Hearing about the origins of Stoicism would be cool. What philiosophies infleunced Stoicism?

Also, just an idea but doing classes on Stoicism would be cool and a good business idea for you, Ryan. I just bought Obstacle/Way and Im a huge fan.

*How* *would* *a* *Stoic* *view* *modern* *school?* More specifically, how would a Stoic (or _the_ Stoics) view the American education system. Like, how would a middle/high school student apply Stoicism to school and the many aspects of it: grades, forgetting to turn in an assignment on time, being an outlier, having a bad relationship with a teacher or classmate, etc.? And most importantly, whether a Stoic - or rather, again, _the_ Stoics (particularly Seneca) - would see school as a good use of their time.

Thanks Ryan for enriching my learning. I started learning Stoicism through your channel in July 2021, and the philosophy has started improving the way I view the world. I have been a Stoic most of my adult life but did not know about the philosophy. Thank you for being a great teacher, mentor and leader. Keep changing the world. I will do the same. Henry L

I currently don't have any questions, ryan. but I wanted to say that having the Ask Daily Stoic series is a good idea. I have begun learning about and practicing stoicism because of your work. I would have liked to have discovered stoicism at 19 myself, as opposed to my 40's, but it somehow managed to pass me by back then, even though I was into philosophy, psychology, observation & reflection on deeper meaning at 19. but if I apply Jungian synchronicity, I guess my finding stoicism now is because it will now be relevant and meaningful for me to practice stoicism in my life. (and I would have to agree that this idea is very true).

Actually, I had an epiphany this morning: I was walking to the shops; and all within a split second, while feeling wind and heavy rain on my face, walking slowly, I never felt happier, like I'd realised deep down what Marcus Aurelius said about our lives being minuscule, and death potentially close at hand at any moment, and suddenly all my fear about things struck me as pathetic - all fears are really just the brain's way of keeping you safe, but also not allowing you to grow and flourish.

You forgot to mention Massimo Pigliucci who is the author of "Live like a stoic" and "How to be a stoic". He is also an open atheist and can definitely guide non believers into Stoicism. But yeah like Ryan said the philosophy of Stoicism is very flexible and can therefore be practiced within a theist as well as a non theist thinking, just cherry pick what you like and throw out the rest. "I shall never be ashamed of citing a bad author if the line is good" Seneca, the father of cherry picking.

This is a rather personal question. I started following stoicism and as a result I got closer to my God (I'm Christian) because it just made sense to me. My question is, how can you practice Amor Fati, and at the same time striving for a change on the things you cannot control? Example, how can I practice Amor Fati, but at the same time not giving up on faith that what you're asking God will manifest?

God helps those who helps themselves. Christianity and Stoicism both teach to take action. Not to be passive and not sit back waiting for things to happen.

Solution to the room mate issue. Pick up all the stuff and put on the room mate's bed. When the room mate gets angry, simply say that you wanted to use the living room and you didn't know what your room mate wanted you to do with the stuff. Act as if it was a real quandary that did not have an obvious solution. This shifts the focus on the equitable use of the room, rather than the lack of consideration of the room mate. Judgement seems to beget more bad behavior.

Hey Ryan and Team :) I am always super excited when a new ask daily stoic episode comes out and I like them a lot. However I have to tell you that I find it a little too much to promote 2 third party companies or sponsors in one video AND go on to basically promote in disguise the daily stoic book. I am all for you guys making money but remember jab jab jab, right hook. Not jab, right hook, jab, right hook, jab. ;) Thanks for your great content ;)

How about Stoicism and Islam? I'm a Muslim myself but I somehow follow stoic philosophy along side practicing Islam. I think, as long as they both take you where you want in life(a good life) then there won't be any problem.

I think we need to differentiate between what the Stoics believed and the spirituality that Stoicism teaches. The early Stoics were Greek and Roman pagans and had their pantheons and did mention their gods in their writings. But Stoicism itself does not teach the gods, it teaches the Universal Reason or the Logos. The Stoic is to conform his life to this Logos, not to the gods. "All that you see - that which comprises both god and man - is one; we are parts of one great body." - Seneca

What is it really like to be in harmony in nature? I mean it's really hard to get it what does that actually mean. Here is an extract from Encheiridion "Therefore, when you are in harmony with nature in the use of external impressions, then be elated; for then it will be some good of your own at which you will be elated." What is it this nature? What is it to be in harmony with nature? What nature is this? Also, I want a general answer not in regards to this extract specifically.
