impossible goal to score. DB10, thank you for the joy you gave us. Undoubtetely the best up there with Cruijff.

I am sorry, but didn't he leave Ajax in the summer of 1992? Or was it 1993 maybe? Because he was at Ajax when they won the UEFA Cup in 1991/92 season. And I am 100% sure he was at Inter Milan during 1993/1994 season, cause I remember Jonk scoring in the UEFA Cup Final against Salzburg, and Jonk came with Bergkamp. Btw, it was nothing like Salzburg today. That was a real Cinderella story that Salzburg run. They beat Antwerpen, Sporting Lisbon, Eintracht (first time in history Austrian club knocked out German club from the competition), Karlsruhe, and lost to Inter in the Final.

Bergkamp has been described by Jan Mulder as having "the finest technique" of any Dutch international and as a "dream for a striker" by former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry. He may have been Dutch, but Bergkamp’s biggest impact was arguably made on English football. Arriving to the Premier League as one of its first wave of foreign imports back in the unreconstructed early 1990s, Bergkamp immediately demonstrated a suaveness and detached innovation that was alien to the culture he’d come into. Without a shadow of a doubt the best player Arsenal ever witnessed to play in the famous red and white
@johnming73

Jan Mulder also said: with Bergkamp you win matches, with vBasten you win wars. It is sad that vBasten is so forgotten. He was so elegant. He was compared with Nurujev, the top ballet dancer. With vBAsten you had the combination of elegancy and killer mentality.

Dennis Bergkamp, Nwankwo Kanu, Dimitar Berbatov. These players were so graceful and elegant on the ball. They weren't particularly fast or strong, but they had a way of gliding across the field with the ball glued to their feet. And they didn't like to score straightforward goals, lol

It is so interesting that after his remarkable debut, he was struggling a lot in his first two years at Ajax. The media and public were critical, judging him as a elegant, but also fairly limited player , relying too much on one move (he did cut inside often, probably because he did not like being on the right wing ;)) Then he started scoring very regularly while coming on as a substitute, almost a goal per game. His scoring style then rather efficiënt at that time, relying on his incredible first touch, and precise aim. It was only in his third year at Ajax that it became that he was a truly unique player with magical ball control. And the rest is history as they say ;) But it is also a cautionary tale that it can be difficult to judge the talent of a young player, and that we need to give them time and space to develop.

Bergkamp is one of my favourite ever footballers and always has been. His brilliance shone most at France 98 when he destroyed Argentina with his gorgeous assist to Kluivert, and then his incredible 3 touch goal to seal the victory. Bergkamp was world class and even the Brazilian team of those days would have been improved by having him in their squad. He was the only reason Arsenal did so well in those days. Long story short: Forget what was what on paper. On the pitch and in reality, the man occupied similar spaces to Zidane and did similar things. Except he has about double the amount of goals AND more assists. Despite being so highly rated, he is still underrated. If not for his fear of flying and the world not seeing him in Europe as much as they should have, he would have been rated as high as Zidane if not more so. Sublime player. A surgeon on the pitch. Cuz man’s first touch was insane… I wouldn’t dribble the ball if I had the nose for the ball like that. Everyone references the Pires pass, but it was such a fast sequence, but so much was going on. To flick the fast pass into a spin out to recover, takes a bunch of luck but logic to know where the ball will end up. If the defender had the foresight to just turn, he would’ve made a recovery. But damn if Bergkamp ain’t the essence of beautiful football 🤔❤️🥹

I'll never forget the winning goal against Argentina, in France 98. It was outrageous. Another attribute he had was his nasty streak (Van Persie had it, too). He's football. His kind make the game more beautiful. My favourite players are Bergkamp, Xavi and Hazard. Messi's way beyond my comprehension & cognition.

That goal against Newcastle, in my childhood when i saw that magic first time ( i saw it very late after he scored that goal, in the school on the internet in that time) and i was persist in my football "career" to recreate it. Even when we was playing on the asphalt and in the school etc. Everywhere. But i didnt have success unfortunately :( ... He was just pure magic, DB !

As titi once said "With Dennis, I don't need to worry where I'm standing. I know he will see me, I can be anywhere on the pitch and he will be able to pass the ball to me."

the first ever soccer pc game i played as a child not knowing much about soccer and its players bergkamp in this game stood out and was the first player i got to know. you can pass him the ball any where in the field. doesn't matter which direction he is facing or where he is standing, even in the middle of the field; you press shoot and the ball will magically curve into the net. you never miss. 😂😂 that was my first introduction to soccer and soccer players as a kid. Bergkamp. i still remember to this day. and him taking free kicks, easy goals...

What a player. Still my favourite player of all time. You can enoy his goala, his assists. I could happily sit for an hour and watch that first touch. The most elegant footballer of my lifetime.

Best player ive ever seen. The hat trick against Leicester (i think) was something else - 3 goal of the season contenders in one game. What a boy!!

Dennis was so, so good. His first touch was totally out of this world, and he did not need to put much effort to destroy defenses in the Premier League, not just with his goalscoring feats but also with his ability to create excellent chances for his teammates.

Wenger had eyes like a hawk back then. He could see a world class player a miles+ away. He found Bergkamp from nowhere. Fostered him into unbelievable status and then let him loose into the futbolding world. What a treat

1. Wenger didn't sign Bergkamp. 2. Bergkamp had top 3 finishes (2nd & 3rd) in the Ballon d'Or prior to arriving at Arsenal. He left Ajax as the most sought after footballer on the planet.

Bergkamp......genius does not describe him. Too many players called genius....when you have to name some of the greatest players of the modern game and if you have seen him play....Bergkamp will be on that list.

My 1st and still my ultra favorite player. I started playing at 16 since it wasn't offered where I'm from. I worked on 1st touch endlessly...couldn't get young players the past 20 yrs to take developing a soft 1st touch serious enough to be able catch keeper kicks over your shoulder.
