The shot clock in the NBA; or play clock, intentional downing in the NFL. If the change was to chill his awesomeness the rule would have been something like goalie cannot leave the box or kick the ball past the half line or the ball must be touch by two other players before a goal or team in possession only has X seconds to get the ball out of their half.

Oliver Kahn did it once too (atleast in the Bundesliga i think), where he touched the ball with his hands after a corner in the enemy half (his reason was: "Since he was a goalkeeper, he could use his hands in the box, doesn't matter which one.") Another german "legend" who forced a rule change was Walter Frosch (a player from germanys 2nd Division), which had once 18/19 yellow cards in one season (since it hadn’t a limit at 70/80s). After that season a rule was written that after the 4th (nowadays after the 5th) yellow card, a players will miss the next game.

René Higuita was a pioneer when it came to his skill with the ball at his feet and in his willingness to take responsibility for situations 40 metres from goal. Before the change in the back pass rule obliged keepers to develop these abilities, he was already showing that a team is made up of 11 footballers, not of 10 players and a goalkeeper. This had important tactical ramifications, helping forge the style of the Colombia team of the late '80s and early '90s. If Lev Yashín was recognized for his ability to anticipate and cut plays, René Higuita takes that ability to the extreme. He also adds control, ball driving and field vision, he looks like a libero. Higuita was not a clown, he was a professional and he knew what he was doing.

Around the same time Johan Cruyff as coach wanted to implement the tactic of putting a field player at the GK position, and play with 11 players as he thought that if you had full ball domination a GK was unnecessary. Directly or indirect Higuita proved that Cruyff idea was unrealistic because as soon as you would suffer ball loss the other team would be able to score from far distances with long distance shots.

When i told him the loss vs Cameroon made me cry endlessly as a kid, he told me it was one of the biggest regrets in his life and only imagined how that WC could’ve been for Colombia had that error not occurred. His wife Magnolia at one point chimed in and mentioned how he was tortured while imprisoned and he told me the gov’t locked him up because he wouldn’t give up Pablo’s location which he was unaware of and felt that the gov’t could’ve treated him with more dignity as this caused him to not be in form for WC ‘94. He signed and gifted me an Atletico Nacional polo and some sweaters i bought at his store and was really a genuine person, Don René is a class act and certainly deserves to be remembered as GK pioneer while also serving as an example on certain things to avoid as a pro footballer ❤🇨🇴
