Ryan Holiday defines 50 rules for life from the Stoics, gathered from their immense body of work across two thousand years. These rules functioned, then, as now, as guides to what the ancients called “the good life.” Hopefully some of them will illuminate your own path.
00:00 intro
01:03 Focus on what you can control.
01:24 You control how you respond to things.
01:59 Ask yourself, “Is this essential?”
02:28 Meditate on your mortality every day.
02:47 Value time more than money/possessions.
03:11 You are the product of your habits.
03:28 Remember you have the power to have no opinion.
03:58 Own the morning.
04:28 Put yourself up for review (Interrogate yourself).
04:46 Don’t suffer imagined troubles.
05:18 Try to see the good in people.
05:41 Never be overheard complaining…even to yourself.
06:02 Two ears, one mouth…for a reason (Zeno)
06:12 There is always something you can do.
06:33 Don’t compare yourself to others.
07:06 Live as if you’ve died and come back (every minute is bonus time).
07:25 “The best revenge is not to be like that.” Marcus Aurelius
07:48 Be strict with yourself and tolerant with others.
08:09 Put every impression, emotion, to the test before acting on it.
08:41 Learn something from everyone.
09:12 Focus on process, not outcomes.
09:41 Define what success means to you.
10:14 Find a way to love everything that happens (Amor fati).
10:46 Seek out challenges.
11:11 Don’t follow the mob.
12:00 Grab the “smooth handle.”
12:34 Every person is an opportunity for kindness (Seneca)
12:57 Say no (a lot).
13:33 Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
14:15 Find one thing that makes you wiser every day.
14:54 What’s bad for the hive is bad for the bee (Marcus Aurelius)
15:24 Don’t judge other people.
15:53 Study the lives of the greats.
16:30 Forgive, forgive, forgive.
17:01 Make a little progress each day.
17:26 Journal.
18:34 Prepare for life’s inevitable setbacks (premeditatio malorum)
19:08 Look for the poetry in ordinary things.
19:46 To do wrong to one, is to do wrong to yourself. (sympatheia)
20:07 Always choose “Alive Time.”
20:38 Associate only with people that make you better.
21:04 If someone offends you, realize you are complicit in taking offense.
21:36 Fate behaves as she pleases…do not forget this.
21:50 Possessions are yours only in trust.
22:31 Don’t make your problems worse by bemoaning them.
23:03 Accept success without arrogance, handle failure with indifference.
23:50 Courage. Temperance. Justice. Wisdom. (Always).
24:21 The obstacle is the way.
24:47 Ego is the enemy.
25:09 Stillness is the key.

My nephew turned me onto your email, and KZbin shows. I’m 71 in the throws of mourning my husband of 47 years and you have given me more to know in this life I have lived so far. I thank you for that. We have had a beautiful marriage of which I’m beyond grateful and I have many blessings in my grandchild my family and the people around me. I’m glad to add you as one of those blessings to make even more of this life that I have no regrets of. I’m sad and missing but I also know what I had and what I have and all to give. Thank you

"Look for the poetry in ordinary things." Back in college I took a poetry writing course. I remember my professor stressing the idea that if you're going for a walk or a jog that you shouldn't wear headphones because you miss out on the beauty of so many things. Your surroundings and even the rhythm of your own heartbeat are beautiful things that can inspire many great lines. I've never forgot this and even though I don't write poetry anymore, I still think like a poet. However, I wouldn't recommend not wearing headphones in a gym because they're usually blaring some garbage.

I recently started this practice a few months ago, and it's been a revelation. Ditching the headphones has made me more attuned to the nuances and beauty in everyday moments, in everyday life. It's also made me more mindful and intentional about when I do listen to music. Everyday life doesn't need a soundtrack; it already has its own if you are open to experiencing it.

It is almost 6 month of war here in Ukraine. And my native city is right on the front line. All these missile strikes, artillery , etc. ruining places that were part of my life and killing people I knew made me to revise some thoughts on life priorities. Extreme situations like this kind of underline what is really important in your life. A food and water enough to be healthy and sometimes something tasty just for pleasure of tasting a good dish. Clean and warm bed to sleep. Possibility of having a walk in the park and watching birds, squirrels , etc. People you care are in safety and are healthy. An opportunity to work on things you want to master. This is actually it. Its actually what is enough. Situation brought me to something on the edge of stoicism and Nietzschean overcoming of yourself. And while googling on stoicism I came across with your channel. Just want to say - thank you. You are doing a great job sharing thoughts and spreading an ideas to people that need them!

