Shocking moment sea lion charges at beachgoers in San Diego

California beachgoers were left screaming and crying after a protective sea lion charged at them.
Lauren Bertrand was visiting La Jolla Cove in San Diego on June 23 when she captured the footage of the angry sea lion. Prior to its attack on beachgoers, the marine mammal was swimming around the area with its babies, whom Bertrand also caught a glimpse of. The sea lion nearly came face to face with one swimmer before it swam away, leaving the humans unhurt. #sealions #LaurenBertrand #sandiego

Well, as I type this, having visited "La Jolla" the other day (still here in San Diego), the people were getting to close to the pups (left side of the bay), and some try petting, touching, taking selfies, etc., of these cubs. A big no no. This is their turf. Breeding ground, with cranes, pelicans, taking up other portions of the reefs. Glad we got to be close up (inches) from moms, cubs and big alpha before it closing. Of interest, one of the moms (or boys) was injured (July 1st), by either a boat/shark, so daddy alpha, (biggest sea lion, protecting his turf), was already agitated to beging with. And if "big alpha" is giving you cues (as he did all day Monday), don't be stupid. He can see you much better than you think. He's already "stressed" out, trying to touch the pups is = threat as far as he's concerned. Be safe out there. ✨😎

California has around 840 miles of coastline. The seals used to have a very small section of beach at LaJolla. They could rest there with their young and they felt safe. They were run off by people who didn’t think they should be allowed any part of the coast. It’s the humans fault. They should have left the seals alone and let them have their minuscule share of the coastline. I don’t feel a bit sorry for the humans.

The cove was built for children to have a safe place to swim. Commie Californians took that away.

That’s because it has always been “The Children’s Pool”. Not for wildlife. There is “around 840 miles” AND MORE, where wildlife can “feel safe”, away from humans. And yes, they are SEA LIONS, not seals.

If this is the cove in La Jolla it’s become a sea lion beach. It used to be quiet place where toddlers could paddle in the water (human toddlers). Perhaps this is a different place in San Diego but it does look like the cove.

Yup. The Cove with Sunny Jim's Cave right down the street. Was there on Monday. Daddy "alpha" was all stressed out, baby cubs right side of cove, injured mom on rock, while dumb dumbs tried to take selfies with these cubs all the while, daddy alpha warning them and stressed out. Well, .. what did they expect. .. ✨💫

Being so close to these animals is not only unsafe for both animals and humans, but illegal under the marine mammal protection act. Sad that no one enforces this. Just give the guy some damn space, ffs.

This is children's cove this is where we used to bring children during the 70s and 80s. Cuz the waves are small. This is not seal cove. Get rid of the seals

Easy idea : attach underwater recordings of Orcas to a few permanent buoys in the area. Play them sporadically & the sea lions will take off pronto. Give it a couple years for the waves to decontaminate the beach. Even better, instead of buoys have recordings mounted inside manufactured rocks. Sea lions don’t like orcas.