It’s with all this stoicism trend nowadays that I’ve discovered that I’ve been a stoic all my life without even knowing it! Interestingly, sometimes I felt that I had an “uncommon” approach to the situations which didn’t match the usual behavior of many people, and that made me think that maybe I was wrong about my way of thinking. But it just happened that I was a stoic 😄 good that now I can name it and be proud of it!

I have now gone back to the beginning of the video and watching at normal speed and now going to watch again and pause, meditate and journal on each point before moving on to the next point. Reading your comment made me realise how I was trying to 'smash out' this video and move quickly through things in a hurried pace. The reason I love Marcus Aurelius so much is because I faced so many of the troubles he provides solutions too. I would get like halfway to his solution on my own, then negative thoughts would push out the wisdom before I’d have that “aha” moment. Hearing that someone from 2,000 years ago was facing essentially the exact same problems made me realize that my problems are not unique or so complex that I as a human don’t possess the skills to make my life better in the face of these problems. Was kind of like holding a mirror up to myself, but my reflection became a friend instead of a bully.

OMG - I’m enjoying this so much… I’m in my mid seventies now. I studied Eastern wisdom traditions most of my life: Buddhism, Zen, and Taoism, but I knew nothing at all about the Stoics. Over my 70+ years I had developed some personal ideas and outlooks that helped me along the way. Then… over the past few months because of these vids on KZbin I have been introduced to the Stoics way of viewing life and I am stunned at how many of these ideas I had developed on my own without realizing there was a name for it or that there were ancient wisdom traditions based on that way of seeing things. So: THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this with the world here on YT. Now I want to read some of these wise words in book form to grok the back-story. Ever grateful.

Hi Ryan thank you so very much for these videos. You are inspiring me to be 1% better every day. Making healthier choices, sticking to a good fitness routine. And even doing one thing today to scare me by having a cold shower this morning after my high intensity training workout I had always feared cold water and I found myself looking up at the shower head and asking it" is this all you've got?" Next aims are to go to bed 15 minutes earlier at the start of each week and waking up 15 minutes earlier. Improving by 15 minutes every week. So I can get up and start journalling. 😊😊

A few years back I went through a very painful divorce and your book helped me out of my depression. I would listen to it as I was running training for a marathon... almost 5 years later I realize how that painful journey was the way to this current new stage of my life... it turns out my exwife was a few years later diagnosed with freak Early Onset Dementia... what I did not realize at the time is the weigh of that disease was not only bringing her down, but bringing our young sons and myself down with it... it was through the painful divorce that I freed myself from it, and was able to be the father my sons needed... now my sons and I are doing very well, and we are also caring for my exwife and being present for her accompanying her though her journey, but not being drowned by it... the painful divorce was the way for all of us to become greater and have a better life (for now -lol)

@@johnbags2525 in keeping with the tradition of “The Obstacle Is The Way” Your negative post gave me the opportunity to paste a message I wrote to my ex-wife because today would have been our 29th wedding anniversary: . A note to my ex-wife In the day of our anniversary. It has been - [ ] 29 years since we got married and I promised to take care of you until death do us apart. - [ ] 31 years since you stole my heart with your sweet kiss when we first met - [ ] 7 years since we divorced. - [ ] 4 years since you were diagnosed with Early Onset Dementia and I took you back to care for you. My heart is broken in 1000 pieces and dark. Yet, somehow I managed to learn to love better than I had ever loved before. Your sweetness is incomparable. Your pureness is indescribable. I am still in awe! Yet, I suffer immeasurable grief for seeing you go through the Alzheimer’s experience. My pain is matched with deep gratitude for having the opportunity to serve you selflessly, and to take care of our two beautiful and strong sons. I will always love you selflessly and eternally, because you deserve it. I see the pure sweetness of God displayed in you every second of every day. Thank you for making me better and for giving me the opportunity to care for you.
